Discovering The Passion To Do What You Love … This is the topic I selected for my upcoming presentation at the annual C.W. Post Honors Conference, a oneday schedule of seminars and panels, lectures and performances, all centered around a common theme, this year’s being Creative Engagement. When initially approached about the prospect of being a part of this Conference, one I had attended each year of my own tenure at C.W. Post, my first reaction was the usual mix of anxiety and sheer terror that comes when any form of public speaking is broached. And this, for an entire hour, in front of the best and the brightest my alma mater has to offer? I could feel the panic setting in, and the event was still months away.
Now, only one week remains ‘til the big day – and I’m still wrestling with what, exactly, I have to offer this group of impressionable young minds, all at the point in their lives where they are desperately trying to do exactly what my title suggests – discover that passion which will drive them into a particular field, hopefully to stay, for a long and fulfilling career. I guess a good starting point would be the initial inspiration for my topic, a letter I received from a local reader many months ago, in response to a column I had recently published, stating: “I wanted to let you know that indeed your words were read and inspired someone… as a humble writer myself, I know that is all we really want after all.” Creative Engagement at its best, no? Just the knowledge that my words had reached someone is some of the most positive feedback one can receive.
This is not to say that we all need constant pats on the back in order to feel valued and successful (although some certainly do). It simply reaffirms the notion that what we do for a living should be more than a job; it should reach far beyond the scope of merely being a means to an end, a way to pay the bills, etc. Above all else, it should engage YOU. If others find a similar connection through you, so much the better, an added bonus. I still don’t know exactly what I will say once I step to the head of the classroom a little over a week from now. But I suppose a good starting point is simply speaking openly and honestly and attempting to make a connection. And if I can reach even one person and help them discover his/her own passion in life, I will consider it a success.

The Mentoring Partnership of Long Island (MPLI), the leading organization for providing quality mentoring opportunities for Long Island’s youth, held its 10th Annual Mentoring Matters Conference, presented by AT&T, on March 13th-14th at the LIU Post campus in Brookville. MPLI partner, and Mentoring Matters Conference Title Sponsor, AT&T, kicked off the twoday conference with a $20,000 check presented to MPLI, along with key elected officials, and LIU Post representatives in support of youth mentoring programs. The Mentoring Matters Conference two-day conference brought together participants and advocates from Long Island’s youth mentoring community, who participated in educational sessions and workshops designed to further their involvement in mentoring programs. New York Sings was launched in February as part of the New York Lottery’s current “Mission for Education” campaign, which serves to remind the
public that the Lottery’s sole core function is to give back to New York State education through aid to local school districts. Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.
The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad
cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the
risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to
be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important
for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

All Kids Fair The 4th Annual All Kids Fair takes place on Sunday, April 27th, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Melville Marriott - Long Island. Both this protein and the Ras protein play major roles in cell signaling in mammals, and mutations in Ras are one of the most common mutations found in human cancer cells. “The material is directly connected to the AP Biology curriculum, which deals with protein structure and function, cell signaling, and cancer,” explained Knuffke. The advanced tools that the Deer Park team used for the project also reflect the current rigorous state of the curriculum. “Seeing students using tools that were not available even 10 years ago is an amazing

In a continued quest for excellence in science research, a team of ambitious Deer Park High School students – David Golann, Ian Murray, Nicole-Ann Pagan and John Pawelko – competed in the recent Protein Modeling Challenge at Stony Brook University, placing 13th out of 30 teams. During the competition, hosted by Stony Brook’s Center for Science and Mathematics Education, the four young scientists displayed a model of a Ras protein that they had spent two months creating prior to the event. The team prepared by meeting once a week to learn how to build the model using 3D modeling software. The students were also required to write an essay about the protein and what they represented in their model. “I’m super proud of how the team did at this year’s competition,” said Deer
