The award recognizes consistently superior teaching at the graduate, undergraduate, or professional level. Suffolk’s Kelliann Schrage Flores, assistant professor of Foreign Language, Humanities and Women Studies and Krystyna Janicka-Wlodek, assistant professor of Mathematics were among 48 award recipients from 30 colleges and universities state-wide it was announced by SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher. “The Chancellor’s Award confirms what we have known all along,” said Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay. “This recognition is a systemwide acknowledgment

Villanova offers and the way most students choose to utilize those opportunities. For any student, the journey for a wholesome college experience starts with academics. After all, that is the reason people go to college. It makes sense to take advantage of the many benefits Villanova - or any college - can provide. Additionally, joining clubs or athletic teams can also enrich a college experience. I’m in the Business Leadership Society, among other clubs. This society is a hybrid. It’s a club, but also an academic fraternity. It really sparked my interest at the Club Fair, so I decided to join. The most important piece of advice that I can give any prospective college student would be to take full advantage of the opportunities and undertakings that will become available. As a first year college student, the lessons I’ve learned thus far have been invaluable. I wouldn’t trade my experience at Villanova for the world.
A few days ago, I had a major Business Statistics exam. Due to the fact that my grade is entirely composed of three exams, I put a lot of effort in. Even after studying for hours, I still wasn’t mastering the material. I couldn’t think of any more resources to expend in order to boost my grade. Then I remembered the Math Resource Learning Center. The MLRC is just one of many educational assets that Villanova can boast. The chance to use the MLRC is an opportunity that most students take advantage of. Why not? It’s a very helpful tutoring service, provided free of charge to any Villanova Undergraduate. When paired with the Writing Center, the MLRC has the potential to bring you up to speed, and ensure that you are ready for whatever assignment - or exam - is headed your way. Even though I’m only in my first year as a student here, I like to think that I have a grasp on the opportunities

Furthermore, youth who volunteer are more likely to do well in school, graduate, and exercise their right to vote. When asked of their own volunteer experiences, young teens have said that some of the benefits they’ve received from volunteering include: learning to respect others; learning to be helpful and kind; learning to understand people who are different; developing leadership skills, becoming more patient, and gaining a better understanding of citizenship – all of the skills to take our students gracefully into their young adulthood with a sense of community and altruism.

Shifting The Stones By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Confucius said, “The man who moves a mountain begins by carrying away small stones.” Such is the principle of proactivity based upon, of taking small steps to advance great lengths, ultimately. The key, of course, it to begin the process. Complacency is man’s worst enemy; however, settling into such a mindset is perhaps one of the simplest tasks to accomplish. Never mind that “To Do” list – it will be there tomorrow. And the next day. And the day after that. This is closely followed by its evil bedfellow, entitlement; that sense that you somehow deserve more than you have without feeling the need to prove it, or earn it, as the case
may be. Together, these flaws can lead once promising, motivated individuals down a path of bitterness, resentment and arrogance – not a flattering combination. The problem is, you don’t see it happening. You exist day to day, you settle into your routines, and then…well, then you just settle. Plain and simple. Ambition flies out the window, and with it, that drive that propelled you forward for so many years falls flat. As easy as it is to fall prey to this downward spiral, it takes a concerted effort to right the ship and get back on course. This is where the “small stones” come into play. Even something as simple as making lists, outlines of what needs to be done in a
particular time frame, can help. Sometimes, the simple act of checking an item off can make all the difference in turning a gloomy outlook into one of positivity. One item. One stone. One day at a time. And repeat, for as long as it takes to accomplish whatever it is your goal may be, whether something as simple as saving money for a particular item; or perhaps a far loftier ambition to go out and change the world. Whatever it is, however complex, all can be achieved using the same basic steps. So begin. And maintain. And, before you know it, this newfound motivation will become the stuff of habit – the good kind… the kind that leads to a fulfilling and successful life.
BULLYING Bullying is defined as “an overbearing person who habitually badgers and intimidates smaller or weaker people,” according to http:// dictionar y.reference.com/ browse/bullying?s=t. Being a student in seventh grade and a victim of bullying, my definition for bullying is when somebody thinks you are weak, “odd” or strange and makes fun of you for being who you are simply because you are different than them. Bullying is a very serious subject. Many cases of bullying happen each day, and kids do not tell an adult so they can get help putting an end to it. I made this mistake. I did not initially tell an adult, and this lack of action only made it worse for me. If you are getting bullied, you need to tell somebody or

you could eventually become self-conscious and doubt yourself. You could lose selfesteem and believe that you are what the bully says you are and isolate yourself from your friends. You think to yourself when your friends invite you to hang out, “They are only going to turn their backs on me too. I should just stay away from them from now on so they do not bully me.” Your friends may sometimes be the only people to help in these situations. When I was bullied, it was for three years! One in ten people get bullied every day. If you notice somebody being bullied, you need to stand up for them and tell the bully, “Stop it! Leave them alone.” If you are continuing to see somebody being bullied, you need to get an adult
immediately. Sometimes you may think that people are just joking around, but their intentions are to just make fun of you without you actually realizing what they are doing to you. Bullying does not have to be just verbal; it can also be cyber bullying and also physical bullying. In my case, I was verbally bullied. The words hurt dreadfully, but one way of handling it was by talking to my family. This was my way of getting the point that I was being bullied out, and I was able to also communicate my feelings when I talked about my situation. My family guided me in techniques to handle the situation and how to put an end to the bullying. Bullying is a serious subject.

( N A P S I ) — T h e Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) found that many consumers are overwhelmed by the amount of information available to help them learn more about the financial services marketplace. At the same time, the CFPB
found one of the most popular resources offered is information about credit reports. The credit bureaus have found that information about credit reports is popular as well. “Each year, there are over 25 million free credit reports provided
to consumers,” said Stuart K. Pratt, president and CEO of the Consumer Data Industry Association. “And while that’s a significant number, there are still a considerable number of consumers who aren’t exercising their option to get their report. According
to a survey done by VantageScore and the Consumer Federation of America, 37 percent of consumers have never obtained a copy of their credit report,” he added. Consumers can get a free credit report from each of the three nationwide credit
bureaus, Equifax, Experian and Trans-Union, once a year by going to www. annualcreditreport.com. The process is easy and enables consumers to have real-time access to their credit reports. “Many people get annual medical checkups. We

Dentists and specialists from all over Suffolk County donated their time and expertise to service the pediatric community. We examined over 250 patients.” Dental Assisting Teacher Carol Donohue said, “My students got the experience of working with and of good dental health learning from the college to families with small students and interacting children. with the community.” SCDS Executive Director Tamara Chery, a dental
assisting student from Patchogue Medford UFSD, said she volunteered because, “It’s just a good thing to do.” She always wanted to do something with teeth. “I know that sounds funny but I was inspired by my general dentist.”
