Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer and Councilman Tom Donnelly recently attended a Court of Honor ceremony for Dominick Santiago, of Lindenhurst, who recently achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. The Eagle Scout is the highest achievable rank in the Boy Scouts organization. For his

Eagle project, Dominick - who has been a scout with Troop 60 since 2009 - established a measured mile walking program with pedometers at the Lindenhurst Rainbow Center. In addition, he helped construct a new shuffleboard court, and with the help of his handy grandfather, repaired and re-tipped the billiard cues

at the Rainbow Center. Supervisor Schaffer and Councilman Donnelly thanked Dominick for his commitment to the local community and presented him with an official Town of Babylon proclamation, declaring February 1st, 2017 as “Eagle Scout GREATEST GROWTH - Nassau University Medical Center officials, Dr. Politi and Dominick Santiago Day” in Ms. Skarka, congratulate the staff of the seventh floor of the hospital as they celebrate their recognition as the patient floor with the greatest growth in patient satisfaction the Town. scores for the last quarter of 2016. And just like that, the snow has melted and signs of spring have begun to sprout here and there, signaling the end of hibernation and the beginning of so many wonderful things in this second season of the year. Of course, we are not completely out of the frozen woods yet; but it certainly is nice to feel the warmth of the sun in the month of February nonetheless. Last year, March brought with it a robin’s nest, complete with four perfect blue eggs, to my grandparents’ house. I often wonder if one of the babies will return this spring to lay its own batch of eggs and continue the line of fuzzy birds born in that backyard. So many wonderful memories took place in that very spot… how fitting that new life

should be born there as well. I recently picked up a bunch of tulips and roses while shopping, deciding that the post-holiday season barrenness of my apartment could use a little splash of color to liven things up. It’s amazing what a bowl of flowers can do to improve the atmosphere of a room… how I do love to snip and arrange fresh blooms in vases on occasion. It’s times like these that I wish I had a real garden of my own to tend; but alas, decks are really only conducive to the standard potted plant. I am certainly looking forward to heading out this spring and exploring the beaches and parks of Long Island as they come back to life. Aside from the exercise these random, meandering strolls encourage, they

also give me the alwayswelcome opportunity to continue to explore my love of photography. It doesn’t matter how many times I have visited a particular place; there is always a new angle to be found, another pretty sight to document. In about a month’s time, my hope is to have my new website up and ready to launch, featuring some of these scenic snapshots from the last several years, perhaps with some prints and calendars available for purchase. In the interim, I have created a public Instagram account, so please feel free to “follow” me @jlynnspj, take a look around and stay tuned for the official launch of my site, www. SnapshotsAndSilhouettes.com. Springtime is the season of beginnings – no harm in getting a head start!

Smart ALEKS reteach material students have struggled with and cover material they may not have been taught in previous classes. Motivated students even have the ability to go beyond the core material, which includes a curriculum of 781 topics, and delve into first-year college lessons as a means to push themselves ahead of their eventual peers. Students are not limited to working on ALEKS within the classroom; it can be accessed from any device capable of using a web browser. “The ALEKS program is a unique chance for students to reach new mathematical heights that they might not ever thought possible,” said teacher Frank Miata. “There is no limit to the

amount of material they can learn in this class. If a student’s goal is to strengthen their math skills to better themselves, raise their math score on the SAT or prepare for college, this course will ensure their success.” One of the program’s best features is that it allows students to work at their own pace, fostering a sense of responsibility and accomplishment. “It actually makes you pay attention,” said student Robert Boykin. “You have to do it on your own.” “With ALEKS in the classroom, it is as if every student has their own personal tutor,” said Miata. “Our goal is to better every student and allow them to reach their full potential.”

Shed-ucation At Deer Park High School, the 20 students participating in the brandnew home improvement program recently built a fully functional shed from scratch, learning all of the necessary construction techniques under the direction of teacher John Abeltin. While becoming familiarized with tools and materials, the students are mastering valuable skills such as basic wiring, including outlets and switches; painting plumbing; framing; designing with a hypotenuse; and cutting rafters. “They did a fabulous job, and are totally engaged

in learning the basics of construction,” said Abeltin, who has 30 years of experience as a contractor under his belt. He taught middle school with Deer Park for a quarter-century, but moved up to the high school specifically to imbue the home improvement course with his deep knowledge of construction. “This home improvement course is a great addition to our technology offerings in Deer Park,” said David Knuffke, the district’s curriculum associate for science and technology. “The kinds of hands-on, practical skills that the students learned when building the shed will help prepare them for life

beyond the walls of our high school. Courses like this also help align our technology program with the types of engineering practices that New York State is moving towards with its recent adoption of new science learning standards, which put an emphasis on practical problem solving and designed engineering solutions. We’re fortunate to have Mr. Abeltin on staff to develop the course. He’s a master carpenter, and the students respect his knowledge and enjoy the opportunity to work with him. I’m excited to see where the program goes from here.”

John Wevers passed away January 22nd, after a long illness of PKD (polycystic kidney disease and multiple myeloma). He was born on October 1, 1951, in Copiague, Long Island, grew up in Deer Park and eventually resided in Jamesport. A graduate of Deer Park High School in Deer Park, NY, and both Long Island University and Trenton State college, John worked a few years in the 1970’s teaching High School Band in both Westfield, New Jersey and South Brunswick, New Jersey. He moved back to Long Island in 1981 and was the Band Director in West Babylon High School for one year. In 1984 he became the Marching Band Director in Copiague High School and led the band to five State Championships in the NYSFBC (New York State Field Band Conference) in ’96, ’02, ’03, ’05 and ’06 as well as eight U.S. Band Championships and EMBA Grand Championships over his career in Copiague. His band participated annually in the New York City St. Patrick’s Day Parade and three times marched in the Florida Citrus Bowl Parade. In 2008, he led his band in the MACY’S Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City. In 2005, his band appeared in the opening scene of the movie “Lord of War” with Nicholas Cage. John served as President of SCMEA (1995-1996) and remained an active member throughout his career. He retired from Copiague High School in 2012. In retirement, John was working on getting his Doctorate in Christian counseling at Trinity College of the Bible and Theological Seminary and was working on his Thesis. He is survived by his wife Linda (nee Johnsen), sons Douglas and John, Brother Anthony (Jean), pre-deceased by his sister Eileen Hutchinson (Thomas), Barbara Welsh (Robert), Patricia Wevers-Heine, and many beloved nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. John reposed at Claude R. Boyd/Caratozzolo Funeral Home on Thursday, January 26th and was buried in Pinelawn Memorial Park in Farmingdale with Pastor Chris Bauer, (his longtime friend), officiating the service.

The Deer Park school community experienced a huge loss last August, when beloved kindergarten teacher Fran Levesque tragically passed away from pancreatic cancer. Levesque poured her heart and soul into teaching the children of Deer Park for more than 30 years, and her sudden passing left staff, students and parents stunned and deeply saddened. Over 100 Nassau BOCES Barry Tech students from the school’s Healthcare Classes came together recently for an anticyberbully workshop. Cyberbullying remains a hot topic since recent reports claim that 43% of teenagers have been bullied online over the past year. These statistics prompted students and staff to view the movie, Cyberbully, and reflect on how the issue effects them

in their everyday digital lives. Students referred to a specially created Movie Viewing Guide as they watched the video, which was followed by a discussion led by the school’s social worker, Nancy Tuck. The students were given a list of resources and information was distributed about cyber bullying, its effects on others and what to do if you are a victim. “The film sparked conversation among our

students,” said Barry Tech Assistant Principal Dr. William Poll. “Students talked about ways to handle cyberbullying situations, while our Social Worker provided resources and strategies for this challenge that students face every day.” Barry Tech Physical Therapy Aide teacher Dr. Michelle Fattore was instrumental in bringing the program to the school. “I think it’s important to remind students of their

Important Lesson responsibility when they post anything on the internet,” said Dr. Fattore. “They need to know the ramifications of posting negative comments, as well as the resources available to them if they become a victim of cyberbullying.” Dr. Poll opened the session by reminding the students that, “Barry Tech is a bully-free zone and the healthcare classes are passionate about stomping out bullying.” The workshop launched a school-wide campaign. Students left their colorful hand prints on banners to be displayed around the school stating their commitment to keeping Barry Tech a bully-free zone. “Barry Tech is a safe environment where I feel safe and I can express myself,” said Barry Tech Physical Therapy Aide and Rehabilitation Medicine student Veronica Scruggs
