tudents at Deer Park’s May Moore Primary School were treated to a special visit from Jim Jones of Volunteers for Wildlife and four live owls during the school’s inaugural Whoooo’s Who Owls Of The Night Discovery Program. The assembly complemented this year’s school-wide theme centered on owls, and served as the perfect ending to May Moore’s weeklong Add & Explore Math & Science Fair.

The NDPP is a community-based program conducted by trained lifestyle coaches to teach people with prediabetes how to modify their eating and physical activity habits, and to sustain those changes over time. Each one-hour class includes lessons on diet, exercise, staying motivated, overcoming stress, and other behavioral changes, all in a supportive group setting. The goal is to help people reduce their weight through a healthy low-calorie, low-fat diet and by engaging in at least 150 minutes per week of physical activity. This evidence-based
lifestyle intervention has been shown to help participants lose 5–7% of their body weight and reduce their risk of developing Type 2 diabetes by 50%. Grant awards to organizations from the Bronx to Buffalo will support a range of activities to help organizations implement and grow the NDPP, including the expansion of existing programs; communication, outreach, and education activities to obtain a steady flow of participants; and development of business plans to ensure the sustainability of the program. At a recent Deer Park High School blood drive, students and staff sat back comfortably, listening to the gentle sounds of Bob Marley, as technicians from Long Island Blood Services drew blood that will serve a crucial purpose. “Every pint saves three people’s lives,” explained Deer Park health teacher Sherry Deacon, using
burn victims and children battling leukemia as examples of the kind of people whose lives can be immeasurably helped by blood donation. “The point is you are giving to save a life.” Deacon also noted an ancillary benefit of the blood drives for the students involved. “It really encourages civic

responsibility,” she said. Deer Park’s blood donation program has been in operation for a dozen years, and involves three drives per school year. The process is run by Long Island Blood Services, who in turn provide two $250 scholarships each year for graduating Deer Park High School seniors.
Is it spring yet? Are we done with the endless parade of winter storms, bringing their onslaught of rain and sleet and slush and snow and ice and all that fun stuff? I know there are those who absolutely LOVE this season and all its wondrous whiteness, but seriously… enough is enough, don’t you think? Over the last several months, our lives have been literally consumed by national weather forecasts, a succession of storms with oh-so-cute names, a lifetime supply of rock salt
and sand, mad rushes to the store for milk and eggs and bread (you know, for all those “milk” sandwiches you make while snowed in!) and the fabulous process of shoveling, cleaning the car off, shoveling the new mound of icy boulders generously distributed by the plows… and on and on and on. Oh, and that’s before we attempt the treacherous process of actually driving anywhere. Like I said, is it spring yet? So many have said that, this year, after the winter we’ve had, they promise not to complain about the heat. 90º and humid?
Awesome, sign me up! Torrential downpours and thunderstorms? At least we won’t have to shovel! Stay tuned. Guaranteed, the first heat wave we experience, all that will go out the window. Too much of anything is irritating, especially when it disrupts our daily routine. A little here and there – sure, we can all deal with that. But this winter has been one of extremes. Of course, as I write these words, the forecast is calling for 50º next week. Time to break out the tank tops and shorts; but better keep that shovel handy!

The assembly complemented this year’s schoolwide theme centered on owls and served as the perfect ending to May Moore’s weeklong Add and Explore math and science fair.

learned numerous facts about these amazing birds, including their behavior as predators, their nocturnal lifestyle, and the different hoots and other sounds each species makes. “We loved the tiny screech owls and were amazed at the wingspan of the barred owl,” said Principal Alicia Konecny. “Many of our students had only previously seen an owl in the Harry Potter movies, so it was awesome to see them up close.”

Dozens of blood drives have been canceled because of bad weather. Blood drives that are continuing have experienced greatly reduced attendance, while operations at NYBC’s many walk-in donor centers are similarly affected. “I urge residents to donate to this vital cause,” Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone said. “So many people depend on donations to survive serious illnesses or accidents.
