Human Nature? By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Let me start off by saying, accidents happen. We all have our moments of distraction on the road. Add to that, heightened tension due to weather conditions (even if said conditions don’t happen to be a factor at the time, but we’re giving the benefit of the doubt here), and the forces of human nature, mixed with Mother Nature, sometimes create catastrophic results. Where am I going with this tangent, you ask? Just a preface to my recent run-in with a fellow motorist, is all. Well, his runin with me, to be exact. At a red light. Behind a line of about 12 other vehicles. Clearly stopped. Not moving. No ice, no slush, no nothing on the road. Getting the picture? So, obviously, you can imagine my astonishment upon glancing in my rearview mirror – as I habitually do when on the roads
– to see headlights approaching at what seemed too fast for an appropriate slowdown and stop maneuver. Sure enough, there it was, the impact, the sound of car metal crunching and cracking, along with the squeal of brakes. Lovely. Just lovely. Luckily, another one of my driving habits is to leave a bit of room between the front of my car and the one in front of mine, saving me the added inconvenience of continuing the potential chain reaction of collisions. One minor crisis averted. All of this, mind you, and the light had yet to change to green. No sooner did I get my bearings, than the driver – a young, college-aged male with a knit hat – appeared at my driver’s side window to apologize profusely and ask if I was alright. I rolled down my window, clearly angry, and said, “Yeah, I’m fine, but my car sure isn’t.” He continued to apologize and suggested we
pull out of the line of traffic and into the parking lot of an office building right alongside the road. Great idea. As I pulled off to the shoulder and continued into the agreedupon lot, the light changed. Wanting to be sure I was out of the entryway (and further harm’s way), I found a spot off to the side and waited. And waited. I watched the continuous stream of traffic drive by, with no sign of the guilty party. Gone. Took off. You must be kidding. Hence the tangent. And the anger. And the feeling that, in spite of the fact that “accidents happen” from time to time and none of us is perfect, there is no excuse for not owning up to your actions after the fact. That’s just bad karma. So, to the other driver, I hope you can live with your decision to run from your mistake. May you never have the misfortune for someone to do precisely the same thing to you.

Blood Donations Needed The American Red Cross encourages eligible donors to help ensure a sufficient and diverse blood supply by giving blood this February. Since the beginning of the year, widespread flu and inclement winter weather in some parts of the country have prevented many regular donors from making or keeping their blood donation appointments. Healthy and diverse blood donors are
needed to help maintain a sufficient blood supply. Diversity among blood donors is important because red blood cells carry markers that determine one’s blood type, and certain blood types are unique to specific racial and ethnic groups. Blood must be matched very closely for those patients with rare blood types or for those who need repeated transfusions. Patients
are less likely to have complications from blood donated by someone with a similar ethnicity. All blood types are needed, especially types O negative, A negative and B negative. Bubbles were floating everywhere at Deer Park’s May Moore Primary School on January 30th when students were treated to the exciting “Bubblemania!” assembly program sponsored by the school’s PFC and presented by renowned entertainer Seth Bloom. Melding science, art and comedy, “Bubblemania!” provided interesting facts about bubbles while delighting the young
learners in attendance. From homemade bubble solutions to the properties of surface tension, the science of what the bluehaired, blue-gloved Bloom dubbed “bubble-ology” was explored. Bloom, who presents more than 350 shows a year worldwide, even made floating bubble spaceships and completely enclosed awe-struck firstgrader Cannan Williams inside a giant soap bubble. “The students and staff
loved learning the science behind bubbles,” said Principal Alicia Konecny. “Bubbles not only involve children in learning, but they are fun, easy to use and ever-changing. The best part was seeing the wondrous reactions of the students to the different sized bubbles. They were completely engaged in the various experiments, though I’m certain they enjoyed popping them the best of all!”
Embracing Differences At a recent meeting of the Babylon Town Board, Supervisor Schaffer joined with his colleagues on the board to unanimously approve a resolution proclaiming the month of April as “Upper Limb Difference Month” to show support for families of children who were born with missing hands, fingers or arms. This resolution was passed to show encouragement for the efforts of “Unlimbited Possibilities,” an
organization that provides support and resources to families of children with upper limb differences. Members of the organization were in attendance for the meeting to celebrate the unanimous passage of the declaration. Unlimbited Possibilities is a not-for-profit corporation that was founded in 2003 and was the first upper limb difference organization on Long Island. The organization was founded by parents of children with
upper limb differences with the purpose of coming together to offer support, share information and raise awareness about the issues that these families face. Since their inception, Unlimbited Possibilities has held numerous community events, raffles and auctions for their cause. In April, they will be hosting their first ever walk-a-thon in the Town of Babylon.
