An Ode to Driving on LI I’m willing to go out on a limb to say that even those who would count winter as their favorite season do not enjoy driving in the snow and icy conditions it brings, especially if they live on Long Island. Just the other morning, after a surprise helping of the white stuff, I was reminded of the joys of a morning commute in about six inches of slush… The privilege of driving behind those with an aversion to cleaning off their rooftops and back windows… The honor of inching behind drivers who seem to think that to surpass 20 mph would be criminal… The thrill of testing out my brakes every car length or so, as people ahead come to a screeching halt due to…what, exactly? I couldn’t tell you.

Sure, I understand the anxiety which can come from being forced to travel in such conditions – to a degree. But when a few select drivers and their inability to, you know, drive are the cause? Well, that’s where I lose patience. I’m pretty sure they teach this stuff in driver’s ed, in defensive driving courses – or in the big old handbook known as common sense. It’s not rocket science people. #1. You need to see the road, so clean windows and mirrors are a must. #2. The rest of us need to see the road as well, so having an 18-inch clump of snow fly off the back of someone’s car into your windshield… not the most conducive to aforementioned point. #3. Brakes do not respond well on wet pavement, snow or ice – so it is best to

These are just a few of the more important points I encountered on my journey to work, on a 20-mile straight stretch of road with no fewer than a dozen or so drivers wreaking havoc. We’ve been fortunate this winter, but that’s not to say we have been – or will be – spared completely. A few more morning or evening rush hours like that, and we’ll all be counting down the days to spring. Conscientious Deer Park High School student Gregory Garrison chose to create a special autism awareness mural at May Moore Elementary School as his Eagle Scout project, aided by fellow Scouts. Garrison’s 7 year-old brother, Cole,

has been in the school’s autism program since kindergarten. The mural’s installation was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on January 25th. “I decided on this project because I wanted to spread autism awareness

and let everyone know that the children in the autism program are an important part of the May Moore family and the community,” said Garrison, who was honored at a January Board of Education meeting.

MLK Program Held For the 46th consecutive year, Northwell Health employees gathered to honor the teachings and vision of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The ceremony, held at North Shore University Hospital’s Rust Auditorium, was simulcast to other Northwell facilities across the New York/ metro area. This year’s keynote speaker was Dr. Freeman Hrabowski, president of UMBC (The University of Maryland, Baltimore

County) and a child leader in the civil rights movement, who was featured in Spike Lee’s 1997 documentary, Four Little Girls, the story of the 1963 bombing of Birmingham’s 16th Street Baptist Church. His presentation focused on the importance of inspiring young people to take action. Dr. Hrabowski spoke to students who had been invited to the event saying: “Each of us ifthe product of our childhood experiences.

Think of it…what you do right now could determine what you do in the future.” He then recounted his memories of hearing Dr. King speak for the first time as a 12 year-old boy in Birmingham. Following the tragic bombing at the 16th Street Church, he said he was determined to join other young students in a peaceful march through the streets of Birmingham. But first, he sought his parents’ permission to march.

“At first, they were against it. But the next day, my father gave his permission,” Dr. Hrabowski said. “They told me they prayed about it, but in the end, they supported me.” That support from family and community is a cornerstone of his concept of empowering young people “On a day when we celebrate the achievements of Dr. King,” he said, “I would encourage our young people to dream

The Youth Court oath was administered by Supervisor Schaffer to the new inductees in attendance. The goal of the Youth Court is to reduce juvenile

STARS & STRIPES LOUNGE - On Thursday, January 28th, a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new “Stars and Stripes Lounge” at the Suffolk County Community College (SCCC) Eastern Campus in Riverhead was held. Tools for Caregivers As our population ages, more and more spouses, adult children and friends find themselves in the role of caregiver to a loved one suffering from a chronic, often catastrophic health condition. There are an estimated 65.7 Americans caring for someone who is ill, disabled or aged, according the AARP and the National Alliance for Caregiving. Research shows that caregiving takes a tremendous toll. Caregivers report high levels of depression and anxiety as well as increased vulnerability to their own health problems. To help provide caregivers with the tools to cope with the stress and demands they face, Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip is offering “Powerful Tools for Caregivers,”

a six-week, evidence based course that provides information and education. Each session focuses on life skills to help attendees reduce stress, improve selfconfidence, enhance communication, make important decisions, locate resources, and ultimately achieve more balance in their lives. Led by Chaplain Mary Anne Bonner from Good Samaritan’s Pastoral Care Department, the program meets on six consecutive Wednesday evenings: March 16th, 23rd, 30th, April 6th, 13th and 20th, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. There is no charge for the program, but a $25 donation is suggested to help defray the cost of “The Caregiver Helpbook,” a valuable resource which is distributed to each
