Elementary Igloo Project

re-kindergartners at Deer Park’s John Quincy Adams Primary School recently participated in a perfect winter project, one that develops early science and mathematics concepts while serving as a terrific way to recycle used plastic jugs. With the help of several class parents, teacher Laura Oddo’s students collected hundreds of gallonsize milk and water jugs to construct a six-foot-high igloo.

kick off our winter theme,” said Oddo. “The students learn about such things as Arctic animals, the water cycle, how temperature affects matter, and how both animals and people survive the cold winter months.” Parents were invited to the classroom for the “igloo reveal,” while students celebrated by creating Eskimo figurines out of paper and cotton balls. Inside the igloo, which was decorated with colored lights, the children enjoyed ice fishing for toy fish and letters, a “learning through play” opportunity for them to practice letter and number recognition as well as counting skills. The igloo will remain standing through February, after which Oddo’s class will take it apart to determine exactly how many jugs were used while discussing recycling concepts.

Deer Park High School’s theater students displayed mastery of the art of comedy at the school’s winter play, delivering on their ambitions with a successful production of Oscar Wilde’s witty and farcical classic The Importance of Being Earnest, directed by teacher James Henry with assistance from the returning student director, junior Mauricio Montes.

The cast at two sterling weekend performances included senior Joseph McGarty as John Worthing, senior David Reyes as Algernon Moncrieff, senior James Boss as Rev. Canon Chasuble, junior Sam Henkel as Merriman, junior Anthony Anello as Lane, senior Jennifer Somma as Lady Bracknell, senior Sabrina Rudden as Gwendolen Fairfax, junior Christina O’Toole as

Cecily Cardew and junior Jessica Orelus as Miss Prism. The production was enhanced by Sherry Kfare’s costuming and smart set design by Eileen Cullinane. “The students really met the challenge of doing an older British play,” said Henry, noting that Earnest, which was first performed in London in 1895, is aptly subtitled A Trivial Comedy for Serious People.

don’t get me wrong, but the idea of tailgating in the freezing cold – eh, not so appealing. Add to that the fact that my only NFL rooting interest lies in New England (yes, I know, blasphemy), and I have never actively pursued acquiring tickets to a game to this point. Of course, a few weeks back, when the Patriots still stood a chance of making it to the end, the thought brieﬂy crossed my mind. Wouldn’t that be an incredible first football experience? Ah, but it was not to be. Instead, I, like millions of others, will be watching

the game from the comfort of my own home, on the couch, surrounded by snacks. I rarely have much of a rooting interest, but the broadcast is usually good for a few classic commercials and a fairly entertaining Halftime performance. We, as a collective society, will watch, discuss the highlights for a few days and then promptly forget who won, who even played, until next year when the football season revs up once again. And so it goes. On to more important things – like how many days ‘til pitchers and catchers report?

Ten members of the Deer Park High School varsity boys track team competed at the 32nd Annual Yale Interscholastic Track Classic on January 17th18th. The prestigious invitational event, held at Yale University in New Haven, Conn., is one of the most competitive indoor track meets in the Northeast. Deer Park’s participants included the school’s 4x800-meter relay squad and five runners

vying for the 3,000-meter invitational race. “Just to give you an idea of how big a meet this is, in the 3,000-meter race alone, there were over 300 competitors from high schools all over the East Coast,” explained Deer Park’s head coach Tom Brouillard, who accompanied the athletes along with assistant coach Mario Fieore. All of the Deer Park runners who competed at

Yale ran personal bests, with some finishing in the top 10 of their respective heats of the 3,000-meter race. “Our varsity runners represented Deer Park proudly at the Yale invitational,” said Brouillard. “The boys competed against some of the best high school runners in the tri-state area and they all made me and Mr. Fieore extremely proud of their efforts.”

Two out of Deer Park High School’s five math teams participated in the 2014 Suffolk County Math Tournament, held at Suffolk County Community College, with student Aaron Zhang earning first place for juniors for the second year in a row. The school’s quintet of upperclassmen – Kyle Devine, Sabrina Grunseich, Andreas Stamatakis, Nick Vitale and Zhang – won fifth place overall. The freshman/sophomore team consisting of Ryan Byrne, Joseph Curry, Peter Demopoulos, Theresa Grimaldi and Joseph Sanchez competed but did not place. The team, known as the Deer Park Math Squad, has attended the tournament for more than eight years. Students prep by practicing questions from past competitions, aided by teacher and Math Squad coach Kevin McCreesh. “Aaron Zhang’s performance was tremendous, and I am very proud of how the entire group performed,” said McCreesh. “These students have placed Deer Park among the top math squads in the county.”
