The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office is pleased to announce that one of its finest was named Officer of the Year and awarded The Howard C. Stock Memorial Award at the 45th Annual Police Awards sponsored by the Southampton Town
outcomes for incarcerated youth. She was instrumental in developing Sheriff Vincent DeMarco’s Incarcerated Youth Initiative and has made it her mission to provide guidance, mentoring and hope to justice involved teens under her care at the Riverhead Correctional Facility. Officer McCray is also a leader in her community of Central Islip where she is a board member of the Youth Empowerment Project and a founding member of Building Bridges Uniting Communities. In addition to The Howard C. Stock Memorial Award, Officer McCray was presented with the Correction Officer of the Year Award along with Deputy Sheriff Michael Kern, who was named Deputy Sheriff of the Year during the ceremony. Officer Kern is a Drug Recognition Expert with the Sheriff’s Office and an instructor for the New York State Drug Recognition Training Program. He has taught hundreds of officers throughout New York State in advanced policing techniques and his enforcement efforts have resulted in countless DWI and DUI arrests in Suffolk County. Deputy Sheriff Kern is a ten-year veteran of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, and also served as a New York City Police Officer for seven years. Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco could not be more proud of the work of Officers McCray and Kern, and stated, “Suffolk County residents are fortunate to have two of the finest public servants working on their behalf as members of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office. I am grateful to the members of the Kiwanis Club for paying tribute to our staff, but also for recognizing the fine work performed by highly dedicated law enforcement officers in all the East End towns.”

Winter’s Wrath By: Jamie Lynn Ryan So, one epic snowstorm/ blizzard/”Juno” (who names these things, by the way?) into the Winter of 2015, and I’ve just about had my fill. How about you? As lovely and peaceful as a blanket of freshly fallen snow looks on the landscape, unfortunately, “snow days” only last for about one day, if that. Once the plows emerge, and the salt and sand turns the pristine landscape into a mountain range of dirty, frozen boulders, the novelty wears off pretty quickly – even faster if you are the one responsible for shoveling it. This past week, after hibernating for as long as possible and savoring the
“day off,” I ventured into the great void of white, shovel and scraper in hand, and attempted to determine which mound might be my car. After wading through the untouched walkways and parking lot of my complex, it was time to begin the dreaded clearing-off-the-car process. Easier said than done. After standing on my tiptoes, vainly trying to reach the summit, I was able to push off most of the twofoot accumulation – only to have a mini-avalanche fall to either side of my car. What had been knee-deep snow was now waist-deep. Spectacular. And so it went, for hours, as I slowly made headway. Two things occurred to me during this time. #1 – I
desperately need a larger shovel, and #2 – I need to move to a warmer climate. Immediately. I realize that one major snowstorm through the first six weeks of winter qualifies as fairly fortunate. But seriously, did we need to make up for a season’s worth of snow totals in just one day? Mother Nature sure doesn’t play around. Add to that the fact that February – statistically speaking, according to the too-gleefulfor-my-taste newscasters – is the snowiest month of all and, well, refer back to point #2 above. In lieu of that, I suppose I could at least go shovel shopping before the next big one hits.

12 Angry Students Sixth through eighth grade students at Saints Cyril and Methodius (SSCM) School in Deer Park came away with a lot more than a Playbill with their name in it last weekend, as the curtain came down on their final performance of Twelve Angry Men. The dedicated group of youngsters have been in rehearsals since September and played to a pretty full house in the Father Behan Auditorium all weekend long. Together with a small stage crew, the group worked tirelessly at not only memorizing lines, but learning a surprising amount about our legal system, group process and communication, peer pressure and more. Terms such as “due process” and concepts such as “reasonable doubt” had never taken on such true meaning as the group worked to understand the challenge that each of the jurors they were playing was up against. (If you’ve never seen the play, teleplay, or either of the movies based on the play, they come highly recommended and the movies are both available streaming on Amazon.com.) The level of attention to detail was evident from the simple, but well-planned set design to the character development of some of the most outspoken jury members and the meekest alike. Clearly, an impressive amount of preparation and comprehension went into the planning of SSCM’s production from start to finish.
Perhaps most fitting of all, since this was performed by a group of 11-14 year-olds dramatically discussing the serious topic of a man on trial for the murder of his own father, it was ingenious that the Director of the school play took time after each performance to bring the group of tweens and teens back onto the stage for
a bit of discussion time with the audience. They shared with the audience, almost James Lipton-style, a bit about their acting process, about what they’d learned and what they’d taken away that might have been completely unexpected from their theater experience. From the mouths of babes, as they say, eh? Some of the youngest performers, quite maturely, shared that

Of the Deer Park entrants, 22 received trophies for their performances and six received honorable mention. Adam Ahmed won first place and Shahan Mian came in third, both for the Principles of Finance event. These students have earned the right to participate in the State Career Conference in upstate Rochester in early March, where they will compete against 2,000 of New York’s best business students for the chance to participate in the International Career Development Conference in Orlando, Florida at the end of April. “Deer Park DECA continues to be one of Suffolk County’s most successful chapters,” said the club’s adviser, business teacher Gregory Menig. “Despite graduating 40 members last June, our students have once again been able to produce outstanding results at the regional competition. I’m looking forward to seeing what this year’s award winners are able to accomplish in Rochester in March.”
they had never realized that sometimes, it just takes one voice...one person in a crowd, to have the courage to stand up for another human being. It occurred to them after reading through the play and then acting it out, that this kind of courage is possible and if we have the strength to be that one voice, one solitary person can make a difference. Others shared that the whole experience was very meaningful to them on a personal level, some of them having to stand up to friends who may have been less than supportive when they’d mentioned signing up for the play early on. While another few mentioned that the thought of public speaking had always scared the daylights out of them, which is why they had decided to challenge themselves and go for it! It was clear that the students took away a whole lot more than a playbill and a flash new hat from wardrobe. Getting involved in theater arts is a valuable outlet for students of any age, and particularly on-stage time. With nearly 75% of the population experiencing glossophobia or fear of public speaking, getting accustomed to stage-time early in life can be so key in developing the skills to overcome such anxiety. After all, as Shakespeare wrote, ”All the world’s a stage” - is it not? Heartfelt congratulations to all of the performers, stage crew, faculty, staff and those who volunteered their time to make SSCM’s performance such a success!

Volunteer Installation Dinner
Research studies in Germany, in conjunction with the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg suggest that “the production of visual art improves effective interaction” between parts of the brain - a worthy endeavor for the old and young alike! At Saints Cyril and Methodius School in Deer Park, Art Teacher Vincent Montella nurtures the students’ artistic abilities while educating them on the arts, both classic and modern, in the most hands-on ways possible. Since the start of the school year, SSCM students in all grades have been studying various artists, their works, understanding their particular styles and favorite medium - each working on age-appropriate projects to showcase their newly acquired skills and learning.
Students in seventh and eighth grades, for example, selected an artist of their choice from various periods in Art History. They then studied this artist’s works in more depth and emulated one of his or her works using acrylic on canvas to depict their own version of the artist’s style and techniques. This Spring, the young artists will perform their “Living Museum”, in which each student will dress up as their artist of choice, and ”become” a living exhibit next to their own work of art. Think ”wax museum” come to life! Guests will have the opportunity to stroll through this Living Museum and ”interact” with the ”exhibits” by pressing a button at each display. The student-artist will Come to Life and immediately begin delivering a pre-planned
speech he or she has written up and prepared, covering the life of the artist, his or her techniques and an interpretation of the particular work of art he or she chose to emulate. While it’s a fun and interesting way for teachers at SSCM to help the material come to life, it’s also a smart way to enhance the love of learning while simultaneously boosting brain functionality. Apart from the recent research linking creative art to increased brain activity in seniors, countless childhood studies have shown that creating art builds confidence, introduces children to various cultures, helps children express feelings in a constructive manner, and has numerous positive physiological effects, from connecting left and right brain activity to improving hand-eye coordination.

Suffolk County Community College Women’s Basketball Head Coach and Athletic Director Kevin Foley, of Blue Point, earned his 400th career win last week when Suffolk defeated Hostos Community College 86-30. Foley is completing his 23nd year at the helm of Suffolk’s Women’s team that has advanced to the playoffs in 20 consecutive years. Foley’s 400th win with Suffolk’s Sharks complements an overall
400-125 record, including playing in 14 semi-finals, winning six regional championships, and a national title. Additionally, Foley’s teams have won one national and 11 regional sportsmanship awards and more than 41 of his former players have continued their intercollegiate athletic careers at four-year Division II and Division III schools. “Athletic Director Foley is wholeheartedly a Shark. He is an excellent teacher,
first and then an awesome coach, second,” said Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay, adding, “he is not only a great, winning coach, but just as importantly Coach Foley leads by example with his upbeat attitude, the first ingredient of success in basketball and in life.” Foley graduated from Seton Hall High School in 1965, where he averaged 30 points per game as a senior

When the waters of my sorrow meet This cold indifferent wall, There is no other way. My arctic tears are whipped to whitest snow That drifts and blows about the countryside.
