Peacocks & Pretty Things Beauty. They say it is in the eye of the beholder; but truly, it exists all around us, if we take the time to notice. My love of photography has certainly enhanced my ability to appreciate the aesthetics of my surroundings, from interesting cloud formations while waiting for sunsets, to pretty roadside blossoms that would otherwise be characterized as weeds to the undiscerning eye, to the novelty of light and shadow as it plays out upon a surface. Such is the abstract nature of visual “art.” And then there are the moments when it appears before you in its most natural, stunningly striking form. Case in point: several weeks ago, my friend and I enjoyed a late lunch at the famed Milleridge Inn, having both decided that it was the perfect locale after having not dined there in quite some time. To our surprise, the holiday lights were still on full display, with remnants of the Christmas season in every corner of the restaurant and shops. Having just finished dismantling my own decorations the previous week, I was at once

nostalgic and slightly weary of them. As we exited the bakery and made our way to the official Christmas shop located on the property, I spotted what appeared to be a large bird sitting on the railing of the ice cream parlor. “Is that real?” I whispered to my friend, “Or just a decoration?” We stared intently, only to be instantly startled. “It moved! Oh my gosh, it moved!” As we tentatively approached, we realized it was a GIANT peacock. And with that, no less than half a dozen others peered out from behind various corners and crevices, along with several chickens and peahens. Unfazed by the humans before them, they moseyed to and fro, pausing briefly to study us. Thoroughly infatuated, we wandered after them, attempting to snap pictures and even a few short videos of these majestic feathered creatures. As I knelt down and tentatively reached my hand out toward one especially beautiful specimen, my friend grabbed my phone to

capture the sight. The bird cocked his head slightly, examining me carefully, then strode purposefully toward me. Unsure if he was planning to sit on my lap or - more likely - to take a sizable bite out of me, I froze, backing away slightly. “Did you get the picture?” I nervously called to my friend. “Yes, I think I took about 27 of them,” she replied giggling. Alright then, no sense pushing my luck. I quickly stood up as the peacock stared at me, seemingly perplexed. “Sorry pretty bird, thanks for the photo op.” And with that, he fluttered his massive wings and took off, soaring to a nearby tree branch. By that point, a small crowd had gathered around us, amazed that this one bird had taken such an apparent liking to me. A little boy exclaimed to his parents, “Wow, they fly???” Peering up at the bird, now perched overhead, my friend and I looked at each other in utter amazement. “That,” I said, “was clearly the highlight of the day.” Beauty. It’s everywhere.

Educators Present A team of six Deer Park English as a new language teachers and District Administrator of ENL and World Languages Ashley Rosenberg were recently selected by the New York State Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages to present at the organization’s annual conference. For the presentation, titled, “Creating Culturally Relevant and Globally Empathetic Lessons,

K-12,” Rosenberg and teachers Marcella Biordi, Megan Boccard, Michelle Champlin, Kimberly Essig, Danielle Finocchiaro and Vanessa Pizzo compiled ideas and lessons they create to meet the needs of Deer Park’’ diverse English Language Learners. The seven educators were also given the opportunity to network with various ENL teachers and administrators from across the state.

“In addition to presenting information, we also had the opportunity to learn,” said Rosenberg. “Overall, presenting at the conference was a great opportunity and our team did wonderfully. I truly commend the teachers who took time out of their weekends to communicate their excellent ideas and lessons, which will benefit ELLs statewide.”

“Providing Hope Beyond The Food” . . . this is a phrase often used at Lighthouse Mission, a mobile food pantry on Long Island. Pastor Jim Ryan is the President of this inspiring ministry that reaches 2,000 people per week with the mission to share the Gospel of Jesus and feed the poor. Lighthouse Mission is a registered non-profit that operates 100% on donations, receiving no government help. They operate a very impressive Food Outreach weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays (visit their website at www. LighthouseMission.com for a full Food Outreach Schedule). Instead of operating this outreach from a single location, Lighthouse Mission chose to go mobile and travel to different locations where those in need could line up to receive plenty of nutritional food, gently used clothing and hear the word of God from one of the pastors working the event. Pastor Jim Ryan mentioned to me that they were inspired to operate this outreach in a mobile manner because the Gospel

tells us that, when going to help others, Jesus traveled to them instead of having them to come to Him. Lighthouse Mission also has a Youth Outreach that operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Every Tuesday, they open their facility to high school students and offer them food, entertainment and time to socialize in a Christian setting. Every Wednesday, they do the same for middle school students; and on the first and third Saturday of each month, they offer this for students K-5. All of these events are free of charge and open to everyone. If you are interested in becoming involved with this organization, there are plenty of ways to do so. They gladly accept clothing and food donations and currently are in need of winter coats. As far as volunteering, they accept walk-on volunteers at all of their Food Outreach events. BAKING PROJECT For her Girl Scout Silver Award Kaitlyn Incandela, of Deer Park Girl Scout Troop 1163, committed to baking and delivering hundreds of dog biscuits for the pets awaiting homes at the Town of Babylon Animal Shelter in West Babylon. To make her project endure past her involvement for the purposes of this project, she also built and donated a case to keep treats safe and fresh for the pets in the future. Great job Kaitlyn and congratulations on the completion of your Silver Award project!

The Pilot Club is an organization that assists various support programs here on Long Island. They have donated medical equipment to those in need, given needy children backpacks filled with school supplies, spent time with special needs adults and more! They have been helping others for more than 30 years and continue to help those in need around Long Island to this day. Wellness Camp Held For their Girl Scout Silver Award project Gianna Giffone and Madison Mattera planned and hosted a Wellness Camp for younger scouts. They taught lessons about nutrition, fitness, safety, making friends, dealing with conflict with friends and other wellness related

topics. Each day, the campers prepared their own healthy snacks, such as smoothies and fruit kabobs. They played games like kickball, relay racing and charades. The campers had a great time and Gianna and Madison did an awesome job.

A special thank you needs to be mentionedto the Deer Park Fire Department for granting permission to use the grounds at Fireman’s Field. Congratulations Gianna and Madison on completing your Silver Award projects!

At DECA’s Suffolk County Regional Competition, held on January 3rd at Suffolk County Community College, 55 Deer Park High School students competed against more than 1,400 participants from 26 other Suffolk schools, with 21 students honored with trophies and another seven earning honorable mention. Trophy winners included Hallie Feldman in the Apparel & Accessories Marketing event, Vicken Khazar in Entrepreneurship, William Buckley and Sean Sanchez in Financial Services Team, Khaja Ibrahim and Tyler Tesoriero in

Hospitality Services Team, Jessica Siford in Hotel & Lodging Management, Omar Rahim a n d Amar Qasir in Human Resources Management, Navan Hassan in Marketing Communications, Khabiba Shahid and Esteysy Yanes-Amaya in Personal Financial Literacy, Jasleen Kaur and Keryn Shames in Principles of Business Management, Mohammed Raiyan and Chaim Shames in Principles of Finance, Deirdre Burke in Principles of Hospitality, Alisha Suhail in Quick Serve Restaurant Management, Alyssa Robb in Restaurant & Food Service Management, and Eiman Nawaz and Yasmeen Syedda-Hensley in Travel

Young Scientists As part of an in-depth Teacher’s College science unit, students in Laura Oddo and Vanessa Pizzo’s co-teaching class at Deer Park’s John Quincy Adams Primary School worked as active scientists, looking closely at items from nature such as shells, rocks, fossils and plants. The students observed, labeled and listed the objects, just as a real scientist would. “I loved this unit because it incorporated science, reading and writing,” said Oddo. “The kids were excited to use the magnifying glasses to look closely and describe the features they see.” Said Pizzo, “I enjoyed watching the students use new vocabulary to share their excitement and findings as well as helping one another and comparing their discoveries.”

TROOP TURNS 50 - Recently a birthday party for Deer Park Boy Scout Troop 157 was held

at the Sons of Italy Constantino and Brumidi Lodge in Deer Park. Current and past members and leadership of the troop gathered to share stories and history with each other. The event also served as a reunion of sorts, since many members had not seen each other in years. A great time was had by all, and a special thank you to the Sons of Italy, the Troop’s sponsoring organization, for hosting and helping to make the event a success. Happy 50th Birthday Troop 157!

Silver Award Soccer Camp

This past summer four girls, Julia Bakar, Giovanna Giffone, Madison Gulinello and Megan Oswald, from Troop 1163 in Deer Park held a soccer camp for third graders to earn their Girl Scout Silver Award. This spring, they will complete the project by

creating a slide show demonstrating how to run a soccer camp for others to learn from. Campers were instructed on ways to improve player safety and injury prevention, improve technique and have fun while playing a game they all love.

A big thank you to Deer Park Fire Department for approving the use of Fireman’s Field, to Danny D’Amato, Michael Hofstetter, Ethan Hong and Michael Milankovic for assisting and to the campers and their families for their participation!

HELPING HOMELESS PETS - Recently girls in Troop 1163, from Deer Park, hosted a Pet Care Drive outside DP Shoprite to help with their Silver Award Project. Items collected were brought to local shelters to support their efforts at helping homeless pets find their forever homes. The girls also created a you tube video depicting the steps they took to earn their Silver Awards to show others how to conduct a similar project.
