Working with math lab specialist Marianna Grieco, the students exercised their mathematics skills in completing the Funbooks. The activity not only provided students with beneﬁcial math practice and enabled them to earn prizes, but it also yielded substantial donations for the hospital’s research. “We are proud and happy to help children and their families at St. Jude,” said Grieco, who noted that this was the most money JQA had raised for the hospital to date.

NYS District 8 Knights of Columbus consisting of Our Lady of the Rosary Council in Deer Park, Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal in Wyandanch, Our Lady of Grace in West Babylon, and St. Joseph the Carpenter in Babylon recently held a Day at the Races at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Council in Lindenhurst to benefit the Mercy Inn Soup Kitchen in Wyandanch. The Knights worked hard and raised over $6,000.00 in profit from the race operations and over $4,000 in profit from direct donations. This will give the Soup Kitchen over $10,000 to help them feed the hundreds of needy families in our surrounding communities. Big Bird The largest living bird is the ostrich, which can weigh 330 pounds.

Winter Blahs By: Jamie Lynn Ryan January is probably my least favorite month of all. Apologies to those with birthdays or other milestones that fall within these 31 days, but honestly, it doesn’t seem like anything of any real signiﬁcance happens in January – save for exorbitant snowfall totals, hazardous driving conditions and a general sense of post-holiday “blah-ness.” Am I wrong? Please tell me if I am. I would love nothing more than to ﬁnd some redeeming quality for this last month. Other than the initial excitement of starting off a new year with a completely

blank slate, it’s been one endless procession of taking down Christmas decorations, attempting to pack away said decorations in some sort of orderly fashion and then realizing how very empty all the rooms now look. Of course, throw in a couple of signiﬁcant snowfalls, the digging out that comes with it, one especially tedious fourhour commute home from work – and I’m about ready to hibernate with the groundhog until next spring. That’s quite enough of winter as far as I’m concerned. Perhaps if I was fortunate to sit home and admire the snow from a window until it all melted away… but until then, wake

me when the crocuses sprout. February, while still possessing great blizzard potential, at least brings with it the promise of spring, a progression toward warmth and ﬂower blossoms and longer days… everything that January does not. And there is also, of course, our furry friend the groundhog, that poor little sleep-deprived creature whom we systematically awaken each February 2nd with the hope that his clairvoyance will predict an early spring. Seems sensible enough. And so we bid adieu to January. Goodbye and good riddance, with hopes for only good things come February.
