CADETTES VOLUNTEER - Recently, Deer Park Cadette Troop 1835 volunteered their help at the Robert Frost PFC Auction Night. The girls assisted in the set up for the evening, they served food and beverages to the guests, they handed out rafﬂe prizes as they were won and then assisted with cleaning up after the event. The girls helped reduce costs for the event and therefore aided in raising money for the PFC which sponsors educational and entertainment minded assemblies and events that compliment the NYS Core Curriculum being implemented at Robert Frost. Kicking Into High Gear By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Has anyone else found that the more you have to accomplish in a given period of time, the more efficiently you tend to work? Tasked with a To Do list a mile long, one that would seem insurmountable at first glance, you suddenly kick into another gear entirely, mustering the kind of motivation not seen since the days of cramming for final exams and pulling all-nighters to finish term papers. The problem is complacency. Too easily do we settle into our routines, refusing to waver in our

preconceived notions of how our days should go; how much we are required to accomplish at a minimum, rather than how much we could achieve if only we exercised our full potential. Sad to say, “good enough” is exactly just that for most people – all that they are mentally capable of reaching for. But (and this is good news), see what happens when you take on a little more. Day by day, stretch yourself a bit too thin… and you will surely begin to see just how much time is wasted on a daily basis, and how much more we can accomplish if we only

rise to the occasion. The potential is there; we need only to unlock it. Think back to the days when achievement actually meant something, when everything was a means to an end in order to reach that next level. Why should that mentality change once we “grow up” and settle into adulthood? Representatives from the League of Women Voters recently visited Deer Park High School on an ongoing mission of vital importance – registering new voters. Judie Gorenstein and Brenda Reiss, co-presidents of the LWV of Huntington, have been instrumental in delivering the message of the importance of voting to seniors in Deer Park who will be eligible to vote this coming November. The LWV, a nonpartisan organization whose mission is to encourage and engage citizens into being active and educated participants in government, has helped Deer Park High School register more than 1,000 students over the last four years. According to Gorenstein, the two civicminded volunteers help to register approximately 25 students in each of the government classes they visit at Deer Park, for an average of 100 newly registered young adults per day. Gorenstein began their presentation by providing the students some background on the history of voting rights in America, from the nation’s founding and the Civil War to suffrage and the 26th Amendment in 1971, which affirmed the right to vote of those 18 years and older. She noted that in the 2012 election, only 45 percent of the youngest voters – those aged 1830 – participated in the process. “The last people who got the right to vote, vote the least,” she told the

seniors. “Your vote is your power, and on November 4th, you are going to change the odds and vote.” In a mock election for governor of New York State, facilitated by Reiss, the entire class discussed and debated issues such as marijuana and immigration laws. The activity culminated in two students volunteering to “run” for governor and give speeches on their positions, something designed to encourage these future voters to

examine candidates more closely. “Issues make them focus on where a candidate stands,” explained Reiss. “We want them to realize that their votes count.” “This program gives our students an opportunity to practice democracy firsthand in the classroom,” said Heather Stewart, Deer Park FACS and social studies curriculum associate. “It also encourages our young people to become active citizens through registration.”

Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco recently announced that he has formed a Sheriff’s Office Citizens Advisory Board (SOCAB), which is a first of its kind in Suffolk County. The purpose of the SOCAB will be to collaboratively establish and implement programs that seek to resolve conﬂict, concerns and issues regarding the Sheriff’s Office and the community it serves. The Board will also be tasked with the establishment of sub-committees with the mission to further promote communication and understanding among various constituent groups and the Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff DeMarco called the initiative an important first step in “preserving public trust in county law enforcement,” which has been the subject of intense media scrutiny in the past year. The first meeting will be held in early February and the Board will be tasked with the following responsibilities: • Provide annual reviews to the Sheriff concerning

complaints and testimony from the community related to operations, policies and standard operating procedures of the Sheriff’s Office. • Review and comment on programs to promote, aid and encourage community input. • Review and comment on the development and operation of the Office’s law enforcement activities. • Represent the Sheriff’s Office Citizens Advisory Board at community events. • Establish regular advisory board meetings in various townships throughout the year to enable public comment. Friends By: Bob Sinclair A breathtaking summer sunrise enhanced the silhouette of two couples wandering along a winding path toward a serene and deserted beach. They were captivated by the ocean’s rising tide, as the cascade of rolling waves tenderly rearranged all the sand within their reach. Caressed and warmed by the brilliance of the early morning sun, and the magic of the moment, they steal a breath of time to scratch their names in the inviting, ever-shifting sand. Embracing the tranquility of their surroundings, each couple, moved by the power and timeless majesty of the sea, seems to reach out to one another as their fingers instinctively intertwine, making it difficult to distinguish one hand from the other hand.

Returning at sunset, serenaded by the haunting sounds of the sea, only to discover the ocean had once again somewhat magically shifted the sand, washing away most letters and scrambling the rest into one word that expresses so much more. As the water escaped back into the arms of the sea, the message left behind touched them deeply and became a lasting part of their lives, creating a special bond that never ends. Each couple had scratched their names in the sand separately, and the ocean had mysteriously erased some letters and joined others, forever engraving just one word, whispered by a gentle breeze and echoed by the ocean... Partnerships Make Catholic Education Work

Virtually every Catholic elementary school student goes on to one of Long Island’s elite Catholic high Schools upon graduation, and 99% of those students go on to college. So it should be no surprise that preparing students to excel in that atmosphere is an academic, spiritual and social goal beginning in the elementary schools. That degree of awareness, integration and cooperation is not an accident, however. Did you know that there is an active program to create a Catholic education network from Nursery through higher education? Its goal is to provide students and families with a greater return on their investment in choosing Catholic schools, and its effect is to provide a continuum of Catholic education. The Diocese of Rockville Centre Education Department and the elementary schools are currently working with St John’s University, Fordham University and Molloy College on initiatives to advance Catholic education. St. John’s University announced the establishment of the St. John’s Catholic School Scholarship in November of 2011 that provides any graduate of a Catholic high school a minimum of $10,000 over four years, with a maximum potential scholarship of $20,000, based on financial need. The scholarship will benefit many of our students, will help to strengthen the Catholic school network, and is a strong endorsement by St. John’s University in the value of a Catholic school education. The relationship with St

John’s also helps with two professional development programs for principals and faculty. Through project TIE (Training Innovative Educators), St. John’s has been providing our schools with intensive professional development with a focus on Math and ELA teaching strategies. The second program, CLT (Curriculum Learning Teams), involves meetings at the university and onsite at the schools to work on new curriculum and instructional practices. The Diocese has also worked with Fordham University to develop and educate future Administrators. Teachers in the Diocese who have been chosen to participate in this program receive a Masters degree in Administration. The commitment to excellence displayed by participants in this program assures that the Diocese will have future leaders with the required competencies to lead as

With a functional green screen studio at their disposal, teachers at Deer Park’s May Moore Primary School will be able to expand educational and technological opportunities for students in grades K-2 thanks to a BOCES grant they pursued. The green screen grant had its genesis in a successful 2012 election video project that used basic Flip cameras. It left the educators eager to improve the school’s video capability with a green screen, which layers video images through a process called chroma keying. “We wanted to do a newscast for the entire school and community to see, to introduce new technology, and to help kids with their ELA skills for the Common Core,” explained teacher Sue Steinman. Steinman and five other May Moore teachers – Jennifer Cambria, Jessica Caputo, Tammy Cotrone, Dana Grafstein and Lauren McHugh – submitted a Model Schools Grant application through Western Suffolk BOCES last May, and won. The grant funds were utilized to entirely furnish a professional green screen studio in the May Moore Media Center, facilitated by computer consultant Ellen Robertson. The initiative provides access to this exciting technology to teachers and students for a variety of upcoming projects, including additional newscasts and the school’s READ parent reading program, using the screen in conjunction with laptops and programs such as Google Drive and Photobooth. “In these days, our schools need to keep up with technology,” said Steinman. “Without tools like this, school is not a

cutting-edge place to be.” “We are so proud of this group of innovative teachers for taking the initiative to pursue the Green Screen project grant,” added Principal

Alicia Konecny. “Our students are really enjoying the capabilities of this new technology and we are hopeful for a future Spielberg or Scorsese.”
