More than 800 teenagers from Long Island and metropolitan New York-area schools converged at the Jacob Javits Lecture Center at Stony Brook University on January 3rd for SchoolBusiness Partnerships of Long Island, Inc.’s (SBPLI) kickoff of the Long Island Regional FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition (FRC®) where they learned details of the 2015 robotics game called “RECYCLE RUSHSM.” “FIRST is more than robots. The robots are a vehicle for students to learn important life skills,” said Dean Kamen, president of DEKA Research & Development and FIRST Founder. “Kids often come in not knowing what to expect — of the program nor of themselves. They leave, even after the first season, with a vision, with confidence, and with a sense that they can create their own future.” RECYCLE RUSHSM is a recycling-themed game played by two Alliances of three robots each. Robots score points by stacking totes on scoring platforms, capping those stacks with recycling containers, and properly disposing of pool noodles, representing litter. In keeping with the recycling theme of the game, all game pieces used are reusable or recyclable by teams in their home locations or by FIRST at the end of the season. In addition, SBPLI held a special session for the students’ parents in which they learned about the organization, its mission and the impact of the robotics programs on the students’ lives, both academically and professionally. Ss. Cyril & Methodius is a Catholic elementary school educating children of all faiths from Nursery through 8th grade. Many of our graduates earned scholarships to Catholic High Schools and all were accepted to the high school of their choice.
St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School is proud to announce that it has won a $25,000 award from the Celebrate My Drive Grant program powered by State Farm®. This grant is the result of St. John’s finishing among the top 100 out of 3,283 registered high schools in an online competition in which students, parents, teachers, administrators and community members made commitments to drive safely. The effort was led by the St. John the Baptist S.A.D.D. (Students Against Destructive Decisions) club and was embraced by the entire school community. A portion of the grant money will be used to fund a program that will bring awareness of the dangers of texting while driving to the school community. “This award is a testament to the magnificent school community here at St. John’s,” said Assistant Principal Darius Penikas.
The snooze button. That wonderful option to roll over and drift back to sleep for just a few more minutes, or hours, apparently. Hence, why it is now 5 p.m. on deadline day and I am just beginning to formulate a column. Well, some semblance of one anyway. So what has everyone been doing this winter to keep occupied now that the holiday rush is officially over? Catching up on a little reading, maybe? Some TV series binge watching, perhaps? I, personally, am guilty of both vices, having
made it my mission to complete the entire five volume series of Game of Thrones before the next season premiere, which… well, let’s just say, at nearly 1,000 pages per volume, is looking a bit overly optimistic at the moment. Of course, if I didn’t spend every spare hour binging on old episodes of Gilmore Girls on Netflix, all seven seasons of it, that would probably speed the process along, but… there’s just something about reliving the innocence of my high school and college days whilst living the madness of being an adult. (Speaking of, I don’t think people use terms like “hence”
and “whilst” quite enough, don’t you agree? A column topic for another time.) In any case, winter isn’t so bad if you know how to fill your time. And if vegetating on the couch is the best option, go with it. The long, dark nights, the bonechilling temperatures… all great reasons to curl up with a giant mug of hot chocolate (with extra marshmallows) and a blanket. Just try not to let the hours get away from you, as, before you know it, the birds begin chirping and it’s time to rise and shine and do it all again. Of course, there’s always the snooze button if you need a few extra minutes.

After learning the rules and being shown the playing field, teams received a Kit of Parts made up of motors, batteries, a control system, a PC, and a mix of automation components - and only limited instructions. Working with adult mentors, students have six weeks to design, build, program, and test their robots to meet the season’s engineering challenge. Advancing In Spelling Bee Robert Frost Middle School eighth-grader Rebecca Fox earned victory in the school’s annual spelling bee on January 6th, which served as the qualifying round for the local edition of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Students competed to represent Robert Frost at Hofstra University’s final local edition on February 8th.
The first step in establishing Robert Frost’s single representative for the Hofstra competition took place in students’ language arts classes, where they completed a preliminary spelling assessment of 20 unfamiliar words. The highest preliminary assessment scorers from each grade level were invited to participate in the school wide spelling bee,
with Fox clinching the championship by spelling the word “emporium” correctly. “Our school is very proud of Rebecca and wishes her the best when she competes at Hofstra next month,” said Christina Poppe, Deer Park’s curriculum associate for English language arts, reading and library.

For the fourth year in a row, students at Deer Park’s John Quincy Adams Primary School will participate in a Math-AThon fundraising effort for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, coordinated by math lab specialist Marianna Grieco. St. Jude again supplied Math-A-Thon Funbooks, free curriculum
supplements designed to provide students with challenging math problems. Students seek sponsorship pledges from family and friends, who donate based on how many problems or pages the students solve in the Funbook problems. The proceeds benefit childhood cancer eradication initiatives at the hospital,

Recently, Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center was the recipient of Splashes of Hope therapeutic murals commissioned by local philanthropist and Good Samaritan Benefactor Theresa Patnode Santmann. Splashes of Hope is a non-profit organization
that creates artwork in medical settings as tools for pain management, therapeutic distraction, soothing visualization, and focal points during necessary procedures. The murals are located in the hallway and family waiting room of the open heart surgery unit, in the waiting room of

The ceremony was held on January 11th, at the Captain Bill’s Restaurant, Bay Shore. The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is the uniformed civilian component of the United States Coast Guard. Created by an Act of Congress in 1939, the Auxiliary directly supports the Coast Guard in all missions, except military and direct law enforcement actions.

Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.
The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad
cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the
risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to
be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important
for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

On March 19th at Adelphi University in Garden City, 178 original works of art will be auctioned to benefit the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program. These pieces are “Creative Cups” - ordinary bras that have been turned into folk art. The inspirations for the Creative Cups are many. Artist Richard Vaux of Lloyd Neck evoked autumn with his design “Wishful Landscape II.” Girl Scouts from Troop 3648 in Farmingdale made “Girl Scout Cookies” to honor the memory of Girl Scout Founder Juliet Gordon Lowe, who died from breast cancer. Breast cancer survivor Joan Leondis of Garden City used many jewels for her “Life Is Precious.” The amazing “Bra-alicious” by Dave Jones of East Meadow is made of welded spoons and chains.
