When members of Saints Cyril and Methodius’ Student Council announced their idea to organize a Toy Drive for children who are sick and under the care of the Children’s Unit at St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson, the magnanimous student body of Saints Cyril and Methodius School in Deer Park responded in kind. This school-wide “act of giving” activity encouraged students to really give some thought to those less fortunate or going through difficult

times during this usually joyous time of year, and ﬂexing their compassion muscles in thinking about those in need during the Christmas season. Several bags of collected items included hundreds of unwrapped toys, gifts and games - batteries included! In fact, the “act of giving” ran quite deep, as reports from parents and students clued us in that most of the students gave of their own…meaning that they broke into their own piggy banks and asked Mom and Dad to take them shopping, so the giving

After what seems like months of preparation and primping, stringing lights and garland, strategically hanging ornaments and placing knick-knacks, it’s over. Just like that. As of New Year’s Day, it seems just about everyone is all but done with the Christmas spirit as soon as the ball drops in Times Square. Out goes the tree

to the curb, down comes the décor and back go the unacceptable gifts to the store. ‘Tis the season, indeed. I suppose it wouldn’t be so bad if there was another festive occasion to look forward to, but everything just seems so bare once the holidays have passed. Not to mention the cold, stark winter weather lurking just outside the window… the coziness factor is definitely lacking. And why is it, every year without fail, that nothing ever seems to fit in precisely the way it did

when you unpacked it to begin with? I mean, sure, you may accumulate a new ornament or two here and there, but not to the point of seriously contemplating the option of subletting your kitchen cabinets as additional storage space. Ah, but at least there’s not much else going on this time of year. If there is a time for hibernating and reorganizing, it is surely now. Perhaps a few Christmas tunes and twinkling lights would make this mundane process more festive.

I am also shocked by the idea that my brother is already learning how to drive. I have fond memories of the two of us playing catch on the front lawn. Even though I’m away at college for most of the year, I now feel closer to my brother than ever. The other day, he told me that this year’s high school freshman were born in the year 2000. It’s true, but also a scary idea. I remember being in pre-school in 2000. Now, as an eighteen yearold, I’m finally becoming able to grasp the idea that our whole journey - which we call life - is ﬂeeting, and it is crucial to make the most of it. With 2015 in full swing, I’ve began to fully appreciate how fast life moves. Just months ago, I was still in high school. A new study published at Northwestern University concluded that studying language is, indeed, good for the brain. Bilingual speakers were able to process information more efficiently and easily than those who were monolingual. Connect this news with the well-known fact that children are so well-suited to learning a new language and you have a brain-boosting combination. While the importance of following the guidelines of Common Core is key, administrators at Saints Cyril and Methodius in Deer Park also know the value of rounding out a child’s learning by developing them academically, socially and spiritually. One part of the formula for success includes this study of language, so key at an early age, when children’s minds are the most open to learning the new sounds and inﬂections of a foreign language. SSCM students gain exposure to Spanish and American Sign Language in the 2nd grade, Latin lessons starting with 4th graders excelling in their regular classwork, and by 6th grade, students are reading full-length novels in their new language. Another piece of the puzzle at SSCM is a wise use of technology. Today’s children will be

tasked with continuing the advancement of technology in every field of tomorrow and getting students prepped for life in the technological age includes a lot of fun and learning along the way. With access to iPads and Laptops and involvement with Code.org, doing things like learning facets of programming or “coding” seems like sheer fun to SSCM students of all ages. Sitting here on a bench, the sun shining down on my head As I look around, I begin to use my five senses Touch I’m touching hot wood that is as warm as a cup of tea Sound I hear birds chirping a soft melody while a lawn mower is buzzing far in the distance, making the birds sing louder Sight I’m seeing green all around me, the trees whooshing in the light breeze very faintly The grass sitting, still rooted in the dirt Scent I smell the faint scent of fresh tangy cut grass as the wind blows the smell all around me. Banner Support When Deer Park High School’s Students Against Destructive Decisions Club heard of the October death of Shoreham-Wading River High School football player Tom Cutinella, they began planning a project in support of the latter school. SADD Club members designed a special banner – adorned with student and staff signatures – to honor the memory of Cutinella, for presentation

to Shoreham-Wading River Principal Daniel Holtzman. “Having felt the loss of students in the past at Deer Park, our club members felt that we should show our support to help comfort their students,” said SADD adviser Janet Werner. Shoreham-Wading River’s Wildcats team went on to finish the season as unbeaten Long Island champions.
