The SADD students sang carols, held a holiday trivia contest and interviewed the clients, asking them

what Christmas was like when they were children. “Our students learned the importance of giving back to the community,” said SADD adviser Janet Werner. “They had fun mingling and sharing stories with the seniors. County McCaffrey recently Kevin attended the Eagle Court of Honor for Troop 179’s Bryan John Beard, who hails from North Babylon. The ceremony took place at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in West Islip, and was attended by officials or their representatives from state and local government, scouts of all ages, and the proud family of Bryan. The path that an Eagle Scout candidate must travel is a challenging one to say the least. In addition to earning a slew of merit badges, each candidate must complete a service project as the capstone requirement. The project must be designed to benefit the community, and IVY everything from its LEAGUE planning to execution TUTORS must be orchestrated by the Scout. This is no small task, as projects of this nature more often than not require a variety 6-10 WEEK of material and human PROGRAMS resources. The project involved all kinds of manual labor including, but not limited to, moving furniture, painting walls, and the assembling and installation of shelving units. “Midnight Run” assists the homeless by providing them with food and clothing, and this newly renovated space is surely a welcome contribution to their cause. “Bryan’s service project will play a vital role in assisting some of our society’s most vulnerable individuals,” said McCaffrey. “It is clear that Bryan is a very talented young man with a big heart. The National Junior Honor Society at Deer Park’s Robert Frost Middle School sponsored a toy drive for the holiday season, collecting donations from the student body, faculty and staff.

The toys were then donated to the John Theissen Children’s Foundation, which brings the donated toys to sick and underprivileged children in more than 185 hospitals and childcare

facilities across Long Island throughout the year. “The donations from our students at Robert Frost will help fulfill wishes during this holiday season,” said NJHS adviser Seth Margolin.

Musical Informance In lieu of a traditional holiday performance, students in Laura Valente’s life skills class at Deer Park’s Robert Frost Middle School put on a special “informance” on

December 17th. They shared their favorite music classroom activities with visiting parents, teachers and administrators. Directed by music teacher Sara Watkin

Fox, the students used movement to indicate high and low pitches and interpretive dance to show music in real time.

Caring for Cherubs

Deer Park High School student organizations including the Students Against Destructive Decisions Club, Art Club, Students Against Bullying Club, Gay-Straight Alliance, Patriot Club

and the student council sponsored the school’s 11th annual Adopt-A-Cherub project on December 11th. The caring high school students “adopted” dozens of the community’s youngsters in need and

wrapped their wish list gifts during a festive event held in the school cafeteria. Deer Park social workers then delivered the gifts before the holidays.

College Fair Success

Representatives from 26 colleges and universities across the country recently visited Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) and were impressed with what they saw. More than 100 teen artists met with the reps at this year’s College Fair, making a profoundly positive first impression. “After the event, a number of college representatives called and emailed saying how impressed they were by our students’ talent and professionalism,” explained LIHSA Guidance Counselor Melissa Stencel. “They were equally impressed by how well prepared the students were for the college application process.” Among the colleges represented were Boston University, Penn State, New York University, Wagner College, Montclair State

University, James Madison, Hofstra University, PACE, the Fashion Institute of Technology and several SUNY schools. “Hosting the annual College Fair provides our students with an opportunity to acquaint themselves with the programs of more than 25 colleges, universities and conservatories,” said Jack Lenson, Interim Principal of LIHSA. “This helps students to evaluate their options and make informed decisions about college applications. The Fair also gives college representatives an opportunity to see our students perform and to affirm that our students will make substantial contributions to their programs.” At LIHSA, college prep is serious business and students put a lot of work into it. They

are guided through the process step-by-step by their program directors, guidance counselors and teachers, who help them with everything from college applications and essays, to portfolio reviews and prescreening of performance recordings. Once all the applications have been submitted, the process of individualized scholarship searches begins. “This is a tremendous opportunity for our students,” Ms. Stencel said of the Fair. “They are able to network with colleges on their home turf, allowing the representatives to see where they perfect their craft. It can be overwhelming at first, but our artists rose to the challenge. Student response was fantastic they really impressed the representatives.”
