Once such wishes have been exchanged, many people begin to sing “Auld Lang Syne.” But few know what “Auld Lang Syne” means or why it is sung on New Year’s Eve. Confusion regarding this song is almost as notable as the tradition of singing it. Many people mumble through the lyrics because they never bothered to learn them. “Auld Lang Syne” is a Scottish composition that is well over 200 years old. Written by Robert Burns in the 1700s, the author never intended for the song to become a staple of the holiday season. It was originally a poem that was later put to the tune of a traditional folk

song. The title translates roughly in English as “old long since,” or “long, long ago.” The song pays homage to times gone by and past experiences. The song has been performed at group jamborees, funerals and

Everything Old Is New Again By: Jamie Lynn Ryan So did everyone get what you wanted for Christmas this year? Aside from the pleasure of each other’s company, of course… I asked for a combination DVD/VCR player – one of those retro, bordering-onobsolete creations that I personally feel should be a staple of every household. How else can you view all those old home movies and classic Disney videos? And, in my case, about 20 years’

worth of dance recital recordings… Add to that the fact that, given the option, I would much rather watch a DVD movie rental on a ﬂat screen TV as opposed to my computer monitor. Sure, I realize most people stream media on their laptops nowadays; but I’m not most people, and I would like to have the option of viewing movies on something larger than a smartphone. Hence, my request for this outdated piece of machinery, the gift

that keeps on giving, allowing us the pleasure of reliving those timeless memories on a larger scale. Priceless, if you ask me. So once the winter weather settles in and hibernation starts looking awfully appealing, I plan to fire up the old (new) machine and have myself a minimarathon of movies, TV series I’ve been meaning to catch up on – and of course those classic dance routines. twofold. First, the club holds a fundraiser on the premises of Jefferson’s Ferry, selling items that they have made to residents, employees and visitors. They have, for example sold homemade baked goods, chocolate dipped pretzels and holiday ornaments. With the proceeds, the club then purchases items to donate to a local charity. “The Lots of Love Club is incredibly dedicated and resourceful,” said Jennifer Barrett, director of therapeutic recreation at the Bove Health Center at Jefferson’s Ferry, who works with the group. “They don’t let age or ability stand in the way of contributing to those in need. They raise every dime and spread their generosity around the community.” This month, Lots of Love is selling a uniformclad snowman tree ornament to support Operation Calling Card, which distributes overseas calling cards to members of the military deployed overseas.Operation Calling Card holds particular resonance with the club this year, as they recently lost one of the club’s founders, who was a survivor of Pearl Harbor. Ms. Barrett recently transported the Lots of Love Club to Walmart so that they could purchase baby care products such as diapers and wipes to donate to Riverhead’s Life Touch, which helps single mothers. The club has also donated boxes of food to the St. Gerard food pantry in Port Jefferson, made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for a shelter in Bay Shore, and bought school supplies for Little Flower Children and Family Services. In summary, Ms. Barrett said, “The Lots of Love Club makes the spirit of holiday giving a year round commitment.”

The Key To Keeping Resolutions New Year’s resolutions provide a perfect opportunity to set positive goals for the year to come. Old habits can be hard to break, which can make it difficult for men and women to stay committed to their New Year’s resolutions. But a new year marks a new chapter, and the following are some ways you can ensure this year’s resolutions don’t go unresolved. • Be specific. A resolution that’s too general may ultimately prove ineffective. For example, if

you resolve to lose weight this year, you probably hope to lose a substantial amount of weight over the next 12 months, as opposed to just one or two pounds. If you set specific and periodic goals, such as lose one to two pounds by the end of January, as part of your resolution, then you are building in some measuring sticks along the way, and meeting those measuring sticks can motivate you to stay on course and realize your resolution by year’s end. • Don’t go overboard.

If you traditionally find resolutions hard to live up to, then stick to a single resolution this year. This allows you to focus your efforts more effectively and ensures you won’t be overburdened, which could negatively impact your ability to realize your resolutions. • Use technology. Saving more money is a popular New Year’s resolution, and now men and women looking to save more can employ technology to help them realize their financial goals. If your goal for the

coming year is to save ‘X’ amount of dollars, sit down and calculate how much you need to save each pay period to realize that goal. You can then have that figure automatically deposited into an interestbearing savings account each time your paycheck is deposited into your account. • Enlist a friend. If your New Year’s resolution is one that others can apply to their own lives, then by all means enlist a friend. For example, men and women who want to find

more time to exercise in the coming year can enlist a friend or family member to exercise with them. The buddy system is a great motivating tool, and enlisting the help of a friend or family member provides the added benefit of seeing that loved one more often in the year ahead. • Don’t let setbacks derail your resolution. Resolutions too often fall by the wayside when men and women experience setbacks directly related to their resolutions. If

you resolved to save more money but had a month when that simply was not possible, don’t allow that to derail your resolution for the rest of the year. Setbacks are nearly inevitable, but they’re never an excuse to give up on a resolution. Kind Words Kind words do not cost much. They never blister the tongue or lips.
