The mitten tree at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District has been filling up throughout December. The student council is collecting gloves, hats, scarves and other winter accessories for its annual holiday drive. Donations are being accepted through December 21st and will be

given the YES Community Counseling Center in Massapequa. The items will be available at its outreach center throughout the winter for those in need. Student Council members made ﬂiers that were hung around the school to promote the drive and also wrote a letter to Unqua families. The mitten drive was in

addition to the Student Council’s holiday food collection. Supporting the effort were social worker Toni Lyn Hanzich and student council advisers Leanne Leder and Deanna Musacchia. “The Unqua Elementary School community is always go generous,” Ms. Musacchia said.

Deer Park High School student Lloydine St. Martin recently earned first place at the 16th annual Emerging Leaders Business Competition,

presented by the Huntington Chamber of Commerce at St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue. St. Martin’s impressive victory in the Job Interview category came via her health care skills program at Wilson Tech. The Emerging Leaders competition provides a challenge for talented high schoolers to think beyond the scope of the classroom as well as the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and capabilities in a business environment. St. Martin and hundreds

Rice Krispies are a classic breakfast cereal and chicken is always a dinner favorite. Blend the two and you’ve got a fun and delicious dinner recipe that the whole family will love!

What You Will Need:

Rochelle first learned about this recipe when her children were growing up and she was looking for new ways to engage the whole family in dinner. “A good friend of mine told me about a cereal chicken recipe that was passed down through her family, and she assured me that my kids would love it. She was right! We’ve been making it ever since, and now my daughter makes it for her own family.”

Options for Community Living, Inc. is a local not for profit organization whose mission is to assist individuals and families in need develop their fullest potential for independent living.

Options care coordinators help connect people to health care services and a myriad of resources. Often their clients are homeless or on the brink of homelessness. This is especially difficult when young children are involved. Last year, the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless reported that on a given night in January, 3,937

When their care coordinator Fran first met Linda, she and her daughter had been homeless for over a year and were living in a women’s shelter. Linda had experienced a lot of trauma in her life, the greatest of which was learning that she had contracted the HIV virus following a long-term relationship. Fran provided Linda with some housing resources and when she found an apartment, Fran helped her apply for financial assistance to cover the security deposit. Looking to make a difference this holiday season?

Each week I write this column that I started a little over a year ago, but for this issue I wanted to mention a fundraiser that I started through an oragnization that is very dear to my heart, The Water Project. The Water Project is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that unlocks homan potential by providing reliable water projects to communities in sub-Saharan Africa, which suffer from a lack of access to clean water and proper sanitation. My fundraising goal is $12,000, which if reached will allow this organization to fully fund a water project in a needy community! If I do not reach my fundraising goal, they will take all that I raised and put it towards helping as many people as possible in sub-Saharan Africa. I can not imagine lacking access to clean water and it breaks my heart knowing that is a reality for some people. I can’t sit back and do nothing about this problem. New Year’s Resolutions Work, If You Work Them. Last year, on December 31, 2017, I elected to spend New Year’s Eve quietly at home with my son and one of my brothers, and it was fabulously serene. We cooked a beautiful meal, watched movies, had some heart-to-heart talks and sat together on a big comfy couch to watch the ball drop. That night, as 2017 turned to 2018, I thought about the fact that I hadn’t had my entertainment column since I’d exited an in-house editor position that I worked at from 2005 through 2012. I thought about how much I missed speaking with interesting people and writing their stories. It has always felt like my life’s work. In that moment, I declared to myself that 2018 would be the year that I would bring my column back to life, and this go around, I would own my own intellectual property and be the master of my own fate. I put it out there for the universe to work its magic and let it go. On the morning of January 3, 2018, I sprang out of bed with an inspired idea. I would contact

entertainment editors around the world, introduce myself and my old column, let them know I was looking to begin again and ask if they would like to join my new syndication network. I am not sure what it was, the planets aligning, or perhaps the universe conspiring to make my New Year’s resolution come true, but before I knew it, I had one hundred media outlets across the globe on board. Now, as I approach New Year’s Eve 2018 and New Year’s Day 2019, I look back at what I have accomplished with my entertainment interview column. I am filled with pride that I didn’t just take another aimless trip around the sun this past year. I made every moment count and my New Year’s resolution was accomplished. As you are aware, I have not one, but two columns (of course “Living Well” is the second, and happened most serendipitously). One year ago today, I did not have either. That’s how much a life can change in a year. I don’t state this to brag, but to turn you into a believer, because

I want your New Year’s resolution to happen for you, in spades, in 2019. I want you to look back in December of 2019 feeling on top of the world because you just took the most productive and joyous trip around the sun; greater than you ever thought was within the realm of possibility. We’ve all heard the jokes made about how everyone is going to join a gym and get into the best shape of their life or finally sit down at the computer to write that novel. I get it. But frankly, what does that have to do with you? So some people don’t follow through. Be the person who does. Whether or not you cross more amazing things off your bucket list in 2019 or put your dreams in the “coulda-woulda-shoulda” pile is in nobody else’s hands but your own. It could be something leisure related. Perhaps you have been meaning to take an art class or a course at your local college. Maybe you want to learn to cook. There are no small goals; no small desires. On December 31st, declare it so, and make it so.

Options was formed in 1982 to respond to the need for supportive housing for people with serious mental illness. The Mental Health Residential Program grew rapidly, and in 1994 Options introduced case management services to Long Islanders living with HIV/AIDS. Soon after, a housing program for this population was started as well. More recently, Options has partnered with Long Island Health Homes to offer care coordination services to high need Medicaid users with chronic illnesses through the Access to Care Program. As of today, Options serves more than 1,800 adults and children annually through its programs and manages over 180 scattered housing sites across Nassau and Suffolk counties!

Demonstrating both remarkable artistic talent and equally remarkable compassion, six students in Deer Park High School’s AP studio art class – joined by art teacher Derek Mainhart – recently participated in the Memory Project, designed to bring awareness to the plight of Rohingya children of Myanmar. Since 2016, the

ongoing crisis in Myanmar’s Rakhine State has centered on conﬂict between the majority Rakhine community and the ethnic minority Rohingya people, culminating in military crackdowns and the ﬂight of close to a million Rohingya to a refugee settlement in neighboring Bangladesh. The Rohingya have been called the “most

unwanted” group of people on Earth, and the Memory Project seeks to show the children that they are not “unwanted.” Once they had signed on to the project, Mainhart and students Samantha Coccaro, Diana Damian, Joshua Murphy, James Rella, James Valencia and Josilyn VanWart were matched with seven Rohingya children from Rakhine State, and sent

color prints of photos of the children. The Deer Park artists used the photos as references in creating realistic portraits of each Rohingya child in various 2D art

Deer Park Memory Project media, working hard to capture the essence and dimensions of each face. The portraits will be sent to the Memory Project in January, providing a heartwarming

gift of artistic empathy to the Rohingya children, who have rarely seen photographs of themselves, much less a work of art representing them.
