Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple. In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

While not everyone can venture to New York City’s famed Times Square to watch the ball drop in person, millions tune in around the world to watch it on television. Original celebrations in New York centered around listening to the bells of Trinity Church ring at midnight, but the New Year’s Eve celebrations were later moved to the New York Times building in 1904. Fireworks were part of those celebrations, but hot ash and sparks falling on spectators led to a ban on fireworks, and event organizers needed another spectacle to draw crowds, according to PBS. New Year’s celebrations can be traced back thousands of years to ancient Babylon. And as with many holidays with deep histories, traditions are the hallmark of many New Year’s celebrations. While many people perform these traditions by rote, it can be interesting to delve into the history behind various components of New Year’s celebrations. Toasting the new year with a sparkling wine can be traced back to French champagne producers. Champagne, a sparkling wine from a specific region of France, was used in the baptism of the Frankish warrior Clovis, according to the Champagne Committee of France. Soon, champagne became a key part of religious events, coronations and soirees - as well as secular rituals that replaced formerly religious rituals, according to the book “When Champagne Became French” by Kolleen Guy. Champagne manufacturers eventually linked the bubbly to festive occasions with family, and New Year’s celebrations became another ideal time to pop the cork on a bottle.

Acceptance into either honor society requires an overall grade point average of 85 or higher, and a contentspecific GPA in either math or science of 90 or higher. The school’s women’s choir performed the national anthem and pledge of allegiance at the event, held in the school’s auditorium. Speakers included Curriculum Associate for Science and

National Honor Society It was a moving moment on the rainy night of Dec. 9 as 79 meritorious Deer Park High School students were inducted into the school’s National Honor Society in front of a proud audience of family and friends. Zubaer Mohiuddin, the Class of 2020 salutatorian, led the auditorium in the pledge of allegiance, followed by speeches by NHS adviser Seth Margolin, Principal Charles Cobb, ELA Curriculum Associate Justin Uliano and Suffolk County Legislator Susan Berland. “I’ve known this group of kids since they were seventh graders at Robert Frost Middle School, and I am very proud of the young adults they have become,” said Margolin. “Thank you to their parents for all of their support and guidance over the years.” “I am proud of each one
of you for being here today,” Cobb told the inductees. “Thank you for embracing and embodying the four pillars of NHS’s foundation. Your unwavering character, commitment to scholarship, dedication to service and development of leadership are all inspiring and critically important for who you are and who we are. In countless ways, you have impacted our climate and culture here at Deer Park High School. You are passionate, thoughtful, motivated and making it matter wherever you go. From the example you set by virtue of your character to the contributions you make to the learning environment due to your scholarship, to the lives you touch as part of your service, to the followers you guide due to your leadership, you are role models, change agents in the essence of what it

Don’t Pack This Pest (NAPSI)—If you’re moving to a new home this year, watch out for certain stowaways: gypsy moths. These insects are among the most destructive pests of trees and shrubs in America. Gorging themselves on leaves, gypsy moth caterpillars weaken and can kill more than 300 different species of trees. Since 1970, they’ve defoliated more than 75 million acres. The Answer That’s why the U.S.
Department of Agriculture requires homeowners by law to inspect and remove gypsy moth egg masses from household goods prior to moving across state lines—and get an official certificate of inspection. What You Need To Do • Check all outdoor household goods— lawn furniture, grills, outdoor toys, camping equipment—for egg masses. • Use a putty knife, stiff
brush or similar hand tool to dispose of any egg masses you do find into a container of hot, soapy water, or place them in a plastic bag, seal it, and set it in the sun. To get the certificate, you can perform a selfinspection or hire a state-certified pesticide applicator. The American Moving and Storage Association says you should then give the inspection certificate to your moving van driver.
