Celebrating Culture More than 100 students from Deer Park’s Robert Frost Middle School attended the annual Heritage and Culture Night on November 3rd, organized by Frost’s world language teachers Keri Cook, Kimberly Lecamus, Jack Lovascio, Fran Pullman and Meredith Telese. During the celebration, students tasted a variety of multicultural food and danced to Spanish, Italian, French and Irish music, forming a massive conga line. “It was a wonderful night and genuinely encouraged an appreciation and tolerance for the multitude of diverse cultures within Deer Park’s community,” said Ashley Rosenberg, district administrator of ENL and world languages.

HARMONY CAFÉ!
Harmony Café is one of more than 60 community cafés in America and abroad with a mission to reduce food insecurity by serving healthy, affordable and delicious meals to all who walk through their door. They are a proud member of and are based off the established nonprofit restaurant business model developed by the One World Everyone Eats Foundation. Their philosophy is that everyone, regardless of economic status, deserves the chance to eat healthy food while being treated with dignity. When one enters the Harmony Café, there is a suggested donation of $10 to dine and enjoy the entertainment provided. Guests can pay the suggested donation, pay less, pay more to pay it forward, pay nothing, or opt to volunteer at the Café in exchange for a fresh meal - the option of earning a meal without being plagued by the stigma of a handout. I recently met with Rosemarie McCarthy, Director and Founder of Long Island’s first community café, Harmony Café. She stressed the importance of not only feeding one’s stomach, but feeding their soul as well. At Harmony Café, each meal is offered over 2 ½ hours and is always accompanied with live music. Rosemarie mentioned that, “There is a great need to have social connections; it is essential to one’s overall health and well-being.” Therefore, she spotlights the importance of engaging in conversation with one another at her events. The business model for these types of cafés isn’t one that is easy to get off the ground; therefore, as of now, Harmony
Café only offers one 2 ½ hour event - a fresh meal and entertainment - on the second Wednesday of each month. Harmony Café currently operates out of the VFW Hall at 32 Edwards Street in Patchogue; but with a heart full of passion and the energy of a lion, Rosemarie has a goal for Harmony Café to have a storefront in the Patchogue area that will be open five days a week for lunch and dinner. The following volunteer positions are needed: event planning committee volunteers; a volunteer coordinator assistant; servers and kitchen help volunteers; community advocate/ outreach volunteers; and, most importantly, she needs volunteers to help fundraise, and volunteer board members (passionate people who can give a minimum of 10 hours a month to help plan ahead and discuss the organization’s needs and wants). Rosemarie mentioned that she values passion over experience in these areas because experience can always be gained! Sponsors are needed to help support the mission of Harmony Café by helping to fund each event and, in return, they will have their business promoted by the Café. Says Reyna Machado, assistant director of the Adelphi Program, “This additional funding from the Plastic Surgery Foundation will allow us to enhance the dialogue between the social workers and patients about breast reconstruction, as this is an option and right that many women are not aware of, specifically underserved populations.” Federal law signed in 1998 requires health group insurance plans to cover breast reconstruction and New York State requires healthcare professionals to discuss reconstruction with patients prior to cancer removing surgery. Bilingual social workers address barriers that interfere with the continuity of treatment including transportation, food, legal services and financial needs. Efforts are made to connect patients

Spirit of the Season Once a Bulldog, Always a Bulldog… so the slogan goes, stamped on every piece of Lindenhurst paraphernalia this side of Wellwood Avenue, and beyond. And it’s true. I have not been a student of the Lindenhurst school district since 2000; but, come every Homecoming, I am there - along the parade route, in the stands, on the sidelines - snapping pictures for this very paper and cheering on the home team with the rest of the crowd, many of them fellow alumni. And last weekend, I was among the thousands who tuned in to watch the Lindy Bulldogs defeat the Oceanside Sailors in the Long Island Tournament - Division I Final, following their perfect 12-0 season. What a proud moment it was, to see this team go all the way for the very first time in their storied history, supported by their throng of loyal fans.

And later that night, as the team buses returned to the streets of Lindy, they were met by hundreds of proud community members lining the route, stretching from town hall all the way to the high school. What a wonderful sight to behold, to witness an entire town rally behind a team, an organization, a common cause. I imagine many towns across Long Island have experienced this at one time or another; it is this type of camaraderie which forges a connection that cannot be broken. Years later, residents will remember moments like these, and pass them along to their children and grandchildren. Perhaps this particular occasion was made all the more special coming as it did at the start of the holiday season, providing an added element to an already-festive atmosphere. What began

as a mere dream back in September turned into victory parades through town and more recognition than any individual could have ever hoped to receive. Even still, it remains a team victory; no man above the rest, all united in their Lindy Pride. Browsing through some of the many videos shared on social media following the victory, I came across one that appeared to be posted immediately following, taken during the post-game meeting of coaches and players. As the head coach praised the outstanding accomplishments of the season, he made sure to mention the town, the people, the community they all called home - without them, he said, none of this would have been possible. And that, in the end, is the most humbling achievement of all. Seventeen years later, I remain a proud Bulldog. Always.

Kennedy Intermediate School were chosen to participate in the ninth annual Suffolk County Music Educators Association’s PEAK Festival, held at Northport High School.
PEAK (which stands for Parents, Educators and Kids) celebrates elementary classroom music and provides a unique experience where parents, educators and students can participate together. Talented fourthgrade students learn and experience music in addition to performing it, attending morning workshops in areas of music that may be new or different, including

First graders at Saints Cyril and Methodius School in Deer Park managed to fit in plenty of work and play in the short Thanksgiving week. They participated in
a video conference on what it was like for the Pilgrims to sail to America on the Mayflower. It gave the students insight into what life was like in Plymouth
and what skills they needed in order to survive. The class found it both interesting and informative and they rounded out their learning with some related
hands-on activity, making beaded bracelet the way Native American Indians would have long ago. SSCM held its annual Thanksgiving Feast for the students, and Mrs. McGerald’s first grade class was on the ready with a little added treat of their own, as they spent the morning working on Thanksgiving turkey cookies, complete with candy corn feathers! That afternoon, the students turned their attention to other animals, as the class science topic of the week centered around amphibians, reptiles and fish!
From reading to math to nature to cookie-crafting, the students enjoyed a very full week, indeed! Their next big venture will be continuing preparations for the annual pre-Christmas school Mass that the first grade presents each year.
They’ve been practicing their readings and songs and will be ready to roll in time for their Mass on December 19th. On behalf of SSCM, we hope you all had a Happy and Healthy Thanksgiving!

Stellar Student
Kasey Dorney, a student at Deer Park High School, will be attending Wagner college next year as a student athlete for the Division I university,
where she will be majoring in nursing and playing lacrosse. Kasey began playing high school varsity lacrosse in 8th grade. She won the “Unsung Hero” award two years in a row, and was named All League for LI lacrosse. Kasey was also the captain of of the lacrosse team last year and this year. Additionally, Kasey played varsity soccer, where she was also captain this past year. The varsity team made it to the final four last year for the school’s first time. Kasey
was named All County the last two years for LI soccer and was named one of LI’s top 50 female soccer players. Kasey also ran varsity track, where she took first place in a 300-meter 4x2 relay in Suffolk County Community College Heat. She also played varsity basketball in her sophomore, and now senior year. Academically gifted as well, Kasey was honored by the LI Breakfast of Champions for high school. She is a member of the National Honor
Society, has been a scholar athlete for all four years with a 90+ average with AP classes, received the Coach Award for track and is a part of the DECA club and the Varsity Leaders club.
