The Charity of the Month for December is: John Theissen Children’s Foundation www.jtcf.org
John Theissen Children’s Foundation began after their Executive Director & Founder, John Theissen, had stayed at Schneider’s Children’s Hospital in New Hyde Park when he was 17 years old. John needed to have brain surgery for a brain tumor that he unfortunately developed. The day he walked into the hospital he met a 7 year old girl named Tasha. She spent many hours with John for the next few days, always trying to make him happy. Tasha received very little family support, however she expected her family to attend a holiday party that was sponsored by the hospital staff. Unfortunately they did not attend. John was too ill to take her, so his family did. When Santa asked her what she had wanted she replied, “I would like a teddy bear for my friend upstairs.” John felt fortunate to be that friend. Tasha’s positive attitude and generous spirit inspired John. Once he got out of the hospital he wanted to help children just like her. In 1992, John held a toy drive during the holiday season to benefit children in local hospitals. During this first drive, he collected over 800 new toys in just 2 weeks! That was

Holiday Season Helping Sick & Underprivileged Children! the beginning of what has become the year round organization, John Theissen Children’s Foundation. Since 1992, this organization has collected over 1 million new toys and have donated them to sick and underpriviledged children in over 180 hospitals and child-care facilities. However, this Foundation does more than just collect and distribute toys. They also provide hospitals and childcare facilities with therapeutic and recreational equipment, support families with financial assistance to defray medical expenses, fulfill patient’s wishlists throughout the year (for those 18 years of age and younger) and they assist sick and underpriviledged children in other ways that are needed. On December 5th at 6:30PM, John Theissen Children’s Foundation will be hosting A Night of Champions Holiday Gala! This Gala will feature one of New York’s biggest and best live auctions, great raffles, door prizes, gourmet dishes provided by 2nd Street Gourmet, desserts provided by Francesco’s Bakery and a VIP Lounge Meet & Greet with celebrity professional athletes. Admission is $50 and VIP admission is $350. To purchase a ticket, please visit

Three Deer Park High School seniors – Malik Edmead, Samantha Giroux and Alexa Skoubas – signed national letters to continue their athletic careers in college next fall. The three students were recognized in a Nov. 20 ceremony in the high school library, attended by proud friends and family members, Athletic Director Dominick Fontana and Principal Charles Cobb. Edmead, a point guard for the Falcons, will play basketball for Merrimack College in North Andover, Massachusetts. His major is undecided. During his Deer Park tenure, Edmead received All-County and
All-Long Island honors, and was named his team’s MVP. “Merrimack was the best fit for me,” Edmead said. Giroux signed to play lacrosse for Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Virginia, where she plans to major in physical therapy. A three-year team captain, she earned All-League and All-Division recognition in her freshman and sophomore years and was named Suffolk County Rookie of the Year while still in eighth grade. “Virginia Tech has great academics, a beautiful campus, a great lacrosse

program with a great coaching staff, and big school spirit,” Giroux said of her choice. “It felt like a home away from home.” Skoubas will attend Iona College in New Rochelle, where she will study premed. Her high school lacrosse honors include All-Division, All-County Honorable Mention, Sportsmanship Award and team MVP. “When I was at Iona, the coaches and girls made me feel right at home,” Skoubas said. “Also, being only an hour away from home will allow my family to come and support me at all of my games.”

Zarate Elected Chair Of The Suffolk County Hispanic Advisory Board Deer Park resident and educator Priscilla Zarate has been elected chair of the Suffolk County Hispanic Advisory Board. Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Huntington Station) appointed her to the board as his representative in 2018. The Hispanic Advisory Board was established by resolution in 2005 to confer on issues of importance and relevance to the Hispanic community and to make recommendations to the Suffolk County Legislature and County Executive. Volunteers serving on the 15-member board work to improve cultural understanding between the Hispanic Community, Suffolk
County Government, and Suffolk County residents; promote Hispanic business development; and encourage civic participation at all levels by members of the Hispanic Community. NYS-licensed A teacher, Ms. Zarate has professional certifications in administration, supervising, bi-lingual education and Spanish instruction and is currently the Coordinator of English as a New Language (ENL) and World Languages (K-12) for the Islip School District. She was recently elected by The New York State Association of Bilingual Education (NYSABE) as Delegate for Region 1/ Long Island. NYSABE is a
professional organization that represents educators, parents, members of community-based organizations, private agencies, and institutions of higher education as well as advocates involved in the education of English language learners/ bilingual students in New York State. Additionally, Ms. Zarate is a leadership team member for AFFIRM (Advocating for Fair/Full Inclusive Resources for Multilingual Learners Coalition). The coalition includes members of the top NYS advocates such as Hispanic Federation, United Federation of Teachers, NYS TESOL, International Networks for Public
Schools, NY Immigration Coalition, NYS Advocates for Children, NYC Commission of Human Rights, and others, who come together to identify federal funding needs for New York State Public schools’ English Language Learners / Multilingual Learners. Ms. Zarate has been a committee member and program coordinator for the Town of Babylon Hispanic Heritage Festival, and was recognized by the Town as a “Hispanic Leader Serving and Guiding Our Nation with Pride and Honor.” “Throughout her lifetime, including 23 years as an educator, Priscilla Zarate has been a strong
