Ride For Life Donation The Ride for Life Organization, which raises funds and awareness for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, has earmarked $160,000 for Stony Brook University in 2014 to support ALS research and clinical care. A portion of these funds ($100,000) will be the latest installment from the Ride for Life to support the development of ALS clinical trials at the Stony Brook Neurosciences Institute.

The pledge is in conjunction with the match from the Simons Foundation Challenge Grant. The $60,000 slated for clinical care services at Stony Brook’s Christopher Pendergast ALS Center of Excellence, an ALS Association Certified Center providing comprehensive diagnosis and treatment for patients, will come directly from the ALS Association but is based on funds available from the Ride for Life.
“Without the cooperation and support of the Stony Brook University community, the Ride for Life would not have achieved our unbelievable level of success,” said Christopher Pendergast, a 21-year ALS patient and advocate, and Founder and President of the Ride for Life. “The ALS community is grateful for what Stony Brook University has helped us achieve.” Since its inception in 1998, the Ride for Life
has provided more than $1.7 million in funds for ALS research and $1.1 million to support ALS clinical care and patient services nationwide. During this period, more than $700,000 has been donated to Stony Brook University for the Christopher Pendergast ALS Center of Excellence and Stony Brook neuroscience research in search of a cure for this fatal neurodegenerative disease. The Ride for Life has slated $500,000 for

Funds for the organization’s “Care for Life” program, which provides a one-time grant to support home respite care, will be increased per individual patient recipient. The Ride for Life will also continue its support of Long Island high school seniors who have a family member affected by ALS with its college scholarship program. Some 40 high school students have received scholarships over the past six years. Next year $6,000 in scholarships will be announced sometime in February. Most of the funds generated by the Ride for Life organization can be attributed to the annual Ride for Life event that occurs during ALS Awareness Month each May. The 2014 event begins on May 5. Prior to that, the Ride for Life will hold its Bike Trek, a multilength bicycle fundraiser that courses through the Stony Brook University Campus on April 27th.

Stony Brook research and clinical trials spread over a five-year period, ending in 2017, which is matched by the Simons Foundation, providing a total impact of $1 million for the effort. Pendergast emphasized that an ongoing focus of the organization is to support research that can lead to clinical trials of new treatments against ALS that improve upon current treatments, slow down the disease process or cure ALS. “Neuroscience is getting ever closer to the goal of finding new approaches to treating ALS and other devastating neurodegenerative diseases,” said Dennis Choi, MD, PhD, Professor and Chair, Department of Neurology and Director of the Neurosciences Institute. “With Stony Brook’s expertise in neuroscience research, we hope to contribute importantly to this global effort.” In 2014, the Ride for Life will provide additional funds to other organizations in the region, expanding services such as home nursing care and handicapped

Accompanied by their proud parents, 18 outstanding Deer Park High School students were recently recognized for their achievements, hard work and determination to overcome obstacles at the Breakfast of Champions, a biannual event held in the school’s library. “The Breakfast of Champions is an opportunity for teachers and administrators to honor students who have impacted them in some way,” explained Jeanne Kozlowsky, the school’s associate principal of
curriculum, instruction and assessment. “It’s always an event we look forward to.” Students are selected as champions for each of the 15 departments at the high school, as well as two champions selected by principals and one by a teacher. For the Fall 2013 edition of the Breakfast of Champions, the honorees receiving plaques were Anthony Baculima Lopez by the ESL department, Nicholas Falco (family and consumer science), Theresa Grimaldi (health), Samantha Guttadauria
(art), John Johnson (technology), Ali Karimi (English language arts), Joshua Larcom (guidance), Hope Mahon (physical education) Jacie Matera (business), Jaclyn Miano (performing arts), Malique Papailler (world languages), Johnny Rock (math), Domenico Russo (social studies), Tiffany Sawicki (science) and Kristy Vitucci (athletics). Additionally, the Principal’s Award was presented to Kiani Marcellus, the Associate Principal’s Award was given to Jordan Lazarich, and Blair Murray
was honored with the Teacher’s Choice Award. Each teacher or administrator who nominated a champion spoke about their selected student. Fashion For Awareness Two fashion design students at Deer Park High School decided to honor October as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month by creating a unique tribute and work of art. Supported by Rita Murphy, their fashion design teacher, Alex Posillico and Ada Ramirez made a special breast cancer dress using only a mannequin and pink paper ribbons provided by the school’s SADD club. “We wanted people to be aware of breast cancer
issues,” said SADD adviser Janet Werner-Kempski, “and to know that you can have breast cancer and still be beautiful.” When inspiration struck the two seniors, they forged ahead without a definite plan and despite never having attempted a similar project. “It just happened as we went along,” said Ramirez, who explained that the dress took two-and-a-half school periods to complete. “I was very glad to be a volunteer and have the experience of
doing something for breast cancer,” she added. Both students were recognized for their artistic achievement at the November Board of Education meeting. Superintendent of Schools Eva Demyen said, “They did an outstanding job – what creativity!” Posillico and Ramirez both plan to study fashion design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City next year.

Into The Black By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Black Friday. As I sit here writing my column from home at 11:15 p.m. on Thanksgiving night, my alarm clock is set for 5 a.m. tomorrow morning. Why, you ask, would I subject myself to the madness that has become a tradition for thousands of manic shoppers desperately scouring stores for the best bargains? Because it’s fun. Although, I will admit, I wasn’t sold on the idea until recently. Prior to my first Black Friday shopping experience, I was one who would wait until the week of Christmas to even begin, occasionally
even making a last-minute mall run on Christmas Eve. No list, no direction – just aimless wandering until the “perfect” gift caught my eye. I hated shopping and everything that came with it – the crowds, the long lines, the even longer return/ exchange lines… all of it. Well, the lack of preparation remains the same. Still no list, no real ideas to speak of… but I have developed a bit more tolerance for the shopping end of things. Perhaps now that I am older and have more means to show my appreciation to those I love, I see the value in putting a bit more effort into things.
Not that you will ever catch me in a store on Thanksgiving itself. The holiday is exactly that – a holiday – and should be celebrated and savored as such. Plenty of time to shop in the month following; beginning on Black Friday just seems to add a little extra excitement to the process. Call me crazy. Call me a convert to the madness. Whatever. And with that, I had better get some sleep. I have a long day of shopping ahead of me tomorrow. Enjoy your Thanksgiving leftovers, make your list, check it twice – and maybe I’ll see you on line at the store.
