How to Make Use of a Jacket “Don’t seek, don’t search, don’t ask, don’t knock, don’t demand... relax. If you relax, it comes. If you relax, it is there. If you relax, you start vibrating with it.” - Osho Much of our suffering comes from our unwillingness to relinquish control. Everything from large sweeping intersections in our lives to the smallest details that plague us daily when they don’t go our way; we often operate under the faulty belief that we can use force, manipulation, or anger to bend the universe to our will. Coming up to New York after living in Florida, my nine year old son grew accustomed to living his life in t-shirts and shorts, unencumbered by the heavy winter gear that New Yorkers wear. As the weather has grown colder, he has been resistant to wearing his jacket, hat and gloves; instead insisting on layering t-shirts and sweatshirts. For weeks now, our morning routine has included me begging, pleading, warning him about getting sick, threatening to take away various priviliges, and at

times, shouting in exasperation. “JUST PUT YOUR JACKET ON!” In reality, the thought of him getting sick, or even what the bus driver or teacher would think of me were my motivating factors for my panic. It was my own discomfort about the situation. What I’ve realized is, ultimately, I don’t have control. My job as his parent is to empower him with love, values, ideas, compassion, and the information he needs to make the right decisions for himself. All I can do is sit back and allow him to experience the world. This morning, as we were waiting together for the school bus to arrive, I observed that my son’s hat and gloves were inside his backpack; his winter jacket slung over his arm. None of these items were actually on his body. I said, “Uh... you know, carrying a hat and gloves, and holding your winter jacket won’t keep you warm. They only work if you wear them.” He replied, “I know that.” I nodded my head in mutual understanding and said, “Okay, good. I just want to be sure that

you’re aware of how the whole process works.” He stared at me and let out a sheepish giggle. Slowly, he reached inside his backpack for his hat and placed the hat on his head for warmth. Then, as if to say, “I’m not doing this because you want me to. It’s my decision,” he slung his arms through his jacket. As a singular stance of independence, he skipped the gloves. I was okay with that. The allowing and the space of freedom it created caused my son to put on his hat and jacket. It was more effective than the begging, the pleading, the vague threats of catching a cold. In life, the more we try to control others or our circumstances and surroundings, the more our desired outcome eludes us. Be in a state of allowing. Just as you would allow the water from a babbling brook to seamlessly run through your fingers rather than trying to clench and trap the water in your hands, allow things to simply be as they are, and watch as your suffering diminishes.

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) recently joined Babylon Town Officials and other dignitaries in honoring the commitment and ultimate sacrifice of Suffolk County Police Department First Precinct officers at the dedication and unveiling of a Police Memorial Monument in Lindenhurst. Spearheaded by Town of Babylon Councilman Terry McSweeney, the monument honors Suffolk

County Police Department officers who served residents in the Town of Babylon and lost their lives in the line of duty during their service. First Precinct Commanding Officer Inspector Kevin Kane, other police officers and representatives from the First Precinct, County and local officials and members of the public attended the unveiling on October 26th. The Book Fairies, located in Freeport, NY, is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that accepts donations of new and gently used books and connects them with organizations throughout all five boroughs and Long Island that do not have the funds to foster the love of reading. Some of those organizations are hospitals, schools, veteran organizations and soup kitchens. Reading materials can not only foster literacy and academic success, but they can also provide a respite from personal struggles and nature a love of reading across age groups. Every book that they collect goes through sorting, their process of thoroughly examining the type of book and condition it’s in. With only 2 staff members, The Book Fairies heavily relies on the work of selfless volunteers. The Book Fairies does more than just impact their local community; they are also dedicated to supporting literacy programs in underdeveloped nations around the world. Some of the books they receive that are in fair to average condition are packaged for partnering organizations to be shipped overseas! Since the program’s inception, they have helped build libraries in Africa, India, China, South America and the Caribbean Islands!

If you would like to get involved with The Book Fairies, you can! They are in need of sorting volunteers to come to their Freeport location on one of their sorting days (Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday) and help sort through all their current book donations. If you are 13 or older you can come alone and if you are younger than 13 you will need a guardian to accompany you. If you’re interested in volunteering as a sorter, there is no need to reserve your space. Simply show up at their Freeport location (70 North Main St. - Back Entrance) on one of their sorting days between 10AM and 3PM! Suffolk Cyber Sleuths Rank in National Competition Thirteen Suffolk County Community College cyber sleuths from the Cybersecurity Club competed and ranked in the fall season of the National Cyber League (NCL) competition, in which students are challenged to use concepts and skills learned in the classroom in a virtual realworld scenario. Anthony Lippman (Miller Place) led the team with an

overall ranking of 96th out of 4,729 participants and 85th of 506 in the Gold Bracket consisting of the top 15 percent of ranked participants. Christopher Renzine (Medford) finished with a ranking of 61st of 1684 participants in the Bronze Bracket composed of novice participants. Anthony, Chris and Anthony Rolan (Brentwood), Nolan

Smith (E. Patchouge) and Allyn Mowbry (Patchouge) competed in the NCL Postseason competition and finished 73rd out of 368 teams and were included on the list of top performers. The NCL is a defensive and offensive puzzle-based, capture-the-flag style cybersecurity competition that helps students prepare and test themselves against cybersecurity challenges

they will likely face when in the workforce. All participants play the games simultaneously during preseason, regular season and postseason. Anthony and Christopher began training for the for the preseason competition in October. The team will next compete at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) Cyberforce Competition on December 1st.

Competing in the BNL competition will be: Anthony Lippman (Miller Place), Chris Renzine (Medford), Nolan Smith (E. Patchouge), Melissa Fisk (Deer Park) and Jonathan Delia (Lindenhurst). Suffolk County Community College offers The Cybersecurity and Information Assurance Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree program that prepares

students for entry-level careers in the cybersecurity industry. Cybercrime has been designated a high priority by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and has increased the need for trained professionals to safeguard personal information, follow electronic trails, and stymie and apprehend cyber criminals.
