The Charity of the Month for November is: Long Island Cares www.licares.org

Long Island Cares is one of the region’s most comprehensive hunger assistance organizations, which serves thousands of individuals and families in need. They provide food when and where it is needed, sponsor programs that promote self-sufficiency and they educate the public about the causes and consequences of hunger on Long Island. So who faces hunger on Long Island? More often than not, it is people who are just like you. Fewer than 5% of the individuals served by Long Island Cares and other organizations fighting poverty and hunger in our community are actually homeless. According to the national study, Hunger in America, here are some staggering statistics that will allow you to better understand the need for organizations like Long Island Cares on our island.

There are approximately 283,700 people on Long Island that receive emergency food every single year. That equates to 64,900 people every week. 39% of Long Islanders who receive emergency food are children under the age of 18. While children are among the largest single population of hungry, they have virtually no voice; their needs are easily dismissed and overlooked and they must rely on others to access the feeding programs and services they need. Additionally, children who are hungry are more likely than their peers to experience behavioral issues, reduced ability to learn social skills and impaired cognitive learning, even permanent brain damage. Lastly, I think it is important to mention that Food Banks are by far the single most important source of food for agencies with emergency food providers, accounting for 69% of the food distributed by pantries, 39% distributed by kitchens and 45% by shelters.

In honor of Veterans Day, which recently passed, below is a heartfelt story of how Long Island Cares helped a female veteran. Michelle is a 28 year old veteran of service in the Middle East. As she ended her service, she found integration back into civilian life difficult. Through Long Island Cares, Michelle has been able to access food and support services and comes to their Military Appreciation Tuesdays regularly. Visiting their pantry weekly, she receives food for herself and for her puppy, which eases her financial concerns as she navigates applying for SNAP and other benefits. So how can you get involved with this organization to help those in need? There are many ways! You can volunteer with the organization, even if it is just for a few hours, to help make a difference in the lives of others. Volunteers can participate in the following areas: Warehouse Sorting & Repacking (lifting is required), Clerical Tasks, Mobile Pantry, Food Pantries, Special Events, Food Drives or their Student Volunteer Corps. Please email licvolunteer@licares.org for more information. Additionally, food donations are always welcome. Food donations to Long Island Cares is one of the simplest ways you can make a difference in the lives of your neighbors. You can drop off your food donation at one of their ongoing or upcoming food drives or a Long Island Cares food pantry on weekdays from 8:30AM-4:00PM. Deer Park FD Annual Holiday Parade On Saturday, December 7, 2019 at 6:00 pm, the Deer Park Fire Department will be celebrating its Annual Holiday Parade. The parade will start at the Deer Park High School and proceed down Deer Park A venue south to the Deer Park Firehouse on Lake A venue. Suffolk County Community College’s Men’s and Women’s Cross Country teams are NJCAA Region XV Division III champions -- the men’s fifth year running as champions and the women’s second consecutive championship. Suffolk Men’s Luis Fernandez took first place in the championship race as did women’s team member Alexandra Smith. Head Coach Matt French was named both the men’s and women’s Coach of the Year, the eighth time he has been awarded the prestigious title. “Both teams put a lot of pride out there on the course,” French said. “Knowing that we had won last year, they wanted to measure up and they did.” The women’s team topped Fashion Institute of Technology

Alzheimer’s Walk In The Park Hundreds walked to support the fight against Alzheimer’s and raise funds for the 50,000 Long Islanders living with the disease at the second annual “Alzheimer’s Walk in the Park” hosted by the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) and the Town of Babylon. The walk took place at the AFA-Town of Babylon Respite Care Relief Park at Babylon Town Hall. The walk raised more than $30,000 to support services for Long Island families impacted by Alzheimer’s disease, as well as research toward better treatment and a cure. AFA is currently funding Long Island-based research projects at Stony Brook University, NYU Winthrop Hospital and the Feinstein Institutes for Medical

Research. “We’re extraordinarily grateful to everyone who took part in this event,” said Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr., President and CEO of the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America. “Seeing the enthusiasm and eagerness of all those involved in the walk was inspiring. A very heartfelt ‘thank you’ to our great partners at the Town of Babylon, the volunteers, sponsors and walkers for making a difference!” Students from Lindenhurst, West Babylon, Amityville and Half Hollow Hills School Districts served as volunteers at the walk. Five local food vendors, Mama’s Brick Oven Pizzeria, Brunello’s Italian Kitchen, Bono’s Pizzeria, Pastosa Ravioli, and Pizzaiola Restaurant all contributed special entrees, pizza, and other specialties to help make the night a success. Over 30 new guests attended to learn about their local lodge. Special guest, Sicilian Poet, Nino Provenzano made an appearance with former Suffolk County Poet Laureate, Bob Savino.
