Prior to the pandemic, donors could stop by community blood drives at convenient locations, but nearly all high schools, colleges, offices and other community groups have had to cancel their blood drives due to COVID-19. Blood donors can now make appointments to visit donor centers, but donations are at just 65% of pre-pandemic levels well below what is needed by hospitals and patients in our area. “The entire foundation of the way people donate blood has changed. The convenience factor of walking down the hallway while at work, getting out of class or donating after religious services is gone. Instead, we have to rely on people taking the extra step of proactively seeking out a place to donate. So far, that isn’t happening at the level we need,” said Andrea H. Cefarelli, Senior Executive Director of Recruitment & Marketing for New York Blood Center. “In normal times, announcing a blood emergency would create a shortterm increase in blood donations, but this will not solve this particularly difficult shortage longterm. This is an incredibly challenging time for our communities.”

LONG ISLAND COMMUNITY HOSPITAL HEROES WEEK - Long Island Community Hospital recently celebrated Heroes Week recognizing all of their healthcare heroes who stood strong against COVID-19, for the protection of our community. As part of the week-long celebration, gift bags including a commemorative medal and a long sleeve T-Shirts were distributed to the entire staff. The shirts were emblazoned with an original “Courageous Hearts” design, created especially for the hospital by a local designer. The original graphic depicts two caped heroes facing the challenges of the pandemic with purpose, commitment and care. Both were proudly worn by the staff throughout the hospital in a display of unity and team spirit.

WWII Veteran Frank Liquorie Honored

On Sunday November 8th, Frank Liquorie of Whitestone/Edgewater Park (the Bronx) received the WWII Victory Medal and a plaque for his service in the Navy during WWII. The ceremony was held at Bicentennial Veterans Memorial Park in Throgs Neck in the Bronx. The ceremony also celebrated the 75th anniversary of the end of WWII. Frank is the father of long time South Bay Neighbor News Account Executive Bob Liquorie as well as Geraldine Gress and Richard Liquorie. He is father-in-law to Barbara Liquorie, Georgette Liquorie and Ken Gress. Frank Liquorie was born in 1928 to first generation Italian American parents. He spent his childhood playing stickball, baseball and basketball
all in the confines of his South Bronx neighborhood. Frank attended St. Jerome’s School and onto Rice High School. Then came the war. Like most young men of his generation, Frank waited impatiently for his 17th birthday, when accompanied by his parents, he enlisted in the United States Navy. It was time for him to do his patriotic duty. The year was 1945. He was immediately sent to boot camp at Camp Perry, Virginia. From there onto Bayone, New Jersey on a special detail to prepare the dry docked United States ships for decommission. On to Norfork Virginia where he was assigned to the Destroyer Gyatt DD712 and shipped out to the Mediterranean where they swept for mines.
As the war was coming to an end, he went to Italy where the Italian Navy was being disbanded. His fleet inspected the Italian ships for sea worthiness and handed over many ships to the Russians. The 6th fleet then continued on to cruise the Mediterranean and stopped at many ports on the Good Neighbor Policy. These ports included but not limited to Gibraltar, Malta, Greece, Italy, and back to North Africa. The war was over. He returned to Boston and cruised onto the Caribbean and Central America continuing the Navy’s Good Neighbor Policy. Frank was discharged in 1949 and returned home to his wife Irene and large extended family. He was 21.

Pa l - O - M i n e Equestrian is a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations that was founded by Lisa Gatti. Located at 829 Old Nichols Road in Islandia, Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week. This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with stateof-the-art footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances.They also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program specifically designed for military members. Pal-O-Mine wants you to know just how they can help those who have served in our military, along with those who are still serving our nation. For more than four thousand years, horses have been an integral part of warfare. Today, horses are still playing an important role in war, this time in the recovery of military veterans who have suffered emotional and/ or physical injuries. Pal-O-Mine Equestrian is an EAGALA Designed Military Program.This designation asserts that EAGALA Certified Professionals working with the military have specialized training and experience in the military community. Sessions at the farm are action, not talk and they offer individual, group and family sessions. Pal-O-Mine offers programs to Verterans from Vietnam, Gulf War, Iraq and Afghanistan and for Service men and women who fought in Operation Iraqi Freedom,
Operation New Dawn, Operation Enduring Freedom and for Active Duty Service Members. It’s not always easy to ask for help, but the benefits of doing so outweigh the fear. One military member who received help from this organizaiton mentioned the following, “For someone in the military like me, it’s hard to swallow my pride and ask for help. This was a safe environment to open up in. “SURVEY SAYS” GAME NIGHT - The Constantino Brumidi Lodge N0. 2211 in Deer Park hosted a “Survey Says” Game Night on Saturday, November 7, 2020. The purpose was to have a social gathering, dinner and game with its members during this ongoing pandemic. The maximum was 50 people with proper social distancing and facemasks. The event was a huge success with 15 – 20 Survey Says questions based on the game show Family Feud. Lodge members were actually giving a survey weeks ago to add to the pool of questions. Various types of homemade chocolate prizes were given to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams. The Andrew McMorris Memorial Walkathon Rescheduled Lodge, which is under construction at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp in memory of Andrew Mc Morris. Andrew is the Boy Scout, who was killed by a drunk driver, while hiking the Greenbelt Trail with his Boy Scout Troop 161 in September 2018. Several other Scouts were severely injured as a result of this tragic crash. The lives of his family, friends, community and fellow scouters were forever changed by Andrew’s loss. All walkers will enjoy a complementary grab and go lunch at the conclusion of the Walkathon which is being donated by Applebee’s. North Fork Trolley will be providing complementary shuttle service for all participants
to and from the parking area for the event. Suffolk County Council of Boy Scouts of America serves over 14,000 youth in building leadership skills, highlighting American Patriotism, appreciation of the outdoors and enhancing outdoor skills, polishing moral character, and developing lifelong career aspirations and skills, through the work of over 4,000 adult volunteers. The Council has an extensive alumni network across Long Island.
External Diploma Program The External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences, and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations. EDP, is a competency based
program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home. Successful candidates for EDP include former ESL students, students who have been out of school for prolonged periods of time, or students who fare better without
