Fourth-graders in two classes at Deer Park’s John F. Kennedy Intermediate School have been motivated to improve math skills through a new weekly head-to-head competition. In the math challenge, the classrooms of
Jacqueline Amato and Jennifer Arella get together every Friday after lunch to battle each other with math review. “The students love it, and it is a great way to motivate them to study their math facts,” said Amato.
Fire Safety Program Mixing equal parts prevention and excitement, students at Deer Park’s May Moore Elementary School gained serious knowledge of fire safety during a recent visit from Deer Park Fire Department Assistant Chief Phil Scarfi, then walked outside to scream in delight as one of the department’s fire trucks shot water out of a hose and high into the air. The event was sure to leave a strong impression on the children, reminding them what to do in case of fire. Scarfi’s long-running
annual safety program in Deer Park’s elementary schools is designed in conjunction with national Fire Prevention Month. “Many thanks to firefighter Phil Scarfi and the Deer Park Fire Department for sounding the alarm about keeping our homes and families safe from fire,” said May Moore Principal Alicia Konecny. “Our students learned the importance of having working smoke alarms in their homes and discussing a safety plan with each parent.”

Concept to Creation By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s 5 o’clock on Friday the 13th, deadline day, “odd day” (11/13/15), whatever you want to call it… And here I am contemplating my column, the final piece of the puzzle that is the week’s work here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. By the time you read this, our holiday issue of Seasons™ Magazine will be on the streets, featuring the best of Long Island happenings, some highlights from New York City, and an array of helpful hints to make the shopping and decorating rush go as smoothly as possible. We have even mixed in a few recipes for you to sample at your next holiday gathering. For those unfamiliar with this sister publication,

in the early evening and enjoy some time viewing other celestial bodies, as well. Assembling at twilight, students could see the moon and stars through the high-powered lens and see the features of the moon up close and personal. This fed nicely into the solar system projects the students had been working on and rounded out the classroom learning in a more tangible way.

By: Frank Fernandez Long ago, I saw a structure, unusual in its shape and size. Imposing. Hulking, I needed a closer look. Then I noticed it.
Inconspicuous. No one had even noticed a small crack had formed. I knew that it was only a matter of Time until it would burst. Full of pride, I thought I could hold it back. Little did I know, the fear.
Adamant in its raw and unyielding power. None can try and flee.

The crack slowly spread, and I knew not what to do. But the crack still grew. Larger and larger, Hopeless in all proposals, I turned tail and ran. Hell hath no fury stronger than the man who runs. Runs away from Time. Callously spreading, Stuck in its dateless decay. Everything consumed. There was no more choice. In the end, I surrendered, surrendered to Time. When will all men learn, never to stand in the way of the wrath of Time!
