By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Getting ready, for a girl, is a complicated affair. Rare is the female who can simply roll out of bed, jump in and out of the shower in 5 minutes, throw on the first outfit she pulls out of the closet, skip the makeup and extensive hair prep – and just go. I admire those who can, really, I do. Imagine how many hours, days, weeks even, that are saved over the course of just one year – time that could be spent out and about, actually living. But no, most of us have a whole routine, one that,
if anything, becomes lengthier and more complex the bigger the occasion. Like a weekday wedding, for instance. Forget attempting to go into work, leave a little early and freshen up at home on the fly. No, I need to take the entire day off, allotting at least a good five/six hours to the beautification process. Crazy? Perhaps. But who wants to rush? It’s nice to have some time to kick back and relax, allow plenty of time for hair mishaps, smudged makeup, chipped nail polish, runs in your pantyhose, traffic… all
the wonderful nuisances that only seem to happen when you have somewhere important to go. Of course, in the end, people rarely notice all the effort. Everything falls into place, all is well and the time and effort… well, you probably could have cut it in half and come out looking much the same. But such is the life of a girl. We’re wired differently. Think how many business industries thrive on our collective neuroses. You’re welcome. And now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to start getting ready.

Student Spotlight SMART SAFETY? They’re bright yellow, they sit around your child’s neck and they are the main reason as to why your child complained the first two weeks of school more than any other year prior. The new Massapequa High School student ID lanyards are known to everyone in the school as a cumbersome burden that serves no real and effective purpose. This new form of “security and safety enforcement,” as Doctor Barbra Williams puts it, “is to make sure that the security staff can prevent unwarranted intruders from entering the school.” Robert Catinella, a Massapequa High School Senior, compares the new lanyards to “dog collars” and, just like a dog, when a student forgets his collar, he or she is subjected to unfair punishment. When one person forgets his or her “collar,” they are given a lunch

detention, meaning that they cannot go outside for lunch for the day. In addition, that lunch detention can be found on one’s permanent record. For some kids, this could mean everything when it come to getting into a good college. Who is to say that these lanyards, and the supposed purpose they serve, will even be a factor in a high stakes situation? If the school district wants to increase safety, they need to increase security, not tag their students with an ID card that serves no other purpose other than to act as a red flag for security guards. And, to be completely honest, a yellow nylon lanyard isn’t going to stop any one crazy person from getting into a school building. Rumors have been circulating in the building between the staff and students that these lanyards will soon have a magnetic strip in them, which will be required
to be used in order to enter the school. Teachers have to do this in the morning to gain access into the building before the students. Along with every student arriving in the middle lobby for all periods, this new policy, if implemented for the 2015-2016 school year, would make an already broken system chaotic and inefficient. Massapequa School District is not alone in this new wave of “smart safety.” Students in Farmingdale, Amityville and Copiague high schools are being subjected to this plague too. The only way to fix the problem of school safety is to actually address the issue properly and efficiently. In this post Sandy Hook school shooting society we live in, we must not forget that, as a community, we should be pushing for safety and not some false sense of security.

Splashes Of Hope The Riverhead Correctional Facility held a special unveiling ceremony yesterday for its new “Splashes of Hope” mural inside the jail, which was painted by incarcerated youth under the guidance of master muralist, Kirk Larsen. The project was funded and sponsored by “Splashes of Hope,” a Huntington-based nonprofit organization, and made possible through the generous donation of Theresa Santmann of Babylon. Santmann, who is also the Vice President of the organization’s Executive Board, had previously sponsored four mural panels in the jail’s Visiting Room. The mural was painted over five weeks during the months of September and October. Over the course of the project, participants

in the Sheriff’s Youth Tier Initiative received both classroom and hands on instruction in the art of mural painting. Larsen, a lecturer at the Parsons New School in New York City, worked with the incarcerated youth several days a week to produce the massive eighty-five foot mural in the jail’s main corridor. The mural depicts soothing scenes of nature and water, as well as a bridge which is meant to evoke a sense of passage to brighter times. More than 15 male youth worked on the project. A second phase, which will begin in the coming months, will include young incarcerated women. The unveiling was attended by Splashes of Hope’s Director of Operations and Muralist, Diana Fogarty, the artist,
Kirk Larsen, Theresa Santmann, the project’s sponsor, several of the incarcerated youth who worked on the projects, and members of Sheriff DeMarco’s staff. Sheriff DeMarco praised the organization and thanked everyone at Splashes of Hope for their continued support, “I am touched by Ms. Santmann’s generosity and I thank everyone at Splashes of Hope for making this project a success. It undoubtedly left an impression on the youth who participated by imparting some confidence and helping them to realize their talents. It also brightened up the hallway for our staff, and presents a positive image for all of the inmates who come through the facility.”

The friends I’ve made here in these past two months have changed the way my college experience has played out. The rugby team has acted as another family to me. I’m confident that they’ll have my back when I need them. After all, we are a team. Furthermore, my professors have acted as mentors to me. Even when I struggle in a topic, they’ll go out of their way to make sure I know what I’m doing. This idea that we should care about the people around us sums up the Augustinian traditions from which Villanova was founded upon. Combined with an overwhelming school pride, this compassion has really made me feel at home here. It makes a huge difference if you feel that you aren’t alone. Having safety in numbers is a benefit that cannot be disputed. College is an entirely new experience, and I’m trying to make the most out of it.

With the school year in full swing, I can honestly say that Villanova University is the perfect school for me. Located just outside Philadelphia, Villanova is in a prime spot on the Main Line. This affords students the opportunity to do fun things and kill boredom. The workload is a lot, but I have not really had any huge problems with timemanagement yet. I like to think that I’m surviving well enough on my own. Before college, I had my mom and dad to moderate the way I completed my schoolwork. They gave me the basis to undertake college classes without getting overwhelmed. My extracurricular involvement has really sweetened my experience at Villanova. It allowed me to make new friends, and develop another level of my appreciation for the Nova Nation. Instead of feeling homesick, I’ve begun to consider college my home.

In balancing its commitment to the consistent, safe delivery of power for its customers with its commitment to being a good environmental steward, PSEG Long Island has collaborated with the New York Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation to install a new osprey nesting pole and platform at the Nissequogue River State Park in Kings Park. “We recognize the importance that Long Island’s osprey population has on the overall ecology of the area,” said John O’Connell, vice president of transmission and distribution, PSEG Long Island. “Anything we can do to ensure that the osprey continue to return to the area, year after year, while at the same time continuing to deliver 99.9 percent electric reliability, is a win-win.” Two years ago, during Superstorm Sandy, one of the nesting poles in
Nissequogue River State Park was damaged. Eager to have the pole and platform restored before next year’s nesting season, the Parks Department recently contacted PSEG Long Island for assistance. “NYS Parks mission is to balance patrons’ recreational activities with the protection of our natural resources. Replacing the damaged pole and platform does both of those beautifully,” said Wayne R. Horsley, Regional Director, Long Island State Park Region. “Ospreys are a favorite among park patrons and the project will provide another nest site for the NY State ‘Species of Concern.’ Parks appreciates the willingness of PSEG Long Island to restoring a nesting platform to NRSP.” The replacement of the damaged pole and platform provides a safe nesting area for the osprey away from vital electrical infrastructure,
helping PSEG Long Island maintain strong electric service reliability. Ospreys will often use utility poles and transmission structures for nesting, which jeopardizes system reliability, causes outages and damages equipment. Such nesting also puts the birds in danger of electrocution, as their large wingspan can complete the circuit between closely spaced energized equipment or between an energized wire and a neutral ground wire. Long Island is home to many species of birds, including the majestic osprey. Ospreys are large, beautiful birds and a popular sight on Long Island. From the 1950s through the 1970s, Long Island’s osprey population decreased and became endangered. The effort to build safe nesting sites on or near waterways has contributed to the rise in the population of osprey.

Gala Event A Success On October 27th, the Mondays at Racine Executive Committee hosted its second annual Gala Event at Obession Catering Hall in Lindenhurst. Honorees Carmen DePasquale and Joseph Mastalia of DePasquale Salon Systems were in attendace along with representivives from four different local health care systems as well as elected officials. Carmen Depasquale and Joseph Mastalia were given Esteem Mentorship Awards for their tireless efforts in helping the Mondays at Racine Program grow and come closer to the mission of changing the face of cancer using the skills of the beauty industry. North Shore LIJ Health Care Systems, which has been a supporting entity for the Mondays at Racine Program for well over a year, showed their support by having Dr. Raptis, Dr. Muratori, Dr, Schwartz, Dr, McKenna and Dr. Ames attend the gala event. Dr. James Harris, a “Top Doctor” as recognized by U. S News and World Report, along with support staff, represented Catholic Healthcare Systems through Good Samaritan Hospital. Dr. Michael Pearl, Stony Brook University’s
Gynecologic Oncologist was also in attendance. Dr. Melissa Fana, Breast & Oncoplastic Surgeon, as well as Dr. Mangiamelli, General Surgeon from Brookhaven Hospital, attended with colleagues. Both spoke to the sold out audience about the benefits of the Mondays at

Steven Flotteron was elected to serve on Islip’s Town Council in 2006 and has been passionately involved in projects and initiatives that help improve the quality of life of Islip’s residents. Legislator Tom Cilmi and Councilman Steven Flotteron presented The Mondays at Racine’s Honorees, Carmen DePasquale and Joseph Mastalia, with a citation for being great mentors. The two public officials also presented Mondays at Racine a citation for the wonderful work that is being done. 400 guests were served cocktails, appetizers, dinner and dessert from Marconi Manor Caterers. Nina Etcetera provided entertainment during cocktail hour. D.J. Nina Rizzo kept the party atmosphere going in between speeches and official presentations. On Halloween, children in grades 3-5 at Parliament Place Elementary School in the North Babylon School District wore their most creative costumes for a special morning contest. Students went all out for the competition, and six children from each grade level were nominated to face each other for one of six different awards: scariest costume, best homemade costume, funniest costume, prettiest costume, most creative costume and best costume. Adam Kayku dressed as a robot and won best
homemade costume; Arianna George wore vivid colors and had a painted face, and she won most creative costume; Mia Marquez stepped out of Frozen to snatch the award for prettiest costume; Brianna Edwards was a frightful prom queen and took the crown for scariest costume; Daniel Schlyer giddied up as a horse and won funniest costume, and John Jordan, who dressed as a crippled old man, played the part perfectly and won best costume. Parliament Place Principal Drew Olson then
handed out prizes not only to the winners of the contest, but all students who were nominated. “You all did such an amazing job, and each and every one of you is a winner,” he told them. (NAPSI)—While many people turn to prescription drugs to try to control migraines once they start, there aren’t any that are terribly effective and none that will stop the migraines before they happen. There is, however, another option and it doesn’t involve taking medication. The Problem Almost 5 million people in the U.S. experience at least one migraine attack a month. More than 11 million people blame migraines for causing moderate to severe disability and 91 percent of them can’t function normally during migraine attack, according to the American Migraine Study, which also reveals that the average migraine sufferer misses two days of work per year. It’s an expense both in terms of career—lost work—and medical costs. Migraine sufferers use 2.5 times the amount of prescription drugs and have six times as many diagnostic tests and services as nonsufferers. The average monthly health cost of a migraine sufferer is 60 percent higher than that of people who don’t suffer from migraines, according to the National Institutes of Health. According to The Migraine Trust, migraine often occurs for the first time in teens and young adults but is most common in the 30-something age group. Who Can Help
