Bethpage Turkey Drive 2020 Volunteers The Bethpage Turkey Drive to benefit the Island Harvest Food Bank will take place on Friday, November 19, 2021, from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM. The 13th annual food drive will include a no-contact donation car drive-through which will enable community residents to remain in their cars while volunteers remove donations from the vehicles. Long Islanders are asked to donate frozen turkeys, non-perishable food items or cash donations. These donations will go directly to Island Harvest Food Bank, which will help supply Thanksgiving meals to the more than 300,000 food-insecure Long Islanders through its distribution network of over 400 food pantries, soup kitchens, and other feeding programs on Long Island. Non-perishable food items needed include canned goods, cereal, pasta, rice, boxed juices, and shelf-stable milk (please, no glass containers). The Bethpage Turkey Drive will take place at Bethpage Federal Credit Union’s headquarters located at 899 South Oyster Bay Road in Bethpage.
For those unable to make a donation on November 19th, or would rather show their support online, Bethpage is accepting online monetary donations at http:// www.lovebethpage.com/ turkeydrive, beginning in November, through Friday, December 31st. Donations can also be made at any Bethpage branch. “2020 was a recordbreaking year for the turkey drive,” said Linda Armyn, Senior Vice President, Bethpage Federal Credit Union. “We hope Long Islanders continue to show their support again this year as the need on Long Island is still great. Since the first Bethpage Turkey Drive was organized in 2009, hundreds of community volunteers have come out to assist in the collection of more than 40,000 turkeys and over 168,000 pounds of food, which were then given to Long Island families facing hardship in time for the holidays. Island Harvest Food Bank has seen an increase in the requests for food and support services among the 400 community-based agencies it serves. About 70,000 individuals receive food assistance from the Island Harvest Food Bank network each week.

Troops sometimes find themselves needing support services provided by the United Service Organizations (USO). To boost morale for American service members all around the globe, the USO is meeting them where they are. “The heart of our mission is to ensure service members stay strong through connecting them to the things they love and fight for,” says Christopher Plamp, senior vice president of operations, programs, and entertainment at the USO. “When the pandemic prevented us from serving in person as we have done for over our 80-year history, we innovated new ways to virtually foster the spirit of connectedness. As we look forward to a post-pandemic future, we are proud to continue
strengthening the military – no matter the time or place.” Here are a few ways the USO brings vital morale and essential services directly to the nation’s military in far-reaching corners of the world: • For military units stationed in distant locations where there is no USO presence, USO2GO packages bridge the gap. USO2GO kits ensure service members have some of the small comforts of home, such as electronic gaming, sports equipment, board games, movies and personal care items. In 2020, USO2GO was heavily utilized to support quarantine sites for service members at military installations around the world. • Service members can be called at a moment’s notice to leave their families and homes to respond to emergency situations – all amidst a global pandemic. As troops work to save lives in moments of crisis, Mobile USO vehicles provide vital resources, support and comfort. These units also help serve the National Guard in times of natural disasters such as hurricanes, wildfires, tornados and more. Equipped with food preparation areas, WiFi, TVs, relaxation areas, gaming stations and outdoor activities, these
USO centers on wheels are a welcoming haven for military members in hardto-reach areas. • Virtual and in-person entertainment reconnects service members to experiences and memories of home. Since April 2020, USO Military Virtual Programming (MVP) entertainment programs have hosted 135 sessions with more than 170 entertainers. MVP events reached 49 countries, including 22 ships at sea and 52 U.S. states and territories. Attendees engaged with celebrities via live Q&A sessions, performances, one-on-one calls and more than 140 live “look-ins” at military locations. • The USO Care Package Program provides service members with two different types of care packages: Snack Packs and Toiletry Packs. These care packages give busy troops a needed boost. In November 2020, the 3 millionth care package since 9/11 was delivered to a service member stationed in East Africa. Project 9 Line is a non-profit organization that was formed in 2014 by Patrick Donohue Their focus is to bridge the communication gap between veterans and civilians. Through outreach, communication and purpose, they enable veterans to express themselves uniquely through forms of art.

Patrick Donohue is a veteran himself and has an inspiring story of his own. He served in the Army on active duty from 2008 to 2012. He was deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan from May of 2010 to April of 2011. Later, he reenlisted into the Army reserves, which he served in from 2014 to 2016.

Slowly but surely, things started to turn around for him. While he was in the VA hospital, he was exposed to some art and wellness programs that completely transformed the way he viewed himself. “I started writing poetry, meditating, and doing yoga and these activities had a profound impact on me.” He was looking to see if any veteran organization offered those programs and services outside of the VA and he didn’t find any, so at that time he decided that he would build it himself. Probably not even realizing how courageous and strong he really was, Patrick then wrote a business plan for what became this organization (Project 9 Line), so that he could bring art and wellness programs to other veterans on Long Island who might also be struggling. Little did he know that participating in those wellness programs and helping other veterans would become his calling and passion in life. In late 2020, Donohue was sworn in as an attorney and started his own law firm focused on veterans law, specifically VA disability and discharge upgrades. To this day he still runs that firm, and he also is an

“Just a few years ago I had a tough time integrating and now I’m a productive and happy father, husband and attorney. I currently practice meditation, BJJ , yoga, play ice hockey, and I float in a float tank as often as I can. All of these practices are best for me as they bring me into the moment. I believe the best way to overcome trauma is to be in the moment as much as possible. In the past I have participated in many of Project 9 Line’s programs, including stand up comedy, which also helped me immensely on my journey.” Patrick still works on himself day to day, but knows that even if you face hard times, you can eventually get through them. After combat, Patrick got hit right away with some less-than-ideal feelings, such as anxiety and depression. “I was totally lost and alone and I had pushed away everybody I loved and fear ruled my life. Anxiety and depression filled my day and I never thought that I would be able to be a regular person again,” said Donohue. “I avoided everything and everybody to best protect myself from the unknown. Finally when the pain became so great I had a moment of clarity and I asked for help. I checked into the VA hospital in Northport and began the process of what ultimately turned my life around.”

New Mural by Local High School Students Unveiled
Town of Babylon officials recently gathered at Cedar Beach with local students, artists and members of the Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts, Inc. (BACCA) to unveil and dedicate a new mural in the tunnel that runs under Ocean Parkway and connects Cedar Beach to Cedar Beach Marina. The nautical themed mural, designed by students from Amityville, Babylon, Deer Park, North Babylon and West Babylon High Schools, was facilitated by the Parks Department and BACCA through the “Babylon Together Project.” The “Babylon Together Project” is a long term partnership with the Town of Babylon Local JFK STUDENTS LEARN FROM FIRST RESPONDERS - The Deer Park Fire Development Corporation Department and Suffolk County SCOPE recently visited Deer Park’s John F. Kennedy Intermediate School to discuss fire safety and teach students about the daily routine of police officers. “We are so grateful that the fire department took time from their busy days to share with us,” Principal Kelly Benson said. “Our students enjoyed the day and explored these two wonderful professions. State Parks Announces Hunting Schedules For 2021/2022 The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation announced that hunting will be permitted within specific areas of select Long Island State Parks for the upcoming hunting season. Hunting regulations in state parks are developed in cooperation with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), which establishes hunting seasons throughout the state. In addition to statewide hunting rules, special restrictions are in effect in state parks to protect visitors and to address wildlife management goals for each park. Connecting Military Parents And Children, One Story At A Time (StatePoint) For deployed service members who are also parents, being away from their kids is often the hardest part of the job. This is why the United Service Organizations (USO) has prioritized connecting military parents with their families. One way to bring service members a reminder of home is through USO entertainment tours, the most famous tour veteran, of course, being legendary comedian Bob Hope. Hope’s legacy of service lives on today through the Bob Hope Legacy Reading Program.
Bringing story time ondemand around the globe, the program connected more than 39,000 military families around the world through reading in 2019 alone. Service members visit participating USO locations, record themselves reading their child’s favorite story and the USO ships that recording and book home to loved ones. Likewise, military kids can record themselves reading a book and share the story time memories with their parents serving overseas. Additionally, local USO reading events encourage kids to use their
creativity and complete a craft that complements a story’s theme. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit and many locations had to temporarily shut their doors, this did not deter USO volunteers and staff from finding innovative ways to continue their efforts safely. USO Erbil in Iraq put their ingenuity to work and outfitted the back of a pickup truck with a makeshift trifold to serve as a reading “room.” They then decorated the inside of the room and packed up a box of books, some props and a chair. The USO team
drove the truck all around base, stopping outside popular locations as well as remote areas to reach as many service members as possible with their new, unofficial “Bob Hope on the Road” reading room. How To Help Veterans In Need
Contact a local veterans’ hospital to inquire about their volunteer programs. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs notes that each year more than 75,000 volunteers spend more than 11 million hours in service to America’s veterans. Visiting veterans at the hospital to hear their stories can lift their spirits and aid in their recoveries. In addition, veterans’ hospitals may have volunteer opportunities that make it easier for hospitals to operate at optimal capacity. • Help a neighbor. Unfortunately, many veterans return home with injuries that affect their ability to make it through a typical day without assistance. Disabled
veterans may be unable to do their own grocery shopping or maintain their homes. If a neighbor or nearby veteran is facing such hurdles, offer to do his or her shopping or mow his or her lawn. Such tasks won’t take much time but can make a world of difference to veterans. • Offer professional services free of charge. Professionals who want to help veterans can offer their services free of charge. Accountants can offer to prepare veterans’ tax returns for free, while attorneys can provide legal advice to veterans who need it. Contractors can help disabled veterans by offering to make alterations to their homes
for free or at cost. • Employ social media to help local veterans. Many people who want to help local veterans might not be able to do so more than one day per week. But some veterans may require daily assistance. Men and women can start a locallybased Facebook group for fellow members of their community who want to pitch in to help local veterans. Such a group can make it easier to share information and arrange help for veterans in need. Many veterans return home from serving overseas in need of help. Offering such help can improve veterans’ lives while letting them know their efforts and sacrifices are appreciated.
