After an impressive rendition of the national anthem by Isabella Serrano, the Frost’s football, boys soccer, girls soccer, kickline and cheerleading teams were recognized, and the students enjoyed performances by the latter.

This Country Will Never Be The Same
The caring young mathematicians of Deer Park’s John Quincy Adams Primary School knew they had done something wonderful earlier this year when they raised more than $8,900 in funds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital as part of the school’s fifth annual Math-A-Thon program, but the full extent of their charitable endeavor was not yet clear. St. Jude recently informed JQA that it had earned a spot in the top 100 Math-A-Thon fundraising schools for the 2015-2016 school year, coming in at No. 86 in the entire nation.

ELECTION DAY 2016 This presidential campaign is like no other. One candidate is a successful businessman who beat all the odds, plus 16 other Republicans, and became the Republican nominee for President. The other candidate is a lawyer and a lifetime politician, who beat Bernie Sanders and became the first woman Democratic nominee. The tone of this campaign has been quite intense throughout the primaries, the conventions and the three debates. In many ways, the country has never been more divided. You have Republican Donald J. Trump, who wants to “Drain the Swamp” of Washington D.C. and rebuild our country.
You have Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton, who wants to continue with the current path we are on of big government being involved in many aspects of our lives. The media distractions have been unbearable, and arguably quite one-sided in most of their coverage. No matter who you support, nobody condones distasteful words spoken or irresponsible and potentially criminal actions taken by either candidate - and I think you know what and who I am talking about in each instance! Putting all this aside, you have a simple choice to make: Trump - who has earned money, power and fame and wants to help our country restabilize and prosper

Highlights of this year’s event focused on security in the Brentwood School District in the wake of the high profile murders of two students, and others, by suspected gang members, as well as the scope of the gang problem in Long Island’s suburbs. DeMarco stated, “Coordination and intelligence sharing are keys to combatting gangs. Gangs recognize no boundaries, and neither should we in law enforcement. Our willingness and ability to share gang-related investigative leads is one of the most effective ways we can work together to defeat street gangs, and this annual conference gives us the opportunity to strengthen our networks and build relationships.”

After an impressive rendition of the national anthem by Isabella Serrano, the Frost’s football, boys soccer, girls soccer, kickline and cheerleading teams were recognized, and the students enjoyed
performances by the latter. “It was great to see the enthusiasm and school spirit in all of our students leading up to homecoming,” said Associate Principal Gary Ramonetti.

Back in the Spotlight By: Jamie Lynn Ryan
This year, I gingerly decided to throw my tap shoes back into the ring by enrolling in my old dance studio’s Adult Tap class, after five years of “retirement.” There is something about the camaraderie of dancing with old friends – alumni, as we are referred to – that brings back a flood of happy memories of days gone by… days spent on stage in tutus and tiaras, sequins and sparkles, smiling for the audience in the dimly lit auditorium as we performed the routines we had perfected over the last six months. So, when the opportunity presented itself this September, I decided to give it a go. I have to admit, I wasn’t
sure what to expect after such a long absence. But, to my pleasant surprise, not much has changed. The old tap shoes still fit, the hardwood floor of the studio shines just as I remembered it, and the steps… well, they’re a work in progress, week by week, as my muscle memory slowly but surely recalls the footwork that at one point had been second nature. They say that those you spend years enjoying extracurricular activities with become like a second family of sorts over time, and the dance studio is no exception – especially after 20 years of essentially growing up with the same core group of girls. Fast forward a couple of decades, and some of these
same “girls” are now married with children of their own – a few dancing at the studio as well – or pursuing careers in various fields. To say “I feel old” would be an understatement; and yet, somehow, once we all enter the studio, those “grown up” problems seem to melt away. Flash back to the little girl in the pale yellow tutu, arms flailing, feet scurrying in a mad dash to join her class onstage for her very first dance recital… Where ever did the years go indeed? It’s nice to know that, as our lives continue to move at a frenzied pace day after day, there is still time to step into another mode, lace up the old tap shoes and shuffle our problems away. At least for an hour, anyway.

Happy Homecoming On a bright and sunny fall day, the Deer Park community enjoyed a happy homecoming on October 15th, featuring rousing performers and a victory by the high school’s football Falcons. During the parade, musical-themed floats included tributes to “High School Musical,” “Hairspray” and “Willy Wonka,” but the seniors, adorned with the now traditional Burger King cardboard crowns, won the competition with their ode to “The Wizard of Oz.” Members of the Horodnicki family, including retired district
nurse Helene Horodnicki, donated $1,200 to Deer Park’s athletics program and served as grand marshals of the parade. For years, the family has presented scholarships to Deer Park students in memory of Class of 2005 graduate Ryan Horodnicki. Prior to the varsity football game, Principal Charles Cobb and Superintendent Eva J. Demyen both addressed the audience at Al Centamore Football Field, as did the field’s namesake, board of education member Al Centamore. Homecoming king Jarret Bonser and queen Nicole
Tudor were crowned, followed by crowd-pleasing performances by the marching band, step team, the high school and Robert Frost Middle School kicklines, and cheerleaders from the high school, middle school and PAL. In an exciting battle, the Falcons defeated Riverhead’s Blue Waves, 34-27. Keshaun Jones began the scoring on the game’s first play, returning the opening kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown; he later scored two additional touchdowns from passes by Bonser.
Deer Park High School announced the top 10 ranked seniors of the 20162017 year at its annual celebratory breakfast on October 7th. Joined in the school library by their proud families, these remarkable students received accolades as they looked ahead to graduation. Ranked first was future Class of 2017 valedictorian Omaier Mohiuddin.
Ranking second was Alima Hossain, the future salutatorian. Rounding out the top 10 were Andrew Siford (ranked third), Kayla Griffin (fourth), Kristina Occhino (fifth), Ryan Verdile (sixth), Christopher Cox (seventh), Malique Papailler (eighth), Michael Charumaneeroj (ninth) and Nicolas Gallo (10th). “The Top 10 breakfast is truly one of our most
enjoyable days of the school year,” said Principal Charles Cobb. “We are able to recognize the hard work and dedication that these students have persistently demonstrated during their career here at Deer Park High School. I am extremely proud of all these students and wish them continued success in all of their future endeavors.”
