Deer Park High School and the entire Deer Park school community proudly celebrated this year’s homecoming game against Huntington High School on Oct. 14 at Al Centamore Football Field.
Due to inclement weather, Deer Park’s much anticipated homecoming parade, pregame ceremony and halftime performances were canceled. As a result, student floats were judged and displayed
before the game, and the winners of the floats and homecoming court were announced in school on Monday. The seniors took first place in the float contest, followed by the juniors, sophomores and
freshmen. Calvin Nguyen and Katia Papailler were selected as homecoming royalty, with the rest of the homecoming court consisting of Saad Iqbal, Hayden Lovinsky, Antonia Lugo, Muhsin Maqsood,
Anthony Marcajoux, D’Anni Marshall, Olivia Monte, Joel Nash and Mia Skoubas. Although the weather conditions were less than ideal, fans sporting white, grey and maroon

How Does Voting-By-Mail Work? Each Election Day, Americans vote and thus participate in a fundamental principle of democracy. Elections take place on various levels, from local governments to presidential elections. Until recently, to cast a ballot for a particular election, most voters had to physically appear at their respective polling locations and submit their votes in person. Mailin voting, also known as absentee voting, was frowned upon and not widely available. It first arose during the Civil War, when soldiers were allowed to cast ballots from the battlefield. Absentee voting later became an issue during World War II, when Congress passed laws in 1942 and 1944 enabling soldiers stationed overseas to participate in elections. More recently, during the 1980s, more
states made absentee voting available, and it is no longer uncommon for voters to be mailed ballots and submit them before Election Day. According to MIT, the movement to vote by mail reached new levels with the 2020 elections, which occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic. Some attest that mailin-voting enables many individuals who would not normally be able to physically make it to the polls on Election Day to cast votes. Mailin balloting works in different ways. The United States has universal voteby-mail and absentee balloting. With the former, ballots are mailed to all voters. In the latter, voters must request an absentee ballot. In terms of a requested absentee ballot, a voter must write, call, or request a ballot online. Upon
receipt, the voter will make his or her choice, and then place the sealed ballot in a security envelope provided with the ballot. The voter signs the outside of the second envelope to certify that he or she is a registered voter. When the election authority receives the ballot, it certifies the registration of the voter and that the address matches the one on record with the election authority. On Election Day, the mail ballots are added to the results of the votes with those from people who visited the polls in person. According to the Brookings Institution, a nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C. that works to improve policy and governance at local, national, and global levels, there is no partisan advantage to either party related to voting by mail. Also, absentee ballots
benefit senior citizens, low-income people, and those without access to transportation. Despite some news stories in recent years that may lead people to
believe mail-in votes come with risk, the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University says there is no evidence that mail balloting increases electoral fraud, as several
anti-fraud protections are built into the process. Mail-in voting is an option for many people across the U.S. It is secure and convenient for many voters.

Get Ready For Medicare Open Enrollment Season Free Medicare Open Enrollment Assistance Through FCA

Navigating Medicare and choosing a plan that best meets your needs can be tricky. Our health care needs change over time, so you should carefully consider your foreseeable health care needs each year. A
plan that worked for us previously may not be the best choice going forward. As we head into the Medicare Open Enrollment season, it is important for people to read mail from their current health plans to see if there are any changes that might impact them for 2024. You should have this notice by October 1. Plans frequently change their premiums, copays, deductibles, and formularies. Providers may leave or be added to a plan’s network. It is important to keep informed about your coverage. The Medicare & You 2024 booklet, which arrives in homes of all eligible for Medicare by late September, contains valuable information about Medicare benefits and a description of changes for next year. Medicare beneficiaries
should review their coverage during the Open Enrollment period to determine if their current coverage is still the right one for them. Medicare beneficiaries who are in a Medicare Advantage Plan (HMO or PPO) and don’t change their plan by December 7th will have an additional opportunity to switch Medicare Advantage plans between January 1 and March 31. The Medicare website (www.medicare.gov) can help you reevaluate and compare available plans. According to the NYC Department of Veterans’ Services, there are more than 150,000 veterans living in NYC. “Every veteran makes sacrifices and puts themselves in harm’s way in service to our country. qualifying homeowners can receive a basic HEAP benefit of between $400 and $976 for oil, propane, kerosene, natural gas or electricity. Renters can receive a benefit of $45 or $50. Each year, thousands of Suffolk County households receive assistance through HEAP. Assistance is awarded on a first-come, firstserved basis while available. Households that received a benefit in last year’s program should have already received their applications in the mail. Individuals who have not previously received the benefit and wish to submit a new application to the Office for the Aging must meet one of the following conditions: • Age 60 or older, or
• Under 60 and receiving Social Security Disability, or • Under 60 and receiving Supplemental Security Income Code A To request an application, call the Office for the Aging HEAP Hotline at (631) 853-8326. Applicants who do not meet the Office for the Aging guidelines may still qualify based on HEAP Tier Income Guidelines for income and household size. A family’s gross monthly household income must be at or below the poverty standards set by New York State for HEAP. For example, monthly income for a 1-person household cannot exceed $3,035, for a 2-person household the limit is $3,970 and for a 3, 4, or 5-person household it cannot exceed $4,904, $5,838, or $6,772 respectively. For more information or maximum monthly income levels for larger households, call the Department of Social Services HEAP Unit at (631) 853-8820. For heating and utility emergencies after business hours and on weekends, please call the Department of Social Services at (631) 854-9100. “I urge all residents who qualify or even think they may qualify to apply for this vital assistance,” Legislator Donnelly said.
