North Babylon’s Boy Scout Troop 399 enjoyed an adventurous camping weekend on September 15th-17th at McMillan Woods Youth campground in Gettysburg National Military Park in Pennsylvania. The Gettysburg National Military Park protects and interprets the landscape of the 1863 Battle of Gettysburg during the Civil War. The boys hiked over 20 miles through the Gettysburg Battlefield, the Gettysburg National Cemetery and viewed many of the park’s civil war
artifacts in the Gettysburg Museum. One of the boys’ favorite experiences on the trip was viewing the Cyclorama of the Battle of Gettysburg which is a three dimensional panoramic painting from 1882 which depicts the final Confederate assault. After the long hike, the boys enjoyed pizza, ice cream and an evening ghost walk. Boy Scout Troop 399 meetings are held each Thursday evening that schools are open at 7:30 p.m. in the Marion G. Vedder Elementary School cafeteria. For more

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program recently received a check for $24,200 from LI2Day, a Long Island based organization that fund raises for local breast cancer organizations through walks and other events. The beneficiary check represented Adelphi’s portion from the annual walk that was held last June. This was the 14th fundraising walk and todate the Adelphi Program
has received $412,450. Team members solicit sponsorships for their participation in LI2Day events. The Adelphi Breast Cancer Program is an official beneficiary for the 2018 event scheduled for Saturday, June 9th, 2018. “We are so proud of our team,” says Hillary Rutter, the director of the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program. “They are a dedicated group that supports us every year.” LI2DAY was organized in 2004 to raise awareness

Suffolk LIGHT The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD), is pleased to announce the launch of our new phone APP, Suffolk LIGHT (Long Island Guide to Health and Treatment). Suffolk LIGHT, was designed as resource to help and support individuals, families, schools and communities with substance abuse challenges. Mr. Hilary Mathwasa of PD House, designed and created the APP at no cost to help further the mission of LICADD by offering resources accessible at any time. LICADD Executive Director, Steve Chassman shares, “LICADD is grateful to Mr. Mathwasa for creating this dynamic resource for those seeking information, guidance and immediate help, all in the
palm of their hand.” The APP includes, a list of local alcohol and drug treatment providers, a direct link to law enforcement, a list of 12step meetings, educational information and more. A free download is available at the APP Store for both iPhone and Android systems. Says Mr. Mathwasa, “LICADD has been in this fight for over 60 years. Giving them access to the tools and technology to reach more people, will save more lives. The Simple Things As we usher in November, we tend to take stock of the year as a whole - where it stands, those goals we had intended to achieve along the way, and how the two correlate. Life is a constant evaluation in that way. While the month may be centered around the beginning of the holiday season, the concept of Thanksgiving is one that can be applied throughout the year. Perhaps this is why it is one of my least favorite holidays, simply for the fact that it seems short-sighted to designate one particular day to “be thankful.” What about the other 364? It shouldn’t take a turkey dinner and wallto-wall football games to gain that needed perspective. Before the commercialism of the “season of giving” took over, it was simply an opportunity to spend time
with family and friends, to gather over food and reminisce, and to make new memories along the way. Looking through old photo albums, the one thing that resonates through the years is the sense of togetherness that always existed; so strong you can practically see it reverberating off the pages. This is a feeling that one can only hope to recapture with each passing year. All the shopping, the cooking, the cleaning, the decorating, the wrapping… what is it for, if not that moment when everyone comes together to enjoy one another’s company. It’s the little things that matter - a special greeting card with a thoughtful inscription, remembering someone’s favorite type of dessert, a lovingly wrapped gift topped with a beautiful bow. The rest, as they say, is

merely window dressing. While the year may be drawing to a close, there is still plenty of time to refocus on those goals we may have allowed to slip through the cracks. Days and months and years are but markers of time; the moment itself is what matters. The only deadlines we should pay mind to are those we set for ourselves. The plan is always evolving, and so, too, must we. Don’t think of it as two months left to achieve a particular task; or two months left until the clock resets and we can put 2017 behind us for good - neither approach serves us today, now. And now is all that matters. “It is very simple to be happy, but it is very difficult to be simple.” ~ Rabindranath Tagore
MAUREEN’S HAVEN!
Maureen’s Haven is a local organization that helps homeless men and women around Long Island. This program brings a variety of organizations and houses of worship together to help meet the needs of the homeless during the cold winter months, which is known as their Emergency Shelter Program, starting on November 1st and running through March 1st.
The host facilities and supporting organizations provide not just a place for the homeless to sleep, but a nutritious dinner, breakfast and a packed meal to go. They provide support by embracing the values of human dignity, respect, service, compassion, teamwork, diversity and love. Recognizing the need for consistent support and services for the homeless in the region, Maureen’s Haven opened a day center in Riverhead to provide respite from the cold and year-round services for this vulnerable and growing population. The day center is the first of its kind in Suffolk County. A variety of programs are offered throughout the year. In addition to meeting their immediate needs, Maureen’s Haven strives to place individuals in supportive housing, which provides consistent shelter and case management. Over the past three years, Maureen’s Haven has placed over 30 individuals in housing, provided counseling and assistance with job search and placement, and offered
a continuum of care that has helped individuals in rebuilding their lives. After meeting recently with Maryann, the Executive Director of this wonderfully compassionate organization, and taking a tour of their day center, I came away with a much better understanding of who they are and what they do. The warm sincerity I felt while hearing her speak about the heart of this organization and experiencing what it’s like to be at their day center was quite emotional and aweinspiring. Maureen’s Haven is currently in need of various donations and volunteers. As far as donations, they need the following: latex gloves, cleaning supplies, garbage bags, toilet paper, paper towels, coffee/tea keurig pods, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and of course monetary donations. They are also in need of people to volunteer their time in the following areas at their day center: assisting in organizing their donation room, building shelves in the donation room, assisting with office work duties and assisting with cleaning up the day center. They also need men to serve as overnight staff to watch over the homeless on Monday nights at Aquebogue’s Our Redeemer Church. On September 24th, Kevin Neumann, a Life Scout from Troop 399, North Babylon, completed his Eagle Project, which was to collect 1500 lbs. of food for the St. Paul’s Food Pantry. With help from members of his troop and the North Babylon community, he far surpassed his original goal and collected almost 2 tons (3900 lbs) of food! Long Island’s largest food drive event, the 9th Annual Bethpage Turkey Drive to benefit Island Harvest Food Bank, will take place on Friday, November 17th, from 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Donations can be dropped off at Bethpage Federal Credit Union’s headquarters located at 899 South Oyster Bay Road in Bethpage. Long Islanders are asked to drop off frozen turkeys, non-perishable food items (except those in glass containers), supermarket gift cards,
or cash donations. These donations will go directly to Island Harvest Food Bank, which will then help supply Thanksgiving meals to the more than 300,000 food-insecure Long Islanders through its distribution network of over 550 food pantries, soup kitchens, and other feeding programs on Long Island. “Over the past month, we have seen the great generosity of Long Islanders as thousands helped support people in need across our country

The average adult body is made up of 50%-65% water. Our bodies can’t store this water, so we need to replenish it frequently. Before, when I wasn’t at my healthiest, I didn’t drink water often.
