TAKING THE GOLD - Julia Boss, a senior at the Deer Park High School, competed in the 2015 International Cup World Baton Championships, held in Abbotsford, British Columbia, this past August. Her team Synergy, a Miami-based twirling organization, competed in Team Level “A” against 12 teams from around the world. Their no-drop routine captured the gold medal. Congratulations!
The statistics are startling. One in three women and one in four men will experience domestic violence in their lifetime and right here in Suffolk County more than 7,500 incidents of domestic violence were reported in 2013 according to the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services. “Domestic violence shatters families, leaves loved ones and friends feeling helpless, and tears apart communities,” said Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay. McKay said that according the Center for Disease Control nearly 1 in 4 women in the United States reports experiencing violence by a current or former spouse or partner at some point in her life. Miscellaneous Musings By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s been awhile since I’ve thrown together one of my random, rambling columns, touching on this, that and the other thing. Here goes… Baseball in October, that annual celebration of excellence that us Yankees fans have been fortunate to experience, well, annually for the most part. Congratulations to our New York neighbors, the Mets, for holding it together just long enough to make their longsuffering fans believe. Let’s hope the ride continues into the next round; but, either way, a proud showing. Football in October, well, that’s a different story entirely. The season is still
less than halfway over, and up until just a few weeks ago, tailgating could have been comfortably enjoyed in t-shirts and shorts. But no more. Break out the sweaters and scarves, boots and gloves – it’s gonna be a chilly few months ahead. Speaking of, have you made your Christmas shopping lists yet? What are you waiting for? At this rate, the bathing suits for next summer will be out on the racks in a matter of weeks. Forget Autumn – holiday season is upon us, with various countdowns marking the minutes until Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. {For those inquiring readers, Buddy the Betta, who just celebrated his
eight-month birthday, is eagerly looking forward to his very first holiday season. Perhaps I’ll decorate his tiny plant and string some lights on his bowl. He’s still patiently awaiting his sixmonth birthday shopping spree – something about wanting a “mini-castle” to sleep in. He’s also highly offended that no one noticed his addition to our staff box several weeks ago and is refusing to write another guest column, in protest.} Me, I’m looking forward to my own fall shopping spree. There’s something about the change of seasons and the transition of weather that calls for some new apparel, don’t you think? If only I had room to stuff one more thing in my closet…

Taking Over Tech
Anastasia Tzortzatos is the new district administrator for instructional technology at Deer Park School District, replacing Andrew Choi. She comes to the district
from the Lawrence School District, where she worked as an English as a second language teacher for 12 years. While at Lawrence, she served as both the PM school and ESL/world language coordinator for the past two years, and as the summer school coordinator from 20122014. Tzortzatos, a Massapequa Park resident, earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Adelphi University, where she also received a master’s degree in teaching English to speakers of
other languages. She later attended Stony Brook University, where she obtained certification as a school building leader and school district leader. She is currently working on her doctorate in educational leadership at St. John’s University. “I look forward to facilitating a more intensive use of technology in everyday lessons to assist in the understanding and growth of every Deer Park student,” said Tzortzatos.
Night at the Races The 8th New York District Knights of Columbus consisting of Our Lady of the Rosary Council in Deer Park, Our Lady of Grace in West Babylon, St. Joseph the Carpenter in Babylon, and Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal in Wyandanch,
recently hosted a Night at the Races on October 3rd at St. Matthews RC Parish Recreation Hall in Dix Hills to benefit the Mercy Inn Soup Kitchen in Wyandanch. The Knights, as always worked hard and raised $4,400 in profit from the
race operations and $2,000 in profit from other sales and direct donations. This will give the Soup Kitchen over $6,000 to help them feed the hundreds of needy families in the surrounding community.

Soccer Challenge Held The Knights of Columbus 8th New York District hosted a District Level Soccer Challenge Competition at Our Lady of the Rosary Council Athletic Field in Deer Park.
The Long Island Game Farm – Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo celebrated its final weekend of 2015 with its first-ever Pirates and Princesses Treasure Hunt on Sunday, October 11th. Hundreds children of all ages donned their best ball gowns and swashbuckling attire to participate in an expedition around the zoo. Prizes were awarded to all participants, who also had a chance to take pictures with a reallife pirate and princess. In honor of the high seas adventure theme, The Priceless Parrot Rescue Organization was in attendance to host a “take a pic with a parrot” booth. The photo opportunity exhibit raised donations to support the Priceless
Parrot’s rescue efforts. The event also supported the Long Island Butterfly Effect Project by encouraging all event attendees to bring with them a new or used children’s book(s), appropriate for grades one to seven. Additionally, the Game Farm offered all Columbus Day Weekend visitors an increased coupon rate as well as the chance to get up-close and personal with the zoo’s Bearded Dragons. “The Pirates and Princesses Treasure Hunt was the perfect way to end our 2015 season,” says Melinda Novak, Co-Owner/ Vice President, Long Island Game Farm - Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo. “The weather was perfect and all of the families seemed
to have a lot of fun. We’re looking forward to hosting the event again next Fall, and we’re excited to reopen in the Spring with even more fun events.” The Long Island Game Farm features interactive animal experiences, where guests can get up-close and personal with their favorite animals. New to the Game Farm this year was the Camel Encounter, where guests hand-fed the camels and learned fun facts from the staff. In addition to camels, guests have always had the chance to hand-feed the LIGF’s resident giraffe, and bottlefeed goats and other baby animals in the nursery. Students from Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent DeMarco’s Criminal Justice Class at Dowling College got a close up view of corrections when they toured the County’s Riverhead Jail this morning. The students met with the County Sheriff in his office and then were escorted through many of the jail’s housing areas, the holding pen, internal intelligence operations, and its specialized units where

correctional staff book and perform iris scans of incoming inmates. The Sheriff’s Office provides tours of the Riverhead Jail for more than a thousand high school and college students each year through its popular Youth Enlightenment Seminar (YES) initiative. The Jail also offers personal YES tours for parents to accompany their at-risk youth to give them a firsthand look at life behind bars.
“These tours give students a realistic view of corrections work and, from a different perspective, what daily life is like for an inmate at the County Jail. You just can’t get this kind of understanding from a TV show or from reading a textbook,” stated DeMarco.
