Harry “Have you ever really had a teacher? One who saw you as a raw but precious thing, a jewel that, with wisdom, could be polished to a proud shine?” ~ Mitch Albom Last week, I was saddened to learn of the passing of a most cherished teacher, mentor and friend, Mr. Elsesser - “Harry” as he signed the yearly Christmas cards we exchanged. They say that some people leave footprints on your heart… this was most certainly true of the man who took me under his wing way back in 4th grade, and helped me to soar to new heights I never thought possible. Up to that point, I had been a fairly good student, conscientious enough in the academic department, but lacking a bit of the “plays well with others” skills that tend to come with time. Seeing this unfulfilled potential, Mr. Elsesser made it his mission to ensure that I would flourish under his watchful eye.

His class was one of those that you find yourself reflecting upon from time to time with a smile, recalling anecdotes and amusing instances, such as when he would entertain us with stories of his travels - to Africa, the Galapagos Islands, Japan, and beyond. Occasionally, there would be touches of Swahili thrown into the vocabulary lesson for good measure. As I entered fifth grade a better all-around student and person, Mr. E. decided to retire after 30 years of teaching in the Lindenhurst school district. Saddened to see him go, and promising to keep in touch, my mother - who had also been a student in the district when Mr. Elsesser began his tenure there started a yearly correspondence, exchanging Christmas cards and keeping each other updated on the happenings in our respective lives. Years later, I took over this tradition and began sending my own correspondence, filling Mr.

E. in on the comings and goings of college and, eventually, my blossoming career. How proud he was to learn that I was utilizing my love of writing and had become a weekly columnist for my old hometown paper. Often, he would call my desk at the office, greeting me with, Is this Miss Jamie Lynn Ryan, the reporter?? We would chat about how work was going, the family, had I seen any of my old classmates lately, what I had for lunch… and always, without fail, as we were getting ready to hang up, he would say, Send hugs and kisses to your parents, and of course to you too. What a wonderful man, and what a treasured friendship, one sustained for over a quarter of a century. On Saturday, September 16th, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez visited Gilgo Beach to thank the scores of dedicated volunteers who participated in the American Littoral Society (ALS) Annual Coastal Clean-Up Effort at Gilgo Beach. The mission of the ALS is to empower programs focused on advocacy, education and conservation of our precious shorelines and beach areas. For the past six years, the town’s

National Honor Society students as well as local residents and beach-goers. Each year, the amount of debris has declined, which reflects the efforts of environmental stewardship by motivated community members and businesses who value our wildlife and the importance of keeping our coastal areas clean and beautiful. All volunteers receive Certificates of Appreciation from Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer for their admirable efforts.

Beautification Program has partnered with the Long Island Beach Access Group (LIBAG) in coordinating the annual event. Under the direction of LIBAG president Ray Erickson, over 280 lbs. of debris was removed and carefully documented by volunteers from PSEGLI, Copiague Target store, Lindenhurst High School Robotics Club, Robert Moses Middle School Environmental Club, Microchip Technologies,

then delved into the basics of free speech in relation to teachers, using numerous well-known case law examples such as Monroe v. Central Bucks School District. “It’s a serious subject,” Lilly told the district’s educators, noting their special position in society. “What you say on the internet can have lasting and serious repercussions. As a teacher who interacts with the public, because of that special position you hold, even when you express things on the internet that for another person might be protected by the Constitution, if your speech is disruptive to the operation of the school

and its ability to provide an important service to the public, the courts say that the school district’s interest in providing that service is going to outweigh the teacher’s interest of expression.” Lilly then suggested some best practices for district employee use of the internet and websites, and urged them to exercise a level of care in using social media, such as not commenting on or befriending students. “These guidelines I’m giving you are to help you avoid anyone ever questioning your integrity or professionalism,” he said.

Long Island Fight for Charity The founders of Long Island Fight for Charity (LIFFC), one of Long Island’s largest and most anticipated charity networking events, recently hosted a Boxer Matchup Reception at SIMPLAY in Hauppauge. Volunteer boxers learned who their opponents are for the 14th Main Event to be held in November. A crowd of over 150 friends, family members, fans, sponsors and committee members gathered at this exciting program and network event. The boxers, after months of preparation, fundraising and training, were anxious to know who they would be facing in the ring at the 14th Main Event which will be held at the Hilton Long Island in Melville on Monday evening, November 21st. The Main Event will feature 10 bouts with boxers who represent the Long Island business community. Boxers will go toe-to-toe on the canvas for three sanctioned rounds. “Our volunteer boxers are entering the home stretch of their training and preparation for the

2017 Main Event. With approximately 7 weeks left before the Main Event on November 20th, our boxers and everyone in our organization will be using the time to make a final push in efforts to raise funds to help our fellow Long Islanders in need. At this point, we can reflect upon our accomplishments over the past year and know our efforts going forward will have a positive impact on each and every one of the individuals, children and families we strive to help; they are the reason why we fight,” said Jamie Austin, co-founder LIFFC. The 14th Long Island Fight for Charity is attracting attention from the media and Long Island’s business community.
