Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple. In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

Soldano and the 50th Anniversary Honorees with a Legislative Resolution commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Constantino Brumidi Lodge. They are actively looking for volunteers in the following areas: Digital Marketing (to help with social media marketing), Scare Team Members (actors to help put on the event), Security (watching over the event and making sure all guests are safe), Bake Team Members (to donate baked goods to sell at some of the events) and lastly, they are looking for an Electrician (to volunteer a few hours to help finalize last minute details for the event). Volunteers must be 16 years of age and volunteer time can count towards community service hours! Sponsorship opportunities are also available. This organization is looking for local businesses to sponsor the event. All sponsors will be listed on their website and will be given the opportunity to have their logo and or a small clip on a big screen at the event in front of the waiting line. This will be on a loop, so there is lots of exposure to be had! Lastly, donations are welcomed at any time on their website. The Cemetery of Lost Souls is a grass roots organization that gears up each year to create an elaborate Haunted House on the founder’s property, located at 350 Broadway in Massapequa Park. E v e r y bit of money raised through their annual event (admission, donations, sponsorships, etc.) is given to a chosen charity. They rely heavily on devoted individuals and community support, as the actors and people who put on the haunt are volunteers. They have raised a lot of money over the years in donations alone and have donated to charities such as Autism Speaks, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Ronald McDonald House Charities and Long Island Cares. This year they will bring the community a new interactive experience with the second Lost Souls Walk-Thru haunt, new rooms, new scares and new thrills! The event will run on October 12, 18-19, 25-26, 31 and November 1-2 from 7PM-11:30PM. The chosen charity for 2019 is Melissa’s Wish, a non-profit organization founded with the purpose of providing short term, non-medical financial aid in the form of a grant to caregivers who are assisting those afflicted with a serious illness, injury or end of life event.

A Deep Sense Of Pride The Deer Park community displayed a deep sense of pride at the district’s Sept. 21 homecoming celebration, beginning with a colorful parade primed by the rousing sounds of the high school’s marching band. Serving as grand marshal was former longtime board of education trustee Keith Rooney. Once inside Al Centamore Football Field, Class of 2020 President Emily DeStefano led the audience in the Pledge of
Allegiance, the women’s choir sang, and Board of Education President Donna Elliott paid tribute to Rooney and his many years of dedicated service. “One of the things we are working on over the next couple of years is bringing a sense of pride back to Deer Park,” said Superintendent James Cummings in his address. “We have a great community and together we’ll make sure everybody knows how great Deer Park is.” Prior to the beginning of
the varsity football game, a Falcons loss to Smithtown East, Deer Park’s kickline and cheerleading teams provided exciting performances to pump up the crowd. Michael Greene was named homecoming king and Julia DiMaio was named homecoming queen. Rounding out the homecoming court were Samantha Giroux, Alex Glancy, Maxwell Hofstetter, Matthew Jacob, Paulina LoGrande and Alexa Skoubas.
