Thanksgiving Food Distribution: The big, special family meal with that big, wonderful bird shouldn’t be a cause for extra financial strain for families in need. Helping Hand Rescue Mission provides Thanksgiving food boxes and turkeys for families so they can cook up their special meal and have it together. In 2020, they served over a thousand families with Thanksgiving food boxes and frozen turkeys that were donated and funded by wonderful churches, businesses, organizations, and families. They believe an enormous part of gratitude is giving back, and they’re so thankful to be able to provide with their community, for their community!
This non-profit was founded in 1965 by Reverend J.A. Gaines, his wife, Reverend Rose Marie Gaines, and her mother, Florence E. Meringola and 56 years later, their work continues under the direction of the founders’ daughter, Rev. Kimberly Gaines-Gambino, who functions as the President/Pastor of this organization. He had made it a priority to visit Pearl Harbor and the Arizona Memorial. As a brother Knight, the Knights of Columbus embodies charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism, and Mike was able to get a Certification of Flag Presentation of the actual flag that is flown over the USS Arizona in remembrance of the 2400 souls that were lost specifically for the Council. Upon Mike’s experience at the Pearl Harbor Memorial and seeing what our servicemen and women’s past, present, and future sacrifice to keep our nation safe, he presented the plaque and flag to Grand Knight Joe Verdicchio at a recent Council Member meeting.

According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed

Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. The next few months are filled with special events that are often celebrated with Mylar balloons. PSEG Long Island is reminding customers that balloons released into the air can become entangled in overhead electric equipment and cause a host of problems. “Safety is PSEG Long Island’s No. 1 priority. That’s why we’re cautioning customers to please hold onto their metallic balloons,” said John O’Connell, PSEG Long Island’s vice president of Transmission and Distribution Operations. “Though they’re festive, fun and look nice, we want the
public to be aware that metallic balloons also conduct electricity. Classmates Both Win Distinguished Youth Award Deer Park High School classmates Emily Franciscovich and Dimitra Pavlatos both recently received gold medals for the Suffolk County Distinguished Youth Award. Deer Park HS Patriot Club Holds 9/11 Memorial Ceremony Deer Park High School’s Patriot Club, led by teacher Laurie Osbern, organized a 9/11 memorial ceremony at the district office on Sept. 10. The event marked the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, in which Deer Park suffered considerable loss of life. In attendance were family members, first responders and others whose lives were impacted on 9/11. “Today we are here to fulfill the promise of the mantra, ‘Never forget,’” said Principal Charles Cobb. “We will honor those of the Deer Park
community who are no longer with us.” “For the kids up here who were not born yet, I think it’s very important that we continue to teach about that day and the sacrifice that many of our men and women made, so that we can keep their memory alive,” said Superintendent James Cummings. “I am forever grateful to every service member that lost their lives on that day. As a citizen of the United States, I thank them, I respect them, I honor them. I’m proud to say that I’m an American,
that I live in New York and that I work in Deer Park, a community that was hit very hard by 9/11. I thank the kids of Deer Park High School for putting this together. It means so much to the community members whose lives were affected on that day.” Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly was also in attendance, reading aloud the more than a dozen names of each of the Deer Park first responders who lost their lives on 9/11. “Many of these residents had also come through the Deer Park school
system, so I’m pretty sure they’re looking down and students for remembering that it’s safe to say that very grateful for these them.”

Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum Hosts First Lantern Lighting Celebration Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum, known for its exceptionally beautiful grounds and worldclass arboreta, hosted its first Lantern Lighting Celebration for families to honor deceased loved ones. The celebration, which included two events on Saturday, August 21 and Tuesday, August 24, were held for families to remain connected to loved ones after they have passed. Invited as a guest speaker at the celebration was Reverend Lamonte S. Granby, Pastor of the First Baptist Church in Bronxville. Reverend Granby, who recently spoke at Pinelawn’s Spring Candlelight Remembrance Vigil, shared his thoughts on carrying those we love in our hearts. “It’s very important for families to continue to feel connected with their loved ones, even after they pass,”
said Kristyn Hovanec, Marketing Manager, Pinelawn. “Today, people tend to live very hectic lives, so we are happy to be able to host events so that families can take a pause to reconnect and honor those they’ve lost.” During the events, attended by over 400 people, guests received complimentary floating lanterns which they personalized and decorated, and then released within Pinelawn’s Rose Garden Fountain as their loved one’s name was read aloud under the beauty of string lights and the soothing sounds of a live acoustic guitar and violin duo. Guests were also treated to food and invited to walk among the park’s vibrant rose garden labyrinth. Pinelawn events are offered free of charge to its families and the public.
