with Jamie Lynn Ryan Autumn’s Eve the television as many of our favorite shows return from hiatus. That baseball season which once seemed endless on opening day in April is now nearing its final stretch, as playoff pictures begin to take shape. All this, while football season takes over, and each Sunday’s activities become dictated by the game schedule of your favorite team. Soon enough, all roads heading eastward will be jammed with traffic as the masses scramble to take advantage of each beautiful autumn weekend. Pumpkin picking, apple picking, hayrides, corn mazes… so much to accomplish in so little time. And yet, there is always precisely the same amount of time. It’s all in how we choose to use it. A good family friend of mine recently commented that we all tend to live as though we have this list of obligations
to complete, rather than taking a step back and simply experiencing each moment as it happens. There is very little we actually have to do; in fact, almost nothing is required within a particular time frame. And so, we can afford to relax a bit, to take our time transitioning, whether it is from one season to the next or something larger and more significant to our personal lives. So, while the calendar may indicate autumn just a few days from now, that doesn’t mean we need to give up enjoying the warmth of the sun, or throw away our remaining summer plants in favor of mums and pumpkins. All in good time. Autumn is a season of transition in itself, a cross-section of weather and activities, even fashion. A season of plenty. Plenty to appreciate. Plenty to embrace. Plenty to enjoy.
Students from across the Deer Park School District got a great start on the year on September 5th as the schools opened for the first day of learning. “We were so thrilled to see such happy and excited students on day one of school,” said Robert Frost Middle School Principal Eliana Levey. “We’re looking forward to a phenomenal year.” “Students arrived on the first day of school ready to learn,” said John F. Kennedy Intermediate School Principal Susan Bonner. “They were
eager to enter the building and get started with the new school year. We are looking forward to many great times, adventures and learning experiences this year.” “We are so happy to have the halls and classrooms filled with students again and are eager to begin another year full of engaging activities,” said John Quincy Adams Primary School Principal Christopher Molinelli. “It was exciting to welcome our new pre-K and kindergarten students as well as our returning firstand second-graders,” said
May Moore Primary School Principal Alicia M. Konecny. “Our teachers and support staff are eager to challenge our students to learn and accomplish great things – this is where we continue to develop the skills that build a strong foundation for learning.” “I loved the first day of school because I have new teachers and I enjoyed writing and labeling our new supplies,” said May Moore first-grader Francesca Lathrop. “I think it’s going to be a great year.”

And with that, summer’s final swan song is upon us, as the autumnal air seems to have taken up residence across this long island that we call home. Some will say the summer months flew by in the blink of an eye; others will say they dragged on unbearably. How drastic are the differences in perception from one person to another. It’s funny how things seem to move in fast forward once the school year gets underway. Halloween decorations have been out in full force for weeks, with Christmas not far behind. That spring cleaning that we’ve been putting off until fall is now begging for our attention. As the leaves begin to turn, can outdoor cleanups be far behind as well? In the entertainment world, gone are the evenings of summer concerts under the stars, replaced instead by nights spent in front of

Navaretta and her agents kicked off their collection drive by first making contributions themselves and are now encouraging the Long Island community to join them in donating nonperishable food items and paper goods to help people in Texas who are facing overwhelming loss and destruction. “I believe we all have a responsibility to be mindful of what is happening around our country and of those in need,” says Navaretta. “What happened in Texas hit home for so many of us as it could have happened to any of us here on Long Island. Whether we have loved ones living in Texas or not, we as human beings need to extend our help and support for others in need in whatever way possible. We invite Long Island residents to make donations to our collection drive so we can extend a helping hand for those in Texas who have lost so much as they begin
their long road to recovery. Welcoming the future Class of 2021, Deer Park High School held its freshman orientation on August 30th, providing the new ninth-graders a chance to familiarize themselves with teachers, guidance counselors and administrators. After an address by Senior Class
President Alan Korsiak, upperclassmen gave the younger students tours of the building and spoke to them about what a typical day at the high school is like. “This was a perfect opportunity for our incoming freshmen to start to experience
the many wonderful activities that Deer Park High School offers our students,” said Principal Charles Cobb. “It’s a great event that signified the end of summer break and let us look forward to the upcoming school year.”
