Commemorating The Lives Lost During The 2001 Terrorist Attacks Each September 11, communities across the United States commemorate the lives lost during the 2001 terrorist attacks that took place on American soil. On September 11, 2001, four commercial airplanes were hijacked and sent to various targets in the United States. Two planes crashed into the towers of the World Trade Center in New York

City, one plane crashed into the U.S. Pentagon Building near Washington, D.C., and a fourth plane was intercepted from the hijackers and crashlanded in rural Pennsylvania. In the immediate aftermath of the attacks, President George W. Bush declared Friday, September 14, 2001 as a National Day of Prayer and Remembrance for the Victims of the terrorist attacks, but

many people felt there should be an annual event dedicated to preserving the memory of the victims and the heroism of the first responders. A bill to make September 11 a national day of mourning was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives on October 25, 2001. The bill passed the Senate unanimously. On September 11, 2002, the country recognized the
first Patriot Day. On this day, the U.S. flag is flown at halfmast. In addition, a moment of silence beginning at 8:46 a.m. is observed to correspond with the attacks. While not a federal holiday — schools and businesses remain open — memorial ceremonies are held for the 2,977 victims, including an annual reading of names of the people who lost their lives.

September 11, 2001, was a tragic day in American history. On that day, nearly 3,000 innocent lives were lost due to the terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C. as well as in rural Pennsylvania, where another plane en route for more destruction crashlanded. The indelible images of the World Trade Center collapsing in flames with crowds running for safety, as well as the ensuing visions of heroes and citizens working together, have created a lasting impression.
While buildings have been repaired and new sites erected in the wake of the attacks, there are many ways to continue to honor the fallen. Patriot Day, which takes place each year on September 11 to honor those who lost their lives in the 9-11 attacks, is one such example. The following are a handful of ways that people can honor 9-11 victims and their families. • Celebrate local heroes by visiting or making donations of food or supplies to local firehouses and police stations.

Bank Of America Connects Long Island-Area Youth To Workforce Success Celebrating the 17th year of its Student Leaders program, Bank of America today announced that the five Long Island high school juniors and seniors selected as Student Leaders (#BofAStudentLeaders) have completed their paid summer internship experience of leadership, civic engagement, and workforce skills-building. In light of the health concerns that remain in local communities, the program was adapted to a virtual format, through which students had the opportunity to participate in sessions that exposed them to the vital role that nonprofits play in advancing community health, the importance of public private partnerships to advance social change, and a focus on building financial acumen. The Class of 2020 Long Island based Bank of America Student Leaders are: · Anjali Aggarwal, a Levittown resident and rising senior at W. Long Island Student Leaders participated in programming that leveraged Bank of America’s national partnerships and expertise and worked closely with the bank’s Long Island leadership and nonprofit partners. They participated in a collaborative, mentoringfocused project working closely with United Way of Long Island, Family Service League, and the EAC Network to continue the nonprofits’ missions and help Long Island’s most vulnerable populations. In addition, Student Leaders engaged in conversations focused on social justice, civil rights and how to build a more diverse and inclusive society and have the opportunity to gain a
better understanding of their personal finances through Better Money Habits®, Bank of America’s financial wellness and education platform. The United Way of Long Island and Bank of America have a longstanding partnership. The nonprofit was recently awarded coronavirus relief grant funding to increase capacity and access to their urgently needed community services and has mentored Student Leaders in previous years. “We at the United Way value our relationship with Bank of America and it is an honor to work with their Student Leaders. We have hosted Student Leaders since 2007 and admire their dedication to making a difference in our communities,” said Theresa A. Regnante, president and CEO of United Way of Long Island. “Although we are not working together in person this year, we had a successful summer
of building upon their leadership skills and learning from one another.” Bringing students from across the country together in order to discuss the role of citizenship and how cross sector collaboration creates community impact is a core component of the Student Leaders program. This year, 300 students gathered virtually for the Young America Together at Home program, delivered by the Close Up Foundation, which included discussion of finding one’s voice in order to effect change and pressing policy issues such as the economy, healthcare, the environment and immigration. “As a life-long resident of Long Island, I am consistently inspired by the impact our local Student Leaders have on their communities,” said Bob Isaksen, Long Island market president for Bank of America. “I’m happy to have welcomed our five newest students

It is imperative that we continue creating opportunities for our youth to gain skills and build networks that will guide them to make meaningful change in our community.” Now in particular, in the wake of significant job losses nationwide, the ability to earn a paycheck will be essential to many young people whether they are helping to support their families or planning for the future. As part of their Student Leader experience, each student received a $5,000 stipend to recognize them for their community achievements.
Recent estimates suggest that the number of disconnected youth – those who aren’t in school and don’t have a job – has likely tripled since last year and could be as high as 18 million. Without access to opportunities that build career skills, many young people may be left behind, leading to high rates of youth unemployment and hindering overall economic progress. In addition to Student Leaders, the bank invests in summer jobs for young people through its partnership with 40 summer youth employees working remotely across the Long Island market. This summer, Bank of America is connecting approximately 3,000 young adults to summer jobs through partnerships with nonprofits and local mayors and its own Student Leaders® program.
Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.
The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad cholesterol
(LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the risk
of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to be potent
weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important for women, given that heart disease kills
more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

Deer Park Grads Overcome Adversity To Celebrate Their Achievement Showing pride and community spirit in the face of adversity, Deer Park High School’s Class of 2020 graduated at last in the school’s 57th commencement, divided into six sessions over July 30 and 31. After students and parents assembled at the football field, socially distanced for safety, Morgan Laissle led the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a speech from Senior Class President Emily DeStefano. “Although this ceremony is not what we imagined, it still symbolizes how far we’ve come,” DeStefano said. “Despite what was thrown our way, we figured out how to rise above it. We are now the class graduating during a pandemic, but the Class of 2020 is so much more than that. We know what it’s like for our lives to change unexpectedly, but throughout it all, we held our heads high, finished with a smile, and now we are starting our own lives with determination. Remember to never give up, never stop believing in yourself and live every day like it’s your last.” “This pandemic didn’t stop us,” said salutatorian Zubaer Mohiuddin. “Our generation stayed positive and invented new and creative ways to get around our problems. We didn’t let that flame inside us burn
out. We made the best of it. This upcoming year will be different. It’s already a big step to be moving on after high school into a new environment, but on top of that, we have to adapt to this new way of life due to the pandemic. But I know that this will not be a setback for us.” Valedictorian Sameer Riaz discussed the concepts of opportunity, privilege and responsibility. “Not everyone has the opportunity to graduate from high school and make it this far,” he said. “We did it, and yet we still take time to thank those who made this possible, because we know that there are so many people who put effort into moving us along our journey. So, when you’re congratulated a million times today, accept it, because you deserve it. Be proud of yourself for making it to the end of the path.” Superintendent James Cummings told the new graduates, “If you’ve learned a lesson from this, you’ve learned how to overcome and how to make sacrifices, and then how to care for other people and maybe think about other people before yourselves. As you move on from this ceremony, you don’t want to be defined by the disappointment of the way your senior year ended, you want to think back to the first 11-and-a-half
years and the great times you had, the great friends you made, and the position you put yourself in to make a difference in the world. That’s what life is about: Making sure that anything that comes your way, you learn from it, you figure out how to overcome it, you make yourself better, and help other people be better.” “With all that has occurred, by no means has this diminished all your accolades, who you are as individuals or how you are viewed as the Class of 2020,” said Principal Charles Cobb. “It has shown that you are a group of young adults who are resilient in your constant pursuit of excellence, and you have been able to handle these adverse situations with the utmost poise and professionalism that is usually displayed by those with much more experience. You will be remembered as the Class of 2020 that have overcome these obstacles, and moved forward to ensure that all your goals are met. For that, I and the staff of Deer Park High School are most proud of you.” Following Cobb’s words of praise, diplomas were conferred and tassels turned at each of the six joyful ceremonies, and the Class of 2020 embarked on their next step of their educational journey.

The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Awareness of the treatments available is key to beating it.
As like many other nonprofit organizations, the WIBCC holds various fundraising events throughout the year to gain awareness and collect funds in support of their mission. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program. Town of Babylon Community Development Block Grant Funding Now Available to Town of Babylon Residents for Home Improvements Community Development Corporation of Long Island (CDCLI), on behalf of the Town of Babylon, is accepting applications from Town of Babylon residents for their Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Home Improvement Program. This program provides deferred payment loans (zero percent interest) to qualified low and moderate income homeowners in the Town of Babylon in order to improve housing conditions and correct housing code violations by repairing and rehabilitating health and safety hazards, including lead-based paint removal. Eligible Home Repairs / Improvements can include, but are not limited to, electrical improvements, accessibility improvements, insulation and energy conservation measures, new heating systems, new roofs, new windows and doors, plumbing, structural improvements and vinyl siding. Maximum income limits will apply when assessing program eligibility. Program Guidelines may be reviewed at www.cdcli.org. A fully completed application, together with all supporting documentation, must be submitted.
