Most of us reading this column have memories of Hurricane Sandy, and many people are still rebuilding from it all.

As we watch the terrible devastation of Hurricane Harvey in Texas, we feel so much compassion for all who have been affected by this disaster - the pictures and stories have been unbelievable.

It reminds us all that we are all subject to events and circumstances in our lives that are unexpected, and out of our control. We should always be ready to help people in need.

As was true here with Sandy, it is amazing how people, organizations and companies have helped by volunteering their time, energy, resources and money. The outpouring of compassion has been, and continues to be, amazing. It reminds us all that, even during this

Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor and Councilman Tony Martinez and Councilman Tom Donnelly recently presented Deer Park resident James Boss with an official Certificate of Appreciation. Boss has organized three music festivals in honor of Sue Marchetti, a late family friend and nextdoor neighbor, who lost her battle with pancreatic cancer in 2014. All proceeds from the concerts were donated to the Lustgarten

Foundation to help combat the disease. Receiver of Taxes Corinne DiSomma was also in attendance for the presentation. Supervisor Schaffer commended Boss for his successful efforts in organizing the event and wished him luck with his future plans before the presentation at Town Hall in Lindenhurst. Boss, 20, is entering his senior year as a music industry major at SUNY Oneonta. The three festivals, dubbed “Susiepalooza,” have raised

over $16,000 for charity in total. Each lineup has featured a slew of rock bands, with this year’s including 12 acts. Some acts were local, while others traveled distances from Michigan and Canada. The show takes place in the backyards of the two family’s residences in Deer Park. After his time at Oneonta, Boss hopes to organize more music-related events professionally, as well as work in the music publicity field.

Beach Blast Fun Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer invited residents to Overlook Beach on Saturday, August 19th, for the Town’s annual Beach Blast. The event featured live music, raffles for charity, rides, games and even an ice cream-eating contest. The weather made for a picture-perfect day for the Beach Blast this year.

Beachgoers lined Overlook for a late-summer visit to the ocean and pitched tents, stuck umbrellas in the sand and of course took a swim in the water. The Town of Babylon lifeguard staff helped keep everyone safe while enjoying the waves. Over twenty children competed in this year’s ice-cream eating contest as they were cheered on by friends,

family and other residents. Winners were awarded by age group. After dark, the festivities concluded with a fireworks display, a staple of the Beach Blast. Residents looked up and enjoyed the colorful display, which served as a proper sendoff to the 2017 summer season.
