The Charity of the Month for September is: The Twilight Wish Foundation www.twilightwish.org
and respects our senior population. Twilight Wish recipients report that having their wish granted impacted their life for the better. Their mental and physical health often improved, positively changing their outlook on life! The wishes that this organization grants truly changes the way that our society views aging, as it witnesses seniors living life to the fullest. By sharing their recipients’ stories, they inspire both older and younger generations and help bring about a cultural shift in how aging is perceived in our society. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,000 wishes throughout our country, ranging from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross country in a tractor trailer truck. This Foundation has expanded throughout America and they currently have 17 chapters. The majority of their chapter directors and chapter volunteers have full-time jobs, but volunteer their time because they believe so much in the impact Twilight Wish has on our senior population. They are presently looking to expand their outreach to seniors by making our business and community leaders/charitable organizations aware of who they are. The Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight W i s h celebrations. Senior citizens are the fastest growing population in the world. The number of Americans who are 65 and older is projected to more than double to over 98 million by 2060. In the United States today, 1 in 3 seniors older than 65 live alone and the number of seniors living alone only increases with age. Many of these seniors experience social isolation, which can lead to undesirable conditions. Granting a Twilight Wish can help change that! You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive, emotional and physical ability to experience the wish. Students dedicate themselves to completing requirements in two, three or all four categories for Bronze, Silver or Gold recognition, respectively. Each category can require up to 100 or more hours of activity that must be logged and certified. In addition, students complete personal interviews in the Legislator’s office at the onset of the program and then at the completion. The program is open to all Suffolk County Youths between the ages of 13 and 18. Walt Whitman High School in the South Huntington School District had the most award recipients in the program with ten: Armany Alfaro (Gold), Nicolas Allain (Gold), Pamela Carey (Bronze), Samantha Carey (Bronze), Sindy Alvarez Garay (Gold), Ethan Halle (Gold), Oscar Armando Hernandez (Gold), Alyssa Katwala (Silver), Priya Katwala (Gold) and Katherine
Miata (Gold). Other local youths who earned DYAs were: Ashley Beck (Gold) and Oyin Olukoya (Gold) from North Babylon High School; Gianna Tantillo (Silver) from Half Hollow Hills High School East; Daniel Thompson (Gold) from Robert Frost Middle School in Deer Park; and, from St. John the Baptist High School in West Islip, Max Wenzel (Gold). “I commend all of these remarkable students for their commitment and enthusiasm,” said Legislator Donnelly. “They demonstrated initiative in embarking on the program and dedication in sticking with it to completion. Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Huntington Station) recently honored 15 local students as Gold, Silver and Bronze recipients of the Suffolk County Legislature’s Distinguished Youth Award (DYA). Earning the awards after completion of an extensive year-long program, they were each recognized with medals and certificates in a special ceremony at the Suffolk County Legislature’s William H. Rogers Building in Hauppauge. A record number of students in Legislator Donnelly’s district completed the extensive DYA requirements in this second year of the program. A total of 31 Suffolk students earned awards, with nearly half of them, the largest representation ever, from Legislative District 17. The DYA program was created by the Legislative Resolution Number 4192017. The voluntary recognition program centers on four categories: Volunteer Service, Personal Development, Exploration and Physical Fitness and focuses on a holistic

A Captivating Carnival A captivating carnival and acts of kindness initiative closed out the last two days of Deer Park’s summer school program on Aug. 15 and 16. The carnival included fun-filled activities, using
fine and gross motor skills, including face painting, beading, coloring, ring and bean bag tosses, potato sack races, a bubbles station, hula hooping and bowling. On the final day, students watched a video of
themselves documenting their time in the six-week program and enjoyed ice cream. They also received certificates and bracelets for exemplary behavior in the district’s new acts of kindness initiative.

It’s almost time for back-to-school! Packing the kids’ lunches for school means you have control over which foods they are eating. Parents can manage nutritious meals even when the kids are at school. According to the American Heart Association, American kids consume 35-50 percent of their daily calories while in school. So, healthy lunches can have a big impact on children’s health through good nutrition. Today, about one in three American kids and teens is overweight or obese, nearly triple the rate in
1963. Among children today, obesity is causing a broad range of health problems that previously weren’t seen until adulthood. These include high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and elevated blood cholesterol levels. Nutrition can go a long way toward preventing these illnesses in children. Here are some budgetfriendly, creative ideas from the American Heart Association to help keep kids happy and healthy at lunchtime: Make a Smarter Sandwich While some kids prefer

New ELA Curriculum Associate The Deer Park School District has hired Justin Uliano as the district’s new curriculum associate for ELA, reading and library in grades 6-12, replacing Michelle Kwon. He comes to Deer Park from the Amityville School District, where he served as ELA department chairperson for the last year. He previously worked for three years as English, ELA and library department chair for Sewanhaka High
School, and for 16 years as an English teacher in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District. Uliano, who resides in Sunnyside, Queens, earned a double bachelor’s degree in English and anthropology from Stony Brook University, a master’s of science in education degree from Queens College, school building and district leader certificates from the College of Saint Rose,
and an advanced certificate in teaching literacy from birth to grade 6 from Mercy College. “I am really pleased to be able to make a home in such a terrific school community as Deer Park, and I look forward to supporting this talented teaching staff as we all continue to grow and adapt to the ever-changing needs of our kids and our schools,” Uliano said.
