Essay Recognized Deer Park High School student Julianna Caputo, a rising junior, was recently honored by Gilda’s Club New York City for an essay she submitted about her mother’s recovery from cancer. The organization, founded in 1995 and named in tribute to actress Gilda Radner, who died of ovarian cancer in 1989, provides free support to
people living with cancer and their families and friends. Although Caputo was not a finalist in the essay contest, her work was recognized at Gilda’s Club seventh annual teen essay contest reception, where she was awarded a certificate and four tickets to this year’s Summer Jam concert.

Richard Monsey, an Eagle Scout and June graduate of Deer Park High School’s Class of 2016, recently built and donated a “Buddy Bench” for the playground at the district’s May Moore Primary School. According to May Moore Principal Alicia Konecny, the project was suggested
by Monsey’s mother, who worked for many years at the school’s cafeteria and supervised its students at recess. “We are so grateful to Richard for creating this beautiful bench,” said Konecny. “It’s a terrific addition to our playground and a wonderful way for

students to make friends and find a playmate at recess. It is nice to learn that a recent Deer Park graduate is giving back to his community and helping many children in the years to come, through the planning, building and installation of this project.”
Students in Heather Ciurleo’s life skills classes at Deer Park’s John F. Kennedy Intermediate School recently gained experience by taking the Long Island Rail Road from Babylon to Sayville. Many of the students had never been on a
train before, but enjoyed purchasing tickets, waiting for the train and meeting a conductor, followed by lunch at a pizzeria after the train arrived in Sayville. Before the outing, Ciurleo created a social story about what to expect on the train, such as rules

and the sights and sounds they might encounter. When the class arrived back at school, students worked to answer questions about the trip, including what they saw, who they met, what they heard and what they ate for lunch.

This selection, chosen by a WFLI committee, will be based on women’s nominations of Stand Up Guys.
