Girl Scout Cadette Cristina Cairo from Deer Park Troop 1163 decided to do her Silver Award project in coordination with Paws of War. She chose this organization to partner with because she is passionate about dog rescue and adoption and has a high respect for military personnel and the sacrifices that they make for our country and
freedom. Cristina built a wood table that comes apart for easy transport, as seen in the picture. This table will be donated to Paws of War for their meetings, with Veterans and their dogs, in Nesconset. The table will be used for seating at these meetings and can also be used at different fundraising events that the organization takes part in

Meet Your Neighbor! Vic D’Amore’s American Studio of Performing Arts
Mr. Vic D’Amore’s career started in a most unusual way, with an affliction... His feet… They are always tapping. While in ninth grade at St. Agnes High School, Sister Mary Mercy noticed a young man whose feet seemed to be in perpetual motion. She called it an affliction. Vic mentioned that he danced, and Sister Mercy dragged him off to see Ray and Davenie Heatherton. (For those of you not old enough to recognize the name, he was the Merry Mailman on TV.) Vic was now thrown into the theater department and, by his junior year, was asked by Mr. Heatherton to choreograph the high school show. By his senior year, he was asked to choreograph and direct it.
in California. They have been to numerous competitions, which are and were always attached to workshops, because education comes before medals. Because of that belief in education first, there have been many medals won by the Vic D’Amore Dancers through the years.
Mr. D’Amore has also been the Past President of Dance Educators of America and its Executive Director, and is a member of Stage Directors and Choreographers. This gives him a unique perspective on dance competitions, as does being the Artistic Director of the Vic D’Amore Musical Theater/Triple Threat program that was started in the studio over 10 years ago While in the army, he also joined a band that became known - something that no other studio can duplicate! as the Mauroks, and when he left service in 1968, the song Susan climbed to the top of the music charts to #3 ahead of the Countless students have been through his studio door; many Beatles. The stories that unfold in the space of a writer’s study, the objects chosen to watch over a desk, the books selected to sit on the shelves, all weave a web of echoes and reflections of meanings and affections, that lend a visitor the illusion that something of the owner of this space lives on between these walls, even if the owner is no more. {Alberto Manguel} From the day I began working at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers some 13-plus years ago, my desk and the meticulousness with which I chose to decorate, maintain and arrange it has been a topic of some fascination among my coworkers, the joke being that if someone dared to move a pencil or paper clip even a fraction of an inch, I would notice immediately. While this may be a bit extreme, the characterization is pretty darn close. I have always subscribed to the mantra of “a place for everything, and everything in its place,” mostly because I felt the sense of
organization allowed me to better focus on the {many} tasks at hand in the fast-paced, deadlinedriven environment of a weekly publication. Folders and filing systems aside, though, the true character is represented by the many knick-knacks and personal touches which accent my area. Only now, as I prepare to pack up my belongings at the close of the month {a task I intend to put off until the very last moment, as we can’t have things looking “empty” for even a day}, have I really taken the time to appreciate all the memories associated with these special tokens accumulated through the years. There is the mug given to me by my mentor and very special friend Peter, who saw fit to take me under his wing from day one and gently nudge me into the spotlight with what would become the makings of this very column. There is the silk floral arrangement from my Mom, with the hand-written note, “A little touch of springtime for your desk, along with wishes for many happy days at your new
job,” a fixture from the very beginning. There is the photo of my friend Rose on our very first trip to Adventureland, her face a mixture of exhilaration and horror, as we careened down the famous log flume, holding on for dear life. And of course, there is the framed plate of my 500th column, published on March 11th, 2015, a testament to the longevity I never imagined I or the column - would achieve when I set foot in our old office on May 2nd, 2005. One move and another small renovation later, the layout of my desk and office space may have changed, but the memories have traveled with me, giving rise to many new ones made along the way. In just a few short weeks, the desk will be empty, the personal touches gone for good, relegated to a storage box in the back seat of my car for a time - until a better, more permanent home can be found. Things, as we know, are replaceable. It is the stories behind them which live on forever.

The Sons and Daughters of Italy in America, Constantino Brumidi Lodge No. 2211 in Deer Park recently held their annual Our Lady of Mount Carmel Memorial Mass in honor of their deceased members for the 2017 to 2018 fraternal year.
The Mass was held at Ss. Cyril & Methodius RC Church in Deer Park on July 22nd, 2018 at 11:00am. Msgr. Robert J. Clerkin, Pastor celebrated the Mass for the Lodge Members. Members processed in and out of the Church with
the Statue of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. Deceased member’s names were read from the pulpit while a red flower was placed in a vase in their memory. A reception was held after the Mass back at the Lodge.
