JFK STUDENTS TAKE CHARGE OF SCHOOL STORE - Heather Buksa’s life skills class was put in charge of running the school store at Deer Park’s John F. Kennedy Intermediate School this past school year. Aided by members of JFK’s Student Government Club, Buksa’s students decorated and ordered items for the store while working on their functional math skills and practicing role playing in the classroom. The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation. This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island. The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology departments, Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead and St. Joseph’s College. Survivors from all over Long Island are welcome to get involved with The Social Brain. On average, each event they host has about 30-40 participates and there is no age restrictions.
Recently a 4-week session hosted by The Social Brain and Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead started to help survivors learn social skills, build friendships, find cues from others and interact with peers. The first session was on August 6th and the following 2 sessions will be on August 20th and 27th. Age groups are broken down from ages 5-7, 8-12, teens and adults. Additionally, in only two days (on August 16th), The Social Brain will host a “Basket Night Fundraiser” at the Sound Beach Property Owners Association at 6:30PM! This will be fun night with 250 plus baskets and prizes being raffled off; top raffles include brand new bicycles from Walmart and an overnight stay at Gurney’s in Montauk. All are welcome to attend! If you bring school supplies to be donated, you will receive a single raffle ticket for each item you donate. Each student was presented with an official Town of Babylon Proclamation for their commitment to our country.

Mr. Vic D’Amore’s career started in a most unusual way, with an affliction... His feet… They are always tapping. While in ninth grade at St. Agnes High School, Sister Mary Mercy noticed a young man whose feet seemed to be in perpetual motion. She called it an affliction. Vic mentioned that he danced, and Sister Mercy dragged him off to see Ray and Davenie Heatherton. (For those of you not old enough to recognize the name, he was the Merry Mailman on TV.) Vic was now thrown into the theater department and, by his junior year, was asked by Mr. Heatherton to choreograph the high school show. By his senior year, he was asked to choreograph and direct it.

Mr. D’Amore has also been the Past President of Dance Educators of America and its Executive Director, and is a member of Stage Directors and Choreographers. This gives him a unique perspective on dance competitions, as does being the Artistic Director of the Vic D’Amore Musical Theater/Triple Threat program that was started in the studio over 10 years ago While in the army, he also joined a band that became known - something that no other studio can duplicate! as the Mauroks, and when he left service in 1968, the song Susan climbed to the top of the music charts to #3 ahead of the Countless students have been through his studio door; many Beatles.
