Make A Wish By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s that special time of year again – well, special to me – three days until my birthday, the so-called “reset button” that comes around once every 365 days to remind me that, yes, I am one entire year older and (hopefully) just a little wiser. Some people seem to dread such milestones, seeing them as unnecessary celebrations, just another day on the calendar to cast aside. Of course, there are also those who feel the occasion should be acknowledged as some sort of national holiday… Me, I

fall somewhere in between. It’s certainly nice to receive phone calls and text messages and Facebook greetings from those you seldom talk to otherwise, as well as to take the time to get together with family and close friends to celebrate. Why not? We spend more than enough of our time going through the motions of the daily grind. We deserve at least that much of a reprieve. As for getting older, age is, truly, nothing but a number. It’s a state of mind, dependent upon the person, the day of the week, the phase of the moon… and, considering I’ve been

Stony Brook University broke ground recently on Phase I of the new 759-room student housing facilities and 60,000-square-foot dining center located on Toll Drive. Scheduled to be completed by fall 2016, the new development will offer additional residential options for upperclassman, and bring the total oncampus housing inventory to more than 10,300 beds, making Stony Brook University the largest campus housing program in SUNY. For Malachi Keaton, a fifth-grader in Marie Finley’s class at Deer Park’s John F. Kennedy Intermediate School, the face on the video screen was a truly special surprise. School was ending, and Keaton was preparing for summer and the move up to Robert Frost Middle School as a virtual visitor came to the class’s computer lab. It was his father, Terrance, a specialist with the Army National Guard serving overseas. In Kuwait, the elder Keaton is attached to part of an aviation support battalion. When at home, he is stationed in

Ronkonkoma near Long Island MacArthur Airport, keeping UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters flying safely and ready for civilian emergencies. Father and son had not seen each other in six months, when Terrance was last in the U.S. attending parent-teacher conferences at JFK, although they had been communicating via mail. During the school year, Finley’s class had been pen pals with Terrance Keaton and his troop and sent them care packages. During the soldier’s brief window of availability, a Skype videoconference session was arranged,

The grant will assist the NYSCF in its continuing research into finding a cure for Alzheimer’s disease using manufactured stem cells. The grant came from part of an anonymous donation that ADRC recently received. This was the second research study the organization has funded. On June 26, ADRC presented a check in the amount of $3,000 to Dr. Irving H. Gomolin, Chief, Division of Geriatric Medicine, Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola for his study on how the removal of Namenda from the marketplace and the use of its substitute - an extended release formulation - will impact the blood levels of patients with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. The New York Stem Cell Foundation (NYSCF) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to accelerate cures for major diseases through stem cell research. NYSCF focuses on translational research in a model designed to overcome the barriers that slow discovery. AP Scholars Recognized The College Board has recognized 77 Deer Park High School students as AP Scholars for 2013, an increase of nine since last year.
