Mr. Vic D’Amore’s career started in a most unusual way, with an affliction... His feet… They are always tapping. While in ninth grade at St. Agnes High School, Sister Mary Mercy noticed a young man whose feet seemed to be in perpetual motion. She called it an affliction. Vic mentioned that he danced, and Sister Mercy dragged him off to see Ray and Davenie Heatherton. (For those of you not old enough to recognize the name, he was the Merry Mailman on TV.) Vic was now thrown into the theater department and, by his junior year, was asked by Mr. Heatherton to choreograph the high school show. By his senior year, he was asked to choreograph and direct it.

Mr. D’Amore has also been the Past President of Dance Educators of America and its Executive Director, and is a member of Stage Directors and Choreographers. This gives him a unique perspective on dance competitions, as does being the Artistic Director of the Vic D’Amore Musical Theater/Triple Threat program that was started in the studio over 10 years ago While in the army, he also joined a band that became known - something that no other studio can duplicate! as the Mauroks, and when he left service in 1968, the song Susan climbed to the top of the music charts to #3 ahead of the Countless students have been through his studio door; many Beatles. Video Scholarship Contest The Pedestrian Education Video Scholarship Competition is offered by the New York State Coalition for Transportation Safety. The competition is part of the Walk Safe Long Island campaign organized by the Long Island Health Collaborative in partnership with the Coalition and health and safety educators from across Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Some Long Island communities have a particularly poor driving record and are among the worst in the state. When New York State communities were rank-ed by the number
of pedestrian crashes that occurred between 2009 and 2013, Long Island communities accounted for eight of the top twenty communities ranked, and Hempstead had the highest number of crashes of all communities in upstate New York and Long Island. Other ranked communities included Brookhaven (number 7), Islip (number 8), Oyster Bay (number 9), N. Hempstead (number 10), Babylon (number 11), Huntington (number 14), and Freeport (number 19). The Charity of the Month for August is: The Social Brain www.facebook.com/socialbrainny
The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation. This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island. The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology departments, Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead and St. Joseph’s College. Survivors from all over Long Island are welcome to get involved with The Social Brain. On average, each event they host has about 30-40 participates and there is no age restrictions. Recently a 4-week session hosted by The Social Brain and Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead started to help survivors learn social skills, build friendships, find cues from others and interact with peers. The first session was on August 6th and the following 3 sessions will be on August 13th, 20th and 27th. Age groups are broken down from ages 5-7, 8-12, teens and adults. information. On August 16th at 6:30PM, The Social Brain is hosting a “Basket Night Fundraiser” at the Sound Beach Property Owners Association. This will be fun night with 250 plus baskets and prizes being raffled off; top raffles include brand new bicycles from Walmart and an overnight stay at Gurney’s in Montauk. All are welcome to attend! If you bring school supplies to be donated, you will receive a single raffle ticket for each item you donate. Additionally, on September 22nd all are welcome to come support this organization and enjoy an afternoon out at the ballpark with family and friends! The Social Brain is hosting a day at the ballpark to watch the Long Island Ducks game at 1:35PM. Tickets are $15.00 a person and parking is free. There will be a pre-game autograph session with all players on the field and children will be able to run the bases post game. Lastly, the Social Brain is available to attend group meetings to speak about head injury prevention. Topics can include mental health prevention, drug abuse, bike/wheeled safety, sport safety, concussions, anti-bullying and asking for help when needed. They will prepare your speech based on age group and your needs. More than 30 Suffolk County teenagers earned medals of honor at the Legislature’s 2019 Distinguished Youth Award ceremony, marking the second year of the program aimed at engaging local youth. For the 31 medal recipients, the July 17 ceremony at the William H. Rogers Legislature Building in Hauppauge celebrated their completion of the yearlong Distinguished Youth Award program, through which youth ages 13 to 18 work with local officials and mentors, connect with their communities, and set and work toward goals for their own personal development. Participants are awarded a medal based on the number of categories they complete. A bronze medal is awarded to participants who complete two of the four program areas, while a silver medal is awarded to individuals who complete three of the four areas.
