Babylon’s 2019 Soldier Ride Successful Again Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Councilwoman and event organizer Jackie Gordon and the rest of the Town Board welcomed over 1,400 riders to Town Hall for the 2019 Soldier Ride. The event, a 25-mile bicycle ride that begins at Town Hall in Lindenhurst and ends at Overlook Beach, has raised around over million dollars for the Wounded Warrior Project in 12 years. Other notable elected officials were in attendance, including Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, Suffolk County Sherriff Errol Toulon, several New York State Senators, Assemblypersons and local village officials. Wounded Warrior Project CEO Michael Linnington and former NFL player Tony Richardson were also in attendance and spoke at the morning ceremony.
“It is crucial for us to provide support for the brave men and women who risk their lives overseas and make serious sacrifices,” said Councilwoman Gordon surrounded by the other elected officials and representatives on the front steps of Babylon Town Hall. “This event is a great example of our community coming together to support these heroes. Thank you to everyone at the Wounded Warrior Project for their hard work to make this event happen each year and be such a success,” she added. Over 50 Wounded Warriors led the pack of bicyclists out of Town Hall after a flyover by a Suffolk County Police Department helicopter. Residents lined the course from Sunrise Highway to the entrance of Overlook Beach, where a barbeque hosted by local emergency response
departments and sponsors welcomed the riders. “This event gets bigger and bigger every year and never fails to impress,” said Supervisor Schaffer before introducing the group of elected officials that were in attendance. “Our country was built on the actions of people like our Lieutenant Colonel Jackie Gordon and the rest of the veterans you see here today,” he added. Frank Agoglia, a World War II veteran who stormed the beaches of Normandy during the D-Day invasion and Deer Park resident, was honored before the start of the ride. Frank served with a Glider Infantry Regiment attached to the 82nd Airborne Division. After serving his country, he served the people of New York as a member of the NYPD from 1947 to 1980 when he retired as a detective.

Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple. In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

contest winner. Established in 2007, the competition invites elementary school students to promote the importance of pool safety by creating a poster that illustrates one or more safety tips. One poster is selected from all of those
submitted to be used as part of a countywide message from the Suffolk County Department of Health Services in its seasonal safety campaign. Entries were submitted by students from throughout Legislator Donnelly’s district and

Rebuilding Together Long Island is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. They are an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. They provide free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with d i s a b i l i t i e s and families with children. Those who receive the free home repairs must have met their financial criteria. Their mission as an organization is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives and they help Long Island’s economicallydisadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence (RTLI does not service the Hamptons). RTLI was founded in 1992 by a small group of volunteers that were eager to help needy homeowners. Today they have one paid employee and 200 volunteers, which are the heart and soul of their organization. Their experienced volunteers perform the vast majority of the work they do and they come from all walks of life. This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-ups and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk. Seeing improvement in the lives of Long Island residents is truly what makes all the hard-work from this organization worth it. With the support of all of their many volunteers and partners, Rebuilding Together Long Island has become a wellregarded organization, recognized for their work with rehabbing houses, the building and installation of ramps for those in need and their involvement with communities and organizations that span across Long Island. They need your help to keep up the momentum! There are four main ways you can get involved with their organization: 1) Volunteer. They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills, training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or
Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection. 2) Sponsor a Project. RTLI allows corporations to sponsor a project so they can see a positive impact on the life of a senior, veteran, disabled person or a family in need. This is a great team building and community leadership opportunity for your employees. 3) Attend a Meeting. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month at their office located at 208 Route 109, Suite 204 in Farmingdale at 10 am. 4) Donate. Consider making a donation to their organization. Funding is a continuous requirement to support their efforts. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated. The money you donate stays on Long Island to help our Long Island neighbors! A study by the Law Enforcement Survival Institute showed that in a computer simulated shoot/don’t shoot situation, fatigued police officers were more likely to shoot when not
necessary. What To Do Many sleep specialists recommend these four steps: 1. Don’t drink caffeine late in the day. 2. Make sure your bedroom is a quiet, dark and relaxing environment; neither too hot nor too cold. 3. Make sure your bed is comfortable and don’t use it for reading, watching TV or listening to music. 4. Take a bath before bedtime.
