Looking Ahead
For fifth-graders at Deer Park’s John F. Kennedy Intermediate School, the morning for moving up arrived on June 20th, closing one chapter in their schooling and looking ahead to middle school. “The moving up ceremony is always a bittersweet day for both the teaching and administrative staff,” said Principal Susan Bonner. “We look at how far the children have grown academically over the
three years they have been with us and hope we have made an impact on their lives. We send them off to the middle school where they will continue to become well prepared to be productive citizens of our Deer Park community.” The event began with a rendition of the national anthem by Julia Kotliar and Angelique Jean-Pierre, followed by welcoming speeches by Bonner and fifth-grade Student Government President
Julia Holland. Prior to the students’ receiving their moving up certificates, several fifth-graders were presented with awards, and a joyous version of Randy Newman’s “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” was sung by the entire class. Rihanna Sayed, the fifth-grade Student Government Vice President, then delivered farewell remarks, and the students joined their families to celebrate this momentous next step in their educations.

Theresa Constantine is all smiles this summer and for good reason! The proud alum graduated from Deer Park’s Saints Cyril and Methodius School in June with more certificates than a girl can hold. She’s led a rich and fulfilling academic career thus far, getting involved in a wide array of so many of the extracurricular and athletic activities the school has to offer. Theresa has played violin at SSCM for four years and has participated in the NYSSMA Music Festival
rounded experience. With a $1,000 high school grant in her pocket, Theresa is excited to be attending St. John the Baptist High School in the fall, where she will continue to play the violin in SJB’s orchestra and join the school’s Cross Country Team. The young lady was on her feet quite a bit at SSCM’s Awards Ceremony, earning a Parents Association Scholarship, an award for Altar Service and one for Excellence in Music. The highlight of the day came when Theresa was named as the recipient of SSCM’s Cyrillian Award, a unique honor for the student hand-selected by SSCM’s Principal, Sister Susan Snyder, and based on all around academics and service. Theresa’s name will be added to the names of former recipients of the honor, on a commemorative plaque, which hangs in the halls of the school for posterity. We wish Theresa continued success and we look forward to her coming back to visit and sharing future successes!

I am endlessly fascinated by words and the countless ways in which they can be arranged, manipulated, stylized to convey the precise meaning the author intends. And with that, is there ever really complete precision? Once the text is shared with the masses, the words take on a life of their own, open to new interpretations by an endless array of readers. Such is the beauty of the art. Inspiration is everywhere, if you choose to be open to it. It’s been something of a running joke in my family for years that I tend to quietly observe the interactions of those around me, storing away the nuances of particular events for a later date when they will, inevitably, wind up in a column. While I can’t say I am ever consciously taking mental notes, I suppose the comings and goings of others do find their way into my writings from time to time. There is a quote I’ve come across that I believe speaks to the art of writing quite accurately:

FIREMEN SCHOLARSHIP - On July 17th, the Todaro family awarded Probationary Firefighter Nicholas Delbalso the Anthony Todaro Foundation Scholarship at the Deer Park Fire District meeting. Anthony Todaro passed away 10 years ago and his family started the scholarship in Anthony’s name. The scholarship is awarded to members or family members of the Deer Park Fire Department who will or are attending a 4-year college. Nicholas will be attending SUNY Farmingdale this September.
