Two members of Deer Park High School’s varsity girls track team had an outstanding day at the county championships on June 17. Gianna Marquez became Deer Park’s first track and field county champion since 2016 when she won the 2,000-meter steeplechase. She also finished in the top 5 in the county in the 400-meter hurdles and anchored our All-League 4x800 meter team with a time of 2:19, which showed her range as a track athlete. She made a statement this year that she will be coming back her senior year as the athlete to watch. She motivated her teammates so much so that we had an unprecedented showing in almost all events this year. She deserves the recognition. We can’t wait to see what her senior year brings.” Meanwhile, sophomore
Ava Capone finished fourth in the county in the 1,500-meter race with a time of 4:52, setting a personal record and securing her place as Deer Park’s first 1,500-meter All-County athlete since 2010. “Ava and Gianna go hand in hand when it comes to work ethic,” Petti said. “Ava drives Gianna to be her best and vice-versa. Ava is a huge reason for our team’s success this season, more for her tireless effort than just racking up wins and points. She’ll return as a junior next year as one of the top distance runners in Suffolk and the state.”

Free Transportation Through ‘Ride United’ To And From Covid-19 Vaccine Appointments United Way of Long Island recently launched ‘Ride United’ to help local residents access transportation to receive the COVID-19 vaccine through the rideshare service Lyft. The program is part of United Way Worldwide’s Ride United Vaccine Access Campaign, which addresses unmet transportation needs for individuals and families. Long Island residents participating in ‘Ride United’ receive 2 free Lyft rides (up to $25 each way) to and from vaccination appointments located in Nassau or Suffolk Counties. Riders must download the Lyft app on a supported device and have an active Lyft account. “United Way of Long Island is committed to keeping our communities safe and healthy. Ride United removes barriers of transportation inequity, ensuring that any Long Islander seeking to get vaccinated can get to and from their appointment without cost,” said Theresa A. Regnante, President and CEO of United Way of Long Island. Ride United expands upon the organization’s COVID-19 response efforts. Blue Umbrella Experience (BUE) is a local nonprofit organization that offers a variety of interactive and engaging community classes for youth, young adults and individuals through their Above and Beyond Community Class initiative. Their goal is that students will enjoy learning while also connecting with others.
This Fall, BUE will be offering an array of exciting classes, including Web Design, Music Impact, Innerforce-Martial Arts, iMovie, Cultures, Disney, Cooking, Baking, Animals & Nature, Acting, Sound and Song, Spanish, My Own Business, Yoga, Modern Sports, Your Money, History of Volunteer, Dungeons and Dragons, Animal Care, and Writing Fan Fiction, amongst others! Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Huntington Station) would like to thank local residents who came to his office to generously donate pet food, toys and other supplies for pet owners in need, helping to make the 10th Annual Suffolk County Legislative Pet Food Drive a sweeping success. Legislator Donnelly opened his district office in Huntington Station as a drop-off location for the Pet Food Drive to benefit Baxter’s Pet Pantry of Long Island Cares (www. licares.org) from February through May of this year, collecting pet food and supplies for families in
need. LI Cares founded Baxter’s Pet Pantry in 2009 after hearing about families who were unable to afford pet food, veterinary care and/or other services and were sadly faced with no other choice but to put their pets up for adoption. Baxter’s Pet Pantry also provides toys, pet clothes, feeding bowls, cat litter and other pet supplies, all of which were donated through this drive. “Families should never have to decide between feeding themselves and feeding their cherished pets,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I salute everyone at Long Island Cares for all they do,
and was happy to have this opportunity to help them continue to help pet owners. I am so grateful to our generous neighbors for their care and kindness,” said Legislator Donnelly. Legislator Donnelly’s office will continue to accept donations of pet food. While 5 and 10 pound bags of dog and cat food, canned food, kitty litter and new pet toys are most needed, all pet nourishments are welcome including food for hamsters, fish, birds and ferrets. Protect Your Parks: 4 Ways To Keep Facilities Clean Parks have long been popular places to congregate. Facilities vary, but many parks offer various amenities — from walking or biking trails to dog runs to fitness areas. And while thousands of individuals and families visit parks each
year, when the COVID-19 pandemic was declared in early 2020, parks provided an escape for those who were unable to gather at indoor recreational facilities. Even though parks offered safe places to have fun outdoors when other options were limited, the pandemic affected the way the parks were managed due to budget cuts and reduced staff. This, coupled with a surge in visitors that continues today, only underscores the importance of all outdoor enthusiasts doing what they can to keep parks clean. The following are four effective strategies for individuals to keep parks clean. 1. Leave no trace According to National Geographic, Leave No Trace is a set of environmental ethics for interacting with the great outdoors. It follows guidelines for using parks in thoughtful, sustainable ways. In addition to carry in/carry out
policies for belongings and trash, Leave No Trace components involve making an effort not to disturb and plants and animals, hiking in appropriate areas, and using care when camping. More information about the Leave No Trace movement is available at https://lnt.org. 2. Manage pet waste The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that, in the United States, pet dogs produce more than eight billion pounds of feces each year, which equates to three-quarters of a pound per dog every day. Dog waste can contain bacteria and even cryptosporidium, a parasite that infects humans. Even though animal waste is organic, leaving it alone instead of picking it up can lead to environmental issues, including negative effects on local water supplies. It also smells bad and attracts flies and vermin. It’s important
for park visitors to pick up after their companion animals. 3. Reduce waste It can take roughly 450 years for a plastic water bottle to biodegrade. Even if they finally break down, bottles made from polyethylene terephalate (PET) can leave toxins in the soil and threaten fresh water. Use a reusable bottle instead of a single-use alternative when visiting the park. If plastic bottles must be used, be sure to place them in recycling containers around the park. 4. Volunteer Individuals can volunteer to pick up trash at their local parks. Various conservation groups and organizations organize trash pick-up events each year. Increased usage of parks means the potential for more trash and damage. Everyone can do his or her part to keep parks clean and enjoyable.

Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island is offering families of victims and first responders to add loved ones’ names to its 9-11 Memorial as part of the 20th year remembrance of the September 11th Terrorist Attacks on America. The Memorial monument, located within Holy Rood Cemetery in Westbury, was erected in 2003 and currently displays the names of 414 individuals who were victims of the 9-11 terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center and individuals who worked to rescue and recover the victims at Ground Zero in Lower Manhattan.
