n a final sendoff before starting a new school year in September at Deer Park’s Robert Frost Middle School, fifth-graders at the district’s John F. Kennedy Intermediate School celebrated their educational milestone with an outdoor barbecue picnic, replete with food donated by local restaurants, followed by a dance in the school gym. With all the fuss over this new film, “The Secret Life of Pets,” I thought it only appropriate to provide my own account of this socalled hidden existence we all allegedly cultivate when our humans are away. First off, (spoiler alert) I have never taken to the sewers or made my way to Brooklyn looking for adventure. No, my exploration is confined to the four corners of my aquatic kingdom, where I examine every leaf of my plant and inspect each piece of gravel daily; you know, just to see if anything has changed overnight. While my human feeds me twice a day, I must say the time between meals could be a bit closer. What she does for all those hours in between, I’ll never know. I’ve often thought

I would like to tag along, but the pet store told her I might be susceptible to something called “motion sickness” in the car. Since I can’t go along, I do my best to entertain her whenever she enters the room, in the hope that she might linger just a bit longer. I perform my tricks for her, everything from diving for flakes the moment she drops them in the tank to giving little “love pecks” on her finger when she even so much as touches the water. Sometimes it works, and she’ll stay and have her cereal while perched on the counter next to me; but most times, it’s just some nonsense about “running late” and “see you later Buddy.” The only quality time my human and I have is when she’s busy cooking.

Then, I have a front row seat to all the pretty preparation. Honestly, my life is fairly dull and repetitive, not exactly the stuff of fine cinema. Well, except for that one time with Squeegee the Snail – but I digress. Mostly, it’s a lot of laps and fanning my fins to see if they’ve grown back sufficiently (still a work in progress, but coming along nicely). Too bad I couldn’t tag along for the movie. Maybe I’ll catch it on TV when it comes around. Hope my human still has that portable bowl for me to travel in. I do miss sitting on the coffee table watching the ball game… and sitting on the dining room table watching everyone eat… Boy, I do a lot of watching, don’t I? Maybe they should make a movie about that.

EAGLE SCOUT HONORED - Deer Park resident Thomas Sandoval, of Troop 86, was honored at the Deer Park Firehouse, on June 5th, for his attainment of the rank of Eagle Scout. Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer and Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez presented Thomas with a proclamation, stating that the day of June 6th will be known as “Eagle Scout Thomas Sandoval Day” in the Town of Babylon. A beachfront stroll down the Jones Beach Boardwalk will take place on Thursday evening July 21st at 6 p.m., hosted by the Long Island Health Collaborative. There is no event fee, parking fee, or registration. The Sunset Stroll will highlight walking as a simple and easy way to include exercise and healthy habits in a busy lifestyle. Expected guests at the stroll include New York State Health Commissioner Dr. Howard A. Zucker. The Collaborative is focused on helping community members to better manage and prevent chronic diseases. They are hosting the Sunset Stroll to promote walking as an easily achievable exercise. The Collaborative sponsors an interactive online portal called, Are You Ready,

Feet? , which can be used by people of all ages to track physical activity and progress. “There is mounting scientific evidence that walking at any pace improves physical and mental health,” says Janine Logan, director of the Long Island Health Collaborative. “This is the Collaborative’s third walking event, and we plan to keep hosting walks, hikes, and other activities that promote walking. And with our Are You Ready, Feet?™ online portal, we can reward Long Islanders for making these healthy choices and incentivize others to do the same. ” The Are You Ready, Feet?™ portal is an interactive dashboard that lets users track their physical activity via minutes moved, miles traveled, or steps walked.

Users can receive trophies for their accomplishments, watch as their dashboard maps a journey across Long Island, share on social media, and be entered to win health and wellness prizes every time they log activity. Participants at the July Sunset Stroll will be given the opportunity to sign up for Are You Ready, Feet?™ and log the evening’s steps as their first activity. The Collaborative will meet at Jones Beach, at the west end of Field 4 on Thursday July 21st at 6 p.m., rain or shine. Remarks from Dr. Zucker and representatives from both Nassau and Suffolk County departments of health will be followed by a mile and a half stroll down the Jones Beach Boardwalk.

Senator Michael Venditto recently teamed up with the Colette Coyne Melanoma Awareness Campaign (CCMAC) and the Town of Babylon to sponsor a free skin cancer screening program at Tanner Park in Copiague to help protect residents from skin cancer. “Getting screened is critically important to ensure that skin cancer is detected early and treated effectively. With people spending more and more time in the sun enjoying the summer, this program

gave them the opportunity to be safe and get screened. I thank CCMAC and the Town of Babylon for once again partnering with me to offer this important program,” said Senator Venditto. According to CCMAC, one in five people will be diagnosed with some type of skin cancer in their lifetime. Malignant melanoma, a form of skin cancer, is the fastest growing cancer in America, claiming one life every hour. People of all ethnic backgrounds and races

can get skin cancer. One blistering sunburn during childhood or adolescence more than doubles melanoma risk later in life. CCMAC worked with Dr. Steve McClain of McClain Labs, Dr. Scott Flugman of Dermatology Associates of Huntington, Dr. Erin Schoor of NYU Langone Medical Group and the doctors from Stony Brook Hospital Dermatology Department to provide the free screenings to over 150 individuals.

As their bodies heal, adults may be tempted to rev up their workout routines. But it’s important that men and

Exercising After Injury women take a cautious approach to exercising after injury. Speak with your physician before lifting a finger. Whether your injury required surgery or not, it’s important to speak with your physician before performing any activities that were restricted while you were injured. Book an appointment with your doctor so he or she can examine you to confirm you’re ready for physical activity. If your physician clears you, ask for him or her to be as specific as possible, telling you what you can and cannot do at this stage and how you should adjust your routine as your body once again grows acclimated to

physical activity. Modify your routine. It’s unreasonable to expect your body to dive back into vigorous physical activity after an injury. Modify your routine, ideally under the supervision of a physician and/or physical trainer, as your body recovers. This might mean lifting far less weight than you’re accustomed to or lowering the resistance on the treadmill or elliptical machine. Depending on how long you were sidelined, your recovery may be frustrating and you may ﬁnd yourself taking a gradual approach that’s marked by incremental and seemingly minor successes. But a modiﬁed post-injury workout routine

can promote healing, prevent further injury and get you back to working out at full strength that much quicker. Continue physical therapy. If physical therapy was prescribed as a result of your injury, don’t stop going just because your physician has given you the green light to return to physical activity. When your physician clears you for physical activity, ask him or her about physical therapy and if it’s still necessary. Your therapist may provide your doctor with a progress report on your condition, and the doctor can use that report to determine if

you still need therapy. But keep in mind that physical therapy can aid your recovery, even after you return to physical activity. Abandoning therapy too early may lead to you reinjuring yourself, which will only extend the time you spend on the sidelines. Listen to your body. Listen to your body in addition to your physician and/or physical therapist. Your body will likely let you know through an ache or a pain if you need to take things a little easier during your post-injury workouts. No matter how hard you want to get back to your old routine, don’t ignore the signals your body is sending you.

Recognize and Prevent Repetitive Stress Injuries Repetitive stress injuries, or RSIs, can impact muscles, ligaments, tendons and nerves. Though The Mayo Clinic estimates that three million people in the United States are affected by such injuries, some may not fully understand just how they reached a point where they are suffering from an RSI. RSIs are a condition that occurs when too much stress is placed on one part of the body, typically a joint, over and over again, resulting in inﬂammation and potential tissue damage. RSIs typically happen when a person repeats the same movements again and again. It comes as no surprise then

that RSIs are commonly experienced by athletes and ofﬁce workers. The elderly are most affected by RSIs, but these types of injuries are also known to occur in younger adults and children. These injuries tend to develop over time and tend go unnoticed in their early stages. Prevention is the best defense against RSIs. Start by using

proper equipment at all times to help keep the body protected and in neutral positions. Such equipment may include support devices for wrists or knees, and shoes that ﬁt well and provide ample support.

Athletes should make sure their gear is properly sized to their bodies. Using the wrong size tennis racket, for example, may contribute to elbow strain when serving and hitting. Proper nutrition also is key. Consuming the right foods is essential to developing and maintaining strong muscles, which help support joints in the body. Speak with a doctor or nutritionist if you suspect your diet has room for

improvement. RSIs can be troublesome for office workers. Maintaining neutral body positioning is the best defense against pain and injury, according to the pain prevention resource Tifaq.com. Tifaq.com suggests following these procedures in addition to stretching and exercising at the office: • Keep your head level, forward facing and in line with your torso. • Feet should be flat on the floor or on a footrest. • Shoulders can be relaxed and arms hanging normally at

your sides. Your elbows should be at about 90-degree angles. • Support your back with a lumbar support or a small pillow. • Sit vertically or lean back slightly while at your desk. • Keep frequently used items close by so you do not need to stretch. • Position your monitor so it is directly in front of you and at eye level. • Take frequent breaks to stretch or take a walk around the ofﬁce. Examples of RSIs include carpal tunnel syndrome, rotator cuff injuries, tendonitis and trigger ﬁnger.
