Working with Clay Fifth-graders at Deer Park’s John F. Kennedy Intermediate School completed an impressive unit of study in clay this year during classes with art teacher Sara Meyerback. The students created their own designs and developed glazed bowls and plates, which were then fired in JFK’s kiln.
“Working with the fifth-grade classes and watching them create using clay was such a wonderful experience,” said Meyerback. “There has been a history of doing this project with fifth grade in past years, so I wanted to keep up with tradition. Not many elementary schools have a kiln or are able
to use such an advanced and unique medium like clay. I felt so lucky to have this memory as my very first experience teaching my students how to work with clay. I am so proud of my students and their beautiful glazed pottery. Most importantly they had fun.”

Counting Chickens “Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.” ~ John Lennon If there is one thing we have all learned throughout our lives, it is that there are only so many aspects within our control; and even those few are questionable, at best. We can go through each day with a clear picture as to what we would like our life to be, but the reality is that this is the only true reality we know. The rest is mere wistfulness. This is why it is so important to appreciate each and every moment, those people we are fortunate to have in our lives, and to be grateful for the small miracles which surround us always. It’s difficult, to be sure, when you feel overwhelmed by life and whatever obstacles it might throw your way; but it takes such a minimal effort to stop
for a moment and appreciate a sunrise, a sunset, a butterfly, a blossom … anything, really. My column last week touched on the concept of leaving your day - or at least a portion of it - to chance, to not making a point of scheduling every second, to disconnecting from the socalled “obligations” of phone calls and e-mails and text messages, to refrain from mindlessly scrolling through your social media feeds … to simply experience life as it was designed to be, in the flesh, ever present. I received quite a bit of feedback on this topic, with many sheepishly admitting they are guilty of precisely this on a regular basis. Several even went so far as to make a point of saying they wanted to try my experiment, even if just for a few hours. I’m curious to hear how it went, if any followed through.
Did you feel empty without all the chaos and manic energy surrounding you, pushing you forward from one selfimposed task to the next? Or was it somewhat fulfilling, perhaps allowing you a muchneeded breath of fresh air? Sometimes, in literally taking that breath, we can recapture a large piece of ourselves that we tend to lose to the daily grind. It grounds us, reminding us of the important things in life. And what is more important than finding happiness in the mundane, in making the most of our time, in savoring the memories before they have had a chance to fade ... Nothing, so far as I can tell. There is no fault in having aspirations and dreams; just remember that these days we are living presently are the stuff that dreams are made of as well.

Coastal Steward Long Island is a local non-profit that is dedicated to restoring and preserving Long Island’s coastline through education, community action and raising public awareness. They hope to foster a caring connection between Long Island residents and their shoreline to create future generations of coastal stewards. CSLI has led beach cleanups in their local communities for over a decade, which has helped prevent the contamination of our beaches. Thanks to their volunteers and sponsors, they have removed over 200 tons of trash from the shores of Long Island! On Sunday, August 12th, they are hosting their 2nd Underwater Beach Cleanup. This will be held at Centennial Beach in Port Jefferson starting at 9 a.m. If you love our oceans and want to help keep our coastlines clean, bring your friends and family to help clean up the beach. Also, if you are a certified scuba diver, you can bring your equipment and join those who will go below the surface and clean the beach. Lunch will be provided after the clean up, courtesy of Port Diver. If you are interested in attending, please RSVP to

CSLI also runs programs for camps, schools and any other interested groups that include activities such as shellfish hatchery tours, marine life identification, plankton identification under microscopes, use of the interaction presentations at the Marine Stewardship Education Center and touch tank presentations. They are always looking for more volunteers and are currently looking for people to help in the following areas: beach cleanups, planting oysters, data collection, maintaining tanks, releasing into the harbor and office work. requirements, it would be a few years before Anthony recieved their approval to move forward and it was largely due to the help of Paul Giovino, from NY Stairlifts. In February 2017, Anthony received the final approval of the Boy Scouts to hold his fundraiser, a pasta dinner that was held in March at the Knights of Columbus. Unfortunately, John was not feeling well on the night of the dinner and was unable to attend. That was on a Monday. On Thursday of the same week, John turned 26 and was rushed to the hospital. On Sunday, the community lost this wonderful young man. Anthony knew he had to finish his project for John, and so he did, May 2017, only weeks before Anthony turned 18, four years after his initial meeting with the town. The project was always meant for John and so Anthony approached the town once more and asked that his project be a memorial. Before Anthony’s Eagle Ceremony, the Town of Babylon held a ribbon cutting and dedication ceremony. With the Batkiewicz family, friends and politicians surrounding them, David Batkiewicz and Anthony unveiled the sign bearing John’s name. John will always be remembered by those that knew him as the boy with the brightest and biggest smile but now his name will be remembered by the community always.

On June 30th, Anthony D’Arrigo’s Eagle Ceremony was held at Birchwood Park, the site of his Eagle project, a 20’ platform and handicap ramp so that people with disabilities can view the games with an unobstructed vantage point. the year,” said teacher Marianna Grieco. “Our goal is to foster positive learning experiences in order for the students to develop a love of math.”
Deer Park Wins Big
All of Deer Park High School’s performing groups took first place in their respective categories at this year’s Music in the Parks festival competitions
held in June at Hersheypark in Pennsylvania, and the school’s wind ensemble received the Best Overall Concert Band award. The chamber orchestra,
guitar ensemble and wind ensemble all earned ratings of Superior, and the women’s choir earned a rating of Excellent.
