Marquez and thanked her for the way she represented Deer Park as a community. In the 2021-2022 season, she placed first in the county and state qualifier meets, was Division 1 public school and Long Island Elite Meet
champion, finished third overall in the federation and fifth overall in the state, and broke the school record in the 400-meter hurdles. Marquez will be continuing her running career at North Carolina Central University this fall.

Deer Park Graduates Are Falcons Forever Deer Park High School graduates were encouraged to draw upon the lessons learned and the friendships made as a source of inspiration for the future at the graduation ceremony for the Class of 2022 on June 23. In their crowning moment as Falcons, the 303 graduates walked onto the field in the maroon caps and gowns to cheers and applause from their proud families. After remarks from senior class advisers Sara DiCandia and Marissa Caruso, who reminded them to never forget where they came from, senior members of the chorus sang the Alma Mater. Senior class President Yoki Lin recalled how much they have achieved since their first day of high school on Sept. 5, 2018. There were also some unexpected moments. “We’ve come across every challenge that life can throw at us and these hardships have only made
us stronger,” she said. Salutatorian Saima Hoque centered her speech around the quote, “Do I dare disturb the universe?” She encouraged her fellow graduates to indeed disturb the universe in their pursuit of their goals and dreams. Valedictorian Nicholas Stamatakis spoke about the “mini role models” throughout his time in high school – teachers and friends who have imparted some kind of knowledge on him. He told everyone, as they move on from high school, to find people who have traits they want to emulate. For the seniors, the path to graduation felt like a long journey but for their parents, the time flew by, noted Superintendent James Cummings. They’re both right, he said. To give a little perspective, he noted some changes that have taken place in the lifetime of the graduates. They were born around the time Michael Jordan
retired from basketball and people could still rent movies from Blockbuster. The iPhone came out when they were 4 and popular social media site TikTok debuted when they were in middle school. Controlling Costs For Consumers, Despite Record Setting Inflation Rates. Inflation rates are higher now than they have been in decades, and costs are impacting consumers and companies around the United States. Program Supporting MWBEs With Training And Resources Sets Example For The State
In the two years since the Babylon Industrial Development Agency (IDA) launched its Economic Inclusion Initiative during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the effort has grown into a model of success for others to follow. The program, which is aimed at supporting and elevating Minority, Women and Veteran Business Enterprise entrepreneurs within the Town of Babylon, has helped dozens of dedicated entrepreneurs connect to financial, technical and legal assistance, with many starting new businesses or getting MWBE certified in the process. “The purpose of this effort was to focus on entrepreneurs within the Town that were primed for success but didn’t have all the tools or resources to do so,” said Tom Dolan, CEO of the Babylon IDA. “Helping to fill these common gaps, which are hurdles to success, was our main objective and with the results we have seen from this program’s infancy tell us we are onto something revolutionary. It is our hope that with some additional funding, we can
expand this program locally while regions throughout the state can launch similar programs so we can really make some progress on this front statewide.” Since its launch in the fall of 2020, the initiative has guided the development of nearly 30 aspiring or existing business owners who were looking for direction amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. From a financial perspective, the program has helped business owners secure nointerest loans while also improving access to capital by creating supporting crowdfunding and micro-lending. Technical assistance has also been provided to address sales and profit deficiencies, closure rates and other barriers to business growth while overseeing partnerships with foundations and universities to provide capacity building. Additionally, the initiative has helped many business owners acquire MWBE certification by providing assistance in acquiring necessary certification and bonding while also promoting partnerships between Town and minority consultants, contractors,

There are two more businesses going through the process to take advantage of the successful pilot program. “The Economic Inclusion Initiative is a crucial initiative to bridge the gap between an entrepreneur’s vision, implementation and sustained success,” said
NAACP LI Regional Director Tracey Edwards. “The program aims to remove all obstacles, close the revenue gap, and create more paths of entrepreneurship through innovation and partnership. What the Babylon IDA has launched is an effective model of a community-driven strategy that should be used across New York State.” Contributing greatly to this development has been an ongoing series of educational events and training resources for business owners. This fall, the initiative will host a bootcamp series focusing on business development and social media marketing. There are also numerous B2B Minority, Women and Veteran networking event series being planned to help entrepreneurs make the business connections that can support and elevate their businesses. The Babylon IDA is hopeful and encouraged that two other IDA’s in the state have reached out to learn more about replicating this program in their region. “If we can make this program a statewide staple, its potential for not only helping improve the economy, but the lives of so many new and existing business owners is limitless,” said Matt McDonough, Special Counsel to the Babylon IDA. “We encourage our counterparts in IDAs throughout the state as well as the state legislature to make this issue a priority. you the music of Rodgers and Hammerstein, George Gershwin, Leroy Anderson, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Duke Ellington, and others. Local favorites, vocalists Jack and Ann Cassin, will also join the orchestra. He became close friends with the Father of Bluegrass music, Bill Monroe, and got to learn from and eventually perform with him. In September of 2015 Buddy was honored to receive the “Long Island Sound Award” from the LI Music Hall of Fame “For Outstanding Contributions to Long Island’s Musical Heritage.” He has brought Back Roads down to the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville to perform a few times, and they’ve also performed at the grand opening of the Bluegrass Museum and Hall of Fame in Owensboro, KY and Country Music’s Fan Fair in Nashville, TN. The group has played at most of the Bluegrass Festivals in the northeastern U.S., including Grey Fox and Podunk, and at several Long Island venues, such as Hecksher Park in Huntington, Bald Hill Cultural Center, Agawam Park in Southampton, and has headlined concerts
for LITMA (the Long Island Traditional Music Association), the Huntington Folk Music Society and the Museums at Stony Brook Folk & Fiddle Festival. Buddy Merriam’s involvement in the Long Island Bluegrass & Roots Music Festival dates back to its beginnings. He has graced the stage at Tanner Park many times throughout the festival’s 20 years, and is a crowd favorite whenever he plays.
