I have always been a fan of the above quote, feeling its sentiment to be one we would all do better to embrace from time to time. One day. How difficult can it be to truly remove oneself from our surroundings and instead become immersed in the peace and tranquility of utter respite for one continuous 24-hour period? Turns out, much more so than anticipated.
I have never been one to take vacation days too liberally, so when I decided to make it my mission to piece together a five-day “weekend” leading up to the 4th of July, it was with a feeling of entering unchartered territory. How to fill these five days from morning ’til night, to schedule hour after hour of fun. Schedule fun, you say? Perhaps that was where I went wrong. It’s funny, I generally fluctuate between moving manically from one task to another, barely coming up for air, to spending an entire day doing what can only be adequately described as vegetating. There is rarely an in-between mode. Given five days to play with, I spent the better part of two going full speed ahead, and the others, well - recovering from said adventures. Come time to return to work, and I was just about ready for another minibreak.
I often look at others’ vacation photos and admire how they seem to never come up for air, to always be fitting in one more cultural outing, a dinner with friends, a tourism stop in some city or another. Relaxation? That’s a foreign word for another day; certainly no time for that during the course of limited “free” time we each hold onto like a precious commodity. Irony noted, of course. Try it yourself. Take one day, and attempt to leave it open, free of any scheduled tasks but the ones you choose to engage in on a whim. Remove yourself completely - no phone, no e-mail, no contact. Start with an hour. See how it feels. Build from there. Who knows, you might just reach the end of the day feeling completely refreshed and reinvigorated. Or bored out of your mind. No harm in finding out either way.

It was a grand farewell to Falcons leaving the nest as Deer Park High School’s Class of 2018 celebrated the school’s 55th commencement on June 22nd. Keeping with tradition, the Roisin Dubh Pipe Band led the graduating seniors into the stadium. Providing the remainder of the music were the school’s symphonic and ninthgrade bands, directed by Jerry Cannarozzo. Following a welcoming speech from Senior Class President Alan Korsiak, salutatorian Megan Zhang, a gifted flutist, used the silent moments of musicianship as metaphor to reflect on the moment the seniors found themselves in. “Beyond the horizon, the world is waiting,” she told her classmates. Noting that her fellow seniors may not have known her well because she was often buried in her

Marking a Transition Deer Park’s John F. Kennedy Intermediate School marked the transition to middle school with a memorable moving up ceremony on June 21st, giving the school’s outgoing fifth-grade students a chance to share their memories as well as their excitement for the future.
Jessica Jones sang the National Anthem to begin the ceremony. The students heard from Principal Susan Bonner and fifth-grade Student Government President Erika Sy, as well as Robert Frost Middle School Associate Principal Philip Paniccia, who welcomed the students to sixth
grade. Awards and certificates were presented, and the fifthgraders happily sang along to a “Moving Up Medley” mixed by Aba Farghaly. Fifth-grade Student Government Vice President Aiden Arifi gave a happy closing address, telling his classmates, “Have a great summer!”

With coastal breezes, tons of sunshine and world-class beaches, Long Island is a wonderful place for beach-lovers to reside. However, we must remember to take care of our shoreline and preserve the natural beauty that surrounds us. Throughout the month, I will present various ways that you can help those at Coastal Steward Long Island to preserve, educate and take action! Coastal Steward Long Island is a local non-profit that is dedicated to restoring and preserving Long Island’s coastline through education, community action and raising public awareness. They hope to foster a caring connection between Long Island residents and their shoreline to create future generations of coastal stewards. CSLI has led beach cleanups in their local communities for over a decade, which has helped prevent the contamination of our beaches. Thanks to their volunteers and sponsors, they have removed over 200 tons of trash from the shores of Long Island! They have also been restoring shellfish since 2000. More than 500,000 adult shellfish have been released into Port
Jefferson and Mt. Sinai Harbors to date. They wish to establish a self-sustaining population of oysters in our harbors. As a non-profit that operates 100% by volunteers, Coastal Steward Long Island is always taking volunteers. If you would like to help keep our island home to some of the most beautiful and top-rated beaches in America, then consider volunteering with CSLI! They are looking for volunteers to help with beach cleanups, to plant oysters, to collect relevant data, to maintain tanks, to release into the harbor and to perform office work. On Saturday, July 14th, CSLI will be having a Shellfish Restoration Project at Cedar Beach in Mt. Sinai; and on Saturday, July 21st, they will be having a Beach Cleanup at Belle Terre in Port Jefferson. If you would like to attend, please e-mail Info@CoastalSteward.org for more information. Beginning a memorable new tradition, Deer Park High School seniors traveled to their respective primary school buildings for a senior walk on June 18th. The graduates paraded through John Quincy Adams and May Moore Primary Schools as the younger students lined the hallways, followed by a question-and-answer period where outgoing second-graders had the chance to talk to and gain inspiration from the seniors. “These seniors spent 13 years in school, and they put a lot of hard work in and had a lot of fun,” said JQA Principal Christopher Molinelli. “We are really proud of them.”

June 20th was a night of welcomes and farewells, and of awards and certificates, for eightgraders at Deer Park’s Robert Frost Middle School. Kicking off the
moving up ceremony, National Junior Honor Society President Michelle Xuan led the pledge, while Student Council President Sofia Arrascue addressed her classmates, saying,
“We now have to think of our future, and try to get as close to our dreams as possible.” “This evening is an important commemoration of the
past three years of your children’s educational and emotional journey,” Principal Eliana Levey told the proud assembled parents. “The middle
school years can potentially be the most challenging school years for many students. At fifth-grade orientation three years, I told you that middle school
was like a rollercoaster, with many ups and downs, but I promised you that we would end on a high note, and here we are today.”
