The graduation paid tribute to the school’s legacy and looked toward the future of graduates. Congratulations to all the students on their great accomplishments!

The United States Power Squadrons District 3 will hold Rendezvous East, their premier summer event in Greenport July 26th through 28th. The last five rendezvous in Greenport were so successful; the squadrons are back again. With Greenport’s long maritime heritage dating back to the 1600’s, what a great place for a gathering of Long Island boaters. While each local squadron schedules their own events, Rendezvous East brings together boaters from all District 3 squadrons across Long Island for the summer’s biggest boating celebration. District Commander Barry Rush, SN will welcome boats to Mitchell Marina and possibly into several other local marinas. Many other squadron members will be arriving by land. Judged Art show Winners BACCA hosted its 24th Annual Judged Art Show reception on Friday night June 7th at Old Town Hall in Babylon Village despite torrential rains that blanketed the region. On hand were Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Councilman Thomas Donnelly and BACCA President Shawn Cullinane to present awards to deserving artists. This year’s show included works of artists from Port Washington to Patchogue and doubled the entries from the previous year. The Art Show judge was Mario Tucci, a muralist that

A Day of Independence

July 4th has historically been a day of extreme patriotism. This pride in our nation is brought about by the realization that we are actually free. We live in such a great place that emphasizes our ability to choose! The right to make ourselves happy is undoubtably taken for granted, but on the Fourth of July, we display our thanks. This year, on the fourth, my cousins and I realized OUR freedom. On this Independence Day, we did what made us happy, not our parents. We were truly free. We were able to break away from the monotonous family functions and enjoy the sand, the sea and the sun. Our small group traded in the traditional family barbecue for a “doublecheeseburger pizza”, in

what we consider to be a budding tradition. The seven of us got ice cream afterwards as well. The day wouldn’t have been complete without every single one of us getting ridiculously sunburnt and buying all of the aloe on Fire Island. 237 years ago, our founding fathers wanted to create a place where people could do what they wanted in an effort to make themselves happy. All of America’s troops and fallen heroes gave their lives for the hope that we could forever have our rights. They wanted to enable people to create an environment where people could enjoy their freedom. We did just that! A day filled with beach volleyball and family gave way to a night of fireworks and fun. We enjoyed the company of

each other, and didn’t go to sleep until the morning of July 5th! After months of structured schooling, the slack to do whatever we wanted was welcomed and greatly appreciated. On the fourth, we weren’t forced to study or to work; we were free to do whatever we desired. On that day, we were able to enjoy life to its fullest. We were able to relax, take in the sun and enjoy the company of family. None of these opportunities would have been possible without the sacrifice of our soldiers and the flying of our colors. Enjoy your country, it is the greatest in the world because of the freedom available to us. Isn’t that what the Fourth of July is all about?

Cloudy With A Chance of Rain By: Jamie Lynn Ryan This seems to have been the weather forecast for the last, I don’t know, two or three weeks or so, give or take a day when it was obviously, undeniably… raining. What to do with this kind of uncertainty? Cancel all plans and batten down the hatches “just in case,” right? Um… no. I shake my head when I see people frantically rearranging their schedules to accommodate the weather – that great, unpredictable force of Mother Nature that we are all beholden to. Why? Chances are, the

so-called experts will be slightly off, or, better yet, completely wrong. Best to cover all bases by predicting a little of everything, no? No. How about some good old-fashioned meteorology to back up these forecasts – and future-casts? Or better yet, how about we focus on getting the one-day right before expanding into the next 7-10 days? Life is unpredictable enough as it is. The last thing we need is others’ farflung foresight thrown into the mix to ensure that no plans are ever made, nothing is ever done and we all just sit around and “play it safe.”

Put it this way, you could do nothing, go nowhere, see no one, experience zilch ... and your own four walls and ceiling could come crashing down around you. So better to get out and see the world, no? I think so. Which is why, sometimes to my detriment, I refuse to put any plans on hold until I look out my window and decide for myself. There are far too many, more important things to worry about. A storm cloud hovering overhead is the least of them. Besides, after the storm, you just may see a rainbow.

Valedictorian Tyler Doogan, who has been accepted into the University of Buffalo’s Honors Program, directed his peers to face the future head-on. He explained that while the future is unknown, it is filled with limitless possibilities, and while there are no certainties or guarantees, one should follow his head and heart. In Deer Park tradition, the valedictorian from 10 years prior served as the honorary guest commencement speaker. This year, Class of 2003 covaledictorian Dr. Thomas DePrima spoke to students directly and identified the commencement as “a day about you, and a celebration of you.” He reminded students that they are entering a new phase of their lives that holds more freedoms to make decisions, and that while these decisions may have lifelong impacts, they can always be edited. With so much at stake, he instructed students to employ a healthy skepticism, conduct their own research and carefully consider the advice they receive. Principal James Cummings highlighted the class’s achievements in the areas of academics, arts and athletics and drew upon the class’s yearbook theme, “lucky.” He reminded students that luck was only a small part of their success, and that it was their hard work and dedication to

To commemorate Deer Park High School’s 50th commencement ceremony, the Class of 2013 donned the district’s original robe colors of maroon and white, while the American Celtic Pipe Band led students in procession to the school’s front lawn. The graduation paid tribute to the school’s legacy and looked toward the future of graduates. Superintendent of Schools Eva J. Demyen shared a personal story about Superstorm Sandy to draw correlations between the growth of students and their ability to overcome challenges throughout the years. She encouraged students to find their way through life, make smart decisions and, most importantly, enjoy the journey. Since their freshman year, senior class advisers Jessica Adamo and Kristen Small have formed strong relationships with students. The pair addressed the graduates, thanking the group for the unique memories and special events shared, including fundraisers, dances and group achievements. Elected by her peers, Senior Class President Nicolette Tortorici emphasized the feeling of community and reinforced that the class will leave the high school knowing who they are and that they have all had an impact on one another. Salutatorian Jordan Rios, who will be attending Cornell University in the fall, reflected on what the students had survived and what they will leave behind as a class. Two groups of Deer Park second-grade students at May Moore and John Quincy Adams elementary schools celebrated their moving-up ceremonies surrounded by the educational community. At May Moore, Principal Alicia Konecny introduced the class and described the group as exceptional students. Second-grade students reminisced through an “A-Z of memories,” pumped their fists to “Education Rocks!” and waved American flags during the song “Wavin’ Flag.” At the ceremony’s conclusion, the administrators offered a “flash-forward” by dismissing the Deer Park High School Class of 2023, and students danced to “Gangnam Style” as they filed out.

JQA Elementary, “Where Falcons Learn to Fly,” had a balloon-themed ceremony that played off the whimsical journey of these festive favors. During their “Up, Up and Away to JFK” moving-up, students performed “Well, It’s Been Fun” and “Ready to Go!” To conclude the school year, JQA’s second-grade class gave back to the district and environment by planting a Japanese lilac tree. The tree, which was donated by the district’s buildings and grounds crew, was presented by Principal Jennifer Rodriguez, who read facts about it and explained that it represents the second-graders as a class and symbolizes their time spent at JQA. Students from each class had a

hand in the planting by shoveling dirt into the hole. Once planted, each student touched the tree for good luck as they move up to John F. Kennedy Intermediate School. Selected students at both schools were presented with the New York State Comptroller’s Achievement Award as well as awards for perfect attendance. JFK Associate Principal Shaun McLeod spoke to the classes and thanked the teachers and parents for preparing the children for their promotion to JFK. Mr. McLeod described how impressed he was by the students’ maturity, intelligence and good behavior, and instructed them to reach high and dream big as the future of the world.

Suffolk County Legislator Lou D’Amaro recently shared a short stack to support a great cause as he joined the Southeast Concerned Civic Association (SECCA) at their annual Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser, held on Saturday, June 22nd at the George Washington School in Deer Park.

Invited by SECCA President Dr. Tyrone Bennett, Legislator D’Amaro met with several community members at the event which also featured music, entertainment and a car wash. All proceeds from the fundraiser will support SECCA programs. “I want to thank Dr. Tyrone Bennett and all

of the SECCA members who attended this great event,” said Legislator D’Amaro. “The pride in the community is evident. I look forward to keeping the lines of communication open with this active civic association as we work together to address issues of local interest.”

PRE-K STUDENTS SHINE - The youngest of Deer Park’s graduates showcased their talents and lessons learned at the Abraham Lincoln Pre-Kindergarten End-ofYear Celebration. Led by Principal Dr. Christine Criscione, each class took to the stage to perform in front of their peers and families. In front of a live audience, students sang both original and classic lyrics that highlighted their achievements and events shared together. Choreographed dances told class stories and illustrated the vibrant personalities of the students.

Pastor Dixon-Clark was born in North Carolina; educated in the Greensboro Public Schools; graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in Political Science and received a Masters Degree in Theology from Northeastern Theological Seminary of Jacksonville, Florida. He was ordained in December of 1988 and held several pastorships before becoming Pastor of the First Baptist Church in Bay Shore on March 27th 2012.
